PB hotel design editorial

Positioned just outside Valletta's City Gate, where the bastions of a sixteenth-century fortified capital meet the open sprawl of modern Malta, The Phoenicia Malta was conceived in the 1930s and completed in 1947 to a design by Trouton and Sie — a building whose gloden Maltese limestone facade and stepped Baroque-inflected silhouette make it almost indistinguishable from the ancient fortifications visible in the surrounding gardens. The hotel's 136 rooms spread across six floors, and the property carries the unhurried authority of a building that has always understood its position: within the walls but commanding them, looking across the Grand Harbour toward Msida and Sliema without apology. A major restoration returned the interiors to confident form, layering two distinct registers across the guest rooms — one running to cobalt blue lacquered desks, chevron-patterned dhurrie rugs, and blue upholstered headboards against white plaster walls; another deploying sage-green arched headboards with olive-base frames and Verner Panton-adjacent globe pendants against textured cream wallcovering. The dining room is the building's most eloquent interior space: deeply coffered white plasterwork, arched fanlight windows glazed with geometric tracery, blue leather banquettes anchored beneath Delft-blue damask wall panels, and dark walnut parquet floors. On the pool terrace, mature olive trees planted among limestone-paved sundecks frame an infinity edge that dissolves into the harbour below — the geometry of the bastions still present in the cut-stone sentry box standing at the terrace's edge.

"It is without doubt a luxury hotel. Excellent location. The friendliest staff who accommodate your every need. Our room was beautiful and we were able to sit on the balcony overlooking the harbour. The products in the bathroom were very high end and added to the luxury feel. A variety of places to eat and drink within the hotel and provide delicious menus. Cannot recommend highly enough. The staff were amazing 🤩"

"Excellent hotel, from position on edge of town to facilities, staff, service, food etc. Had a wonderful weeks stay here with friends and very impressed, the manageress Robyn is on hand most of the time, friendly and attentive and the abilities of her staff and service show she really knows her job. Everyone friendly attentive and go the extra mile to make sure you enjoy your stay. Bar, lounge and restaurant all fabulous although personally I would ditch the serving of the lamb with grapefruit for me an unexpected and nasty shock! Saying that breakfasts superb and the chefs added touch of bringing round pastries wonderful, lunch by the pool not only magical but outstanding and dinner excellent too. The gardens and pool area well managed and excellent and one of the few hotels I’ve stayed at to be able to host wedding parties without inconveniencing other guests, outstanding! Room spacious and exceptionally comfortable with attention to detail and room attendance perfect. Slight accident during our stay and everything was dealt with efficiently and so well thank you to all but in particular Francis. Definitely one to try and we will return fabulous thank you!"

"Spoiler alert: The 5 days were wonderful 😊 The basics. The Phoenicia is wonderfully positioned. Along a tree lined avenue full of birdsong and life it is a perfect spot to explore Valetta on foot, it’s a perfect spot for taxis for further afield and even a perfect spot for buses for the entirety of Malta. The Hotel It’s beautiful, luxury without being gaudy, its tasteful without being stuffy, it’s relaxing and elegant, the service from porters to housekeeping, from reception to kitchen and all in between, friendly, experienced and efficient. That sounds glib but seriously they are excellent Notable aspects Breakfast: Easily one of the top three we have experienced anywhere in the world, if not the top. A huge and high-quality choice, fresh food, and a relaxed service. Club Bar: Just…. elegant and was perfect before dinner Restaurant: the food was very good, I wanted something from the club bar menu, and no issue in getting that. To be fair I wouldn’t expect one but there was no hint of a problem. Relaxed and easy. The quality of the food was very good. They have a specialised Beef Bar but the steaks I had here were excellent. The Gardens: This is the jewel in the crown for both my wife and I. After a bust day in Valetta to stroll here in the large, well-tended gardens as a haven for both guests and wildlife it was magical. It was calm spot with wonderful views The Bastion Pool: We didn’t spend enough time here,(just other things to do) but what we did was lovely (too weak a word),but the views of the Manoel Island and Marina framed by the walls and bastions (unsurprisingly) were superb and with attentive but unintrusive staff ….. excellent. Our room: Very comfortable bed, comfortable room, not massive but easily big enough. We had a veranda with a view of the Grand Harbour. Housekeeping, efficient and thoughtful. The bathroom has a combined bath and shower, but it was a good one. Oh ....and the room was quiet ! Malta was wonderful. The Phoenicia made it into one of our top three memorable holidays. If we don’t go back to this hotel at some stage, I’ll be very disappointed."

"What a gem in the Med ! Our stay at the Phoenicia was first class from the moment we arrived to the moment we left. The service level from everyone at this hotel is brilliant - Whoever is responsible for training is doing a brilliant job across the hotel. We used a number of the restaurants for breakfast & lunch and one for dinner, the food was lovely. We explored the local restaurants which were great but for the last night we dined in the hotel and all agreed it was the best dinner we had over the stay. The rooms are very nice with all the amenities you could ever need, remember this is a city hotel so the rooms are not the biggest ! We used the concierge and would like to call out Jonathan for his outstanding help and service. This was our first trip to Malta - We will be back and we will stay at the lovely Phoenicia."
