PB hotel design editorial

Mauritius's east coast has been reshaping the definition of Indian Ocean resort design since Le Saint Géran first opened in 1975, establishing the template that dozens of subsequent properties across the Maldives and Seychelles would imitate without quite matching. One&Only Le Saint Géran sits on its own private peninsula at Pointe de Flacq, a geographic privilege that gives the property two distinct shorelines — calm lagoon water on one side, open ocean on the other — and that shapes every design decision made across its 163 suites and villas. The low-rise white-rendered pavilions, their generous covered terraces framed by warm timber detailing, are arranged to dissolve the boundary between groomed lawn and powdery beach, a sequence visible in the images where thatched beach parasols punctuate a palm-lined foreshore that fades directly into the turquoise of the lagoon. Interiors after the One&Only rebranding carry a calm coastal register: tray ceilings with brushed-bronze pendant lights, deep indigo and slate blue patterned rugs over pale limestone floors, upholstered headboards in muted grey-green panels, and open-fronted oak bar cabinets that give standard rooms a quietly residential feeling. Against these composed spaces, the beachside restaurant asserts a dramatically different mood — a high thatched roof structure of lashed bamboo and rope-wrapped columns, suspended woven fish forms turning the ceiling into an artisan installation, the whole dining room open to the lagoon at sunset. The contrast between the two registers, restrained and theatrical, is what keeps the property from feeling like a single idea stretched too thin.

"5 stars, as always, we will return"

"We stayed at The Only & Only Le Saint Géran for our honeymoon recently, having spent a lot of time researching online to find somewhere truly special. You always hope when travelling somewhere new that the photos and reviews will be a true reflection of the experience; we were already excited, but our own stay far exceeded our expectations. From the second we checked in, every worry was left at the door and it felt like we’d stepped into another world for a couple of weeks. We’ve stayed in some very nice places over the years, but the service here really is second to none. So many thoughtful touches throughout our entire stay – our room was decorated on arrival, with complimentary bubbles to kick off our celebrations, a bath run with petals and candles one night, and local turn down service gifts each night. We were assigned three dedicated hosts who were contactable via Whatsapp 8am – 11pm during our stay. Joyce, Rahul and Kumar really couldn’t have done anything more for us, to the point that we joked that if we’d asked them to get us a lottery ticket, they’d have brought us the winning one! This level of service extended to every single member of staff that we encountered during our stay – the warmth and interest in our day felt genuine, names were learnt and remembered, and the team helped us to plan a few great excursions whilst in Mauritius to properly experience island life. You’ll struggle to get bored even if never leaving the resort – multiple private beach spaces (no fighting for a sunbed or surrounded by loads of people!), watersports, an excellent spa where we enjoyed a full body massage, padel and tennis courts, a fully equipped gym... There’s also Riva, the beach club, which you can request a 5 min buggy across to at any point if fancying a change of scenery. The food – where to begin?! One of us has a number of dietary requirements, which can make travel difficult, but here we didn’t worry once. On arrival, we were introduced to one of the sous chefs who explained all of the different options available, how food was prepared, and let us know that we could request anything on the menu to be prepared separately if so desired. All allergens were clearly displayed, and there was so much choice. ‘Buffet’ does not do it justice – everything was cooked fresh in front of us, and we didn’t have the same thing twice. The waiters all took it upon themselves to ensure we weren’t accidentally eating anything that we couldn’t – so thoughtful and attentive. We had a few wonderful à la carte meals at Tapasake (Japanese inspired), Prime (steakhouse) and Riva (Italian inspired beachclub) – again, lots of options and the team were happy to chat through on any questions. We truly couldn’t have wished for somewhere better to celebrate our honeymoon, and couldn’t recommend One & Only more highly. We can’t wait to return, and certainly can’t imagine staying anywhere else!"

"Simply amazing - staff were always friendly and polite, always willing to help and all spoke multiple languages so proved invaluable. Room was exactly as you see in pictures - cleaning staff did a fantastic job every single day. The management team in all the restaurants were also very attentive and always present to make sure you always had a great experience (thank you to the lovely Brit in Tapa Sake who also gave us great advice on the best place to go shopping). The location is about 1 hour from the main airport but the resort is right on the beach so perfectly placed if you just want to get away. If I had to pick a fault, it would be the pillows - although very big and clearly not cheap, they were not very comfortable."

"My family and I had the most amazing experience at Le Saint Geran. Not only were the amenities wonderful, including luxurious beach-front suites, masterful massages, divine cuisine, and beautiful pools; but also the hospitality demonstrated by the staff was out of this world. Baasil was the primary employee assigned to our family to assist with our needs. Baasil never hesitated to make our stay the best possible. He is exceptionally kind, diligent, hard-working and knowledgeable. I would bring Baasil home with me if I could!"

"One&Only Le Saint Géran is in a category of its own, and it comes down to one thing: the people. The property is breathtaking. Pristine beach, immaculate grounds, world-class dining. But what made this trip truly unforgettable was our lead concierge, Baasil. In all my travels, I have never experienced that level of attentiveness and genuine warmth from a single person. Every question answered immediately. Every request completed without delay. He anticipated what we needed before we even asked, and he did it all with a calm, gracious professionalism that made every interaction feel personal and not transactional. Baasil and staff alone are reason enough to come back. If you’re on the fence about booking, don’t be. This resort delivers on every promise a luxury property makes, and then some. Ask for Baasil when you arrive. You’ll understand exactly what I mean. One&Only Le Saint Géran gets 5 stars. Baasil gets 6."
