PB hotel design editorial

Carved from a seventeenth-century palazzo on Merchants Street in the heart of UNESCO-listed Valletta, Rosselli AX Privilege opened in 2019 as Malta's first true design hotel, its honey-coloured globigerina limestone facade — complete with traditional gallariji enclosed balconies and black-painted shutters — virtually unchanged from the building's Baroque origins. The conversion was handled by local architectural practice Chris Briffa Architects, who threaded contemporary interventions through the historic shell with considerable restraint, preserving the vaulted stone ceilings and thick masonry walls that give the ground-floor restaurant, Margo's, its particular drama: raw limestone arches overhead, dark panelled walls with arched recesses, amber velvet chairs pulled up to black granite tables, and an irregular stone-fragment floor that references Malta's ancient terrazzo tradition. The 22 rooms sit across four floors and diverge sharply in atmosphere — some dressed in deep cobalt velvets with terrazzo floors in fine grey aggregate, others in a lighter register with Carrara marble wall slabs, walnut joinery framing backlit arched doorways, and oversized circular ceiling pendants in brushed brass. Blue velvet bolster cushions thread through both registers as a consistent accent. Up on the roof, the ION Harbour restaurant terrace frames the Grand Harbour and the domed Carmelite church with copper-painted arch structures that echo Valletta's own skyline geometry, the timber deck set for dinner as dusk draws the Mediterranean light down to a thin amber line on the water.

Rosselli - AX Privilege Reviews

"We chose the Rosselli for its central location within a few minutes on foot to the most important sites in Valletta. The staff was very attentive and accommodating. Mohammad the concierge greeted us on arrival and made restaurant suggestions as well as arranging private tours. He is exceptional as well as other staff members who made our four night stay very enjoyable. Our Junior suite was comfortable and quiet despite the busy location. We did find it odd that there were no large mirrors for dressing in our and also limited electrical outlets, an annoyance for a hotel which otherwise executes so well in every other regard. The restaurants on premises are excellent and I highly recommend breakfast at Street Grain. Overall this is an excellent hotel and reasonably priced for the level of service that it delivers."

"We had a wonderful experience at the AX St. John Hotel. Mr. Mohammad Tarik was exceptionally kind, he provided us with a map and helpful recommendations on what to visit in Malta, helped us with our luggage, and even offered to assist us if we had trouble finding a restaurant. He was always friendly and smiling. The reception staff were also very kind and welcoming. We would gladly visit again!"

"Hotel is very good overall. The location is excellent, being locally centrally within Valletta. The room was very clean and was quite unique, especially its architecture, as a result of the building's age. The service was also very good. Mohammad, the concierge, was also very helpful and willing to give recommendations, which was greatly appreciated as a solo traveler. Definitely a good option when traveling to Valletta."
