PB hotel design editorial

Strung across a series of connected peninsulas and a private island on Mauritius's east coast, where the lagoon at Trou d'Eau Douce shelters one of the island's most protected stretches of turquoise water, Shangri-La Le Touessrok has always drawn its identity more from geography than from architectural bravado. The resort's low-rise pavilions — thatched roofs stepping down through dense casuarina and palm canopy to the sand — defer to the landscape rather than commanding it, the aerial view revealing just how thoroughly the built fabric dissolves into the green. A substantial renovation completed in 2016 refreshed the 200-room property, with interiors moving toward a cleaner, more contemporary palette while retaining the warm timber framing and basalt stonework that connect the architecture to local Mauritian material culture. The guest rooms present two distinct registers across the property: older garden-facing categories grounded in dark timber beds, coral-motif headboards, and terracotta floor tiles, while the refurbished overwater and beachfront suites adopt a lighter language — bleached wood screens, jute rugs, curved upholstered seating in warm ivory, and amber velvet cushions that echo the lagoon light at dusk. In the main restaurant, a double-height vaulted ceiling with white-painted exposed ribs creates an airy structural canopy above limestone-tiled floors and timber Windsor chairs, the colonnade opening directly onto the pool terrace. Striped teak sun loungers at the infinity pool, framed by tall coconut palms and the silhouette of Île aux Cerfs beyond, give the outdoor spaces a quietly composed classicism.

"Right from reservation, Stephano was very efficient with all details and information concerning our staycation. Check in by Clarel was swift and we were also greeted by Jo Ann Marchant one of the managers whom I approached for two issues which were promptly taken care of. We had booked 2 rooms and were upgraded to the next category . The room was very spacious and luxurious. The property is a jem nestled in the Est coast of the island with several beaches to explore. We loved it. Also has many added benefits such as boat shuttles to 2 private islands. Our lunch at Coco's beach was perfect. The food was very tasty and delicately prepared and served. Dinner & breakfast at TSk was rather good but could be better, the variety specially for dinner was limited. Nicolle tried her best to offer a good customer service. We also enjoyed lunch at ile margenie resturant. Yusuf rightly suggested the truffle pizza and it was delicious. My son enjoyed golfing at ile aux cerfs, I gelt relaxed at the spa , adults pool and jacuzzi while my little one was pampered at the kids club. A must if you are planning to visit mauritius. We had a memorable staycation. Special mention for Mahfooz and Anais at the reception who were attentive to our requests."

From the moment you arrive, everything feels luxurious, warm, and welcoming. The food was absolutely amazing, with so many beautiful dining experiences to enjoy. The hotel facilities are excellent, offering something for everyone -from paddle activities and relaxing by the beach to unforgettable trips to Île aux Cerfs. The spa was also a highlight, providing the perfect space to unwind and recharge. A very special thank you to Jessen and Alizee for making our stay even more memorable by guiding us to the best experiences the hotel has to offer. They are such an amazing team, and their kindness and attention to detail made all the difference. It was truly lovely staying at Shangri-La, and I cannot wait to return again."

"We just returned from a truly wonderful family stay at a beautiful 5-star beachfront hotel, and it exceeded our expectations in so many ways. From the moment we arrived, the welcome was warm and effortless. The staff were consistently attentive without being intrusive, and they made a genuine effort to ensure our kids felt just as valued as the adults. Little touches—like welcome treats and thoughtful room setup—made a big difference. The room itself was spacious, spotless, and perfectly designed for a family stay. Waking up to the sound of the ocean and stepping out to that view in the morning was something special. The beach was just steps away—clean, safe, and ideal for both relaxing and letting the teens alone. Food was another highlight. There was plenty of variety, and everything we tried was fresh and well-prepared. Even the pickiest eater in our family found something to enjoy, which says a lot. What stood out most, though, was the atmosphere. It managed to feel luxurious without being stiff—comfortable, welcoming, and genuinely relaxing. Whether it was lounging by the pool, enjoying the beach, or just unwinding as a family, everything was always amazing. All in all, it was a memorable stay and exactly what we needed as a family. We left feeling refreshed, happy, and already thinking about when we might return. Special thanks to Bobby Neergapen, the Executive Sous Chef for his professional approach to match our food demands. Thank you very much Deepmala for providing everything we needed in our room and always asking if everything okay with a natural smile. Special thanks to Ricardo at the teens club who made the kids always feel at ease. We will treasure the small gifts we got : the polo shirts and water bottles. Additionally, we had one of the best Spa Experience at Chi Spa. The therapists were very friendly and knowledgeable. Myself and my wife would like to thank the whole team for the couple massage and the sauna and steam bath sessions."

"Probably the best hotel I’ve ever stayed in. Entering this place is like stepping out of the real world into a parallel universe called paradise. And isn’t that the point of a holiday. You are greeted like royalty on arrival here and the treatment you receive, from entering into this little paradise until departure, never, ever falters - without exception, every member of staff we encountered was smiley , charming and helpful . The overall guest experience here is incredible. The lobby is beautiful with its tantalising view across to the pool and glimpse of the beach. You are welcomed with a drink and a refreshing cold towel and your guest relations person introduces you to everything . We had the lovely Dast, he was very efficient. We stayed in the frangipani room looking at the ocean, first floor, I liked this very much. The room was spacious with a gorgeous balcony and bathroom , beds are super comfy and the daily treats and gifts they leave you are so sweet. Your own beach bag and flip flops await, for example ,and there is plenty of free water in the room every day , as well as on the beach, as well thoughtful little treats left at turn down . The food, oh my goodness, the food. It is unbelievably good throughout the hotel. They manage a busy breakfast well in TSk and you are always welcomed with a smile. Anything you wanted for breakfast or indeed could dream of seems to be there. Fruits , smoothies, pastries. eggs. Crepes , noodle selections , smoked salmon and other cold meats , hot selection, breads ..bagels , I was just amazed by it all . We ate in TSK one night , the buffet that evening was amazing including fresh lobster, beef wellington .. an incredibly high level of catering for the hotel’s main restaurant. Sometimes it was busy with families but you still felt like you were having an elegant holiday dinner. Other evenings , being on half board which worked well, we tried the other restaurants in the hotel and none of them were a disappointment. I like Cocos for the beach setting and I enjoyed Safran as an alternative proposition within the hotel (our daughter loved the Indian food) .. We tried Kushi too and I particularly enjoyed the sushi starters and cod dish there . We never had a disappointing meal throughout our stay . Every dinner was a highlight. Special mention must be given to Prakash who went out of his way to be ever present throughout our stay and seamlessly oversees every restaurant’s smooth operation. The entire team from breakfast to dinner is doing an amazing job. We loved the beaches , and I just adored going across to the island where you can truly relax and enjoy a natural beach setting (after being pampered on arrival by the lovely man who greets you and offers to clean your sunglasses ) . Free waterspouts are on offer from the cocos beach side . We signed up for water skiing and thoroughly enjoyed that session - both my daughter and I made it up on the water skis . A holiday memory to treasure. The adult pool also is a beautiful area to chill out by. Gardens around this part are very pretty and the grounds team are working hard each day . Back in reality now and the whole experience really does feel like we lived the dream. I would love to go back, and certainly hope to experience this all again some day. Don’t hesitate to choose this hotel , you will not be disappointed. Thank you to each and every one of the staff who make this place so special."

The room is spotless, beautifully designed, and offers a stunning view, creating an immediate sense of comfort and relaxation. Every detail, from the soft bedding to the quiet atmosphere, ensures a restful stay. Delicious meals, prompt service, and thoughtful amenities like a spa or pool add to the enjoyment. By the time you leave, you feel refreshed, satisfied, and already looking forward to returning. A special mention for Ricardo as well who is a very nice guy."
