PB hotel design editorial

Strung across a series of connected peninsulas and a private island on Mauritius's east coast, where the lagoon at Trou d'Eau Douce shelters one of the island's most protected stretches of turquoise water, Shangri-La Le Touessrok has always drawn its identity more from geography than from architectural bravado. The resort's low-rise pavilions — thatched roofs stepping down through dense casuarina and palm canopy to the sand — defer to the landscape rather than commanding it, the aerial view revealing just how thoroughly the built fabric dissolves into the green. A substantial renovation completed in 2016 refreshed the 200-room property, with interiors moving toward a cleaner, more contemporary palette while retaining the warm timber framing and basalt stonework that connect the architecture to local Mauritian material culture. The guest rooms present two distinct registers across the property: older garden-facing categories grounded in dark timber beds, coral-motif headboards, and terracotta floor tiles, while the refurbished overwater and beachfront suites adopt a lighter language — bleached wood screens, jute rugs, curved upholstered seating in warm ivory, and amber velvet cushions that echo the lagoon light at dusk. In the main restaurant, a double-height vaulted ceiling with white-painted exposed ribs creates an airy structural canopy above limestone-tiled floors and timber Windsor chairs, the colonnade opening directly onto the pool terrace. Striped teak sun loungers at the infinity pool, framed by tall coconut palms and the silhouette of Île aux Cerfs beyond, give the outdoor spaces a quietly composed classicism.

"We did a last minute booking and thankful to Mafooz and Vignesh who were amazing in terms of the responsiveness for arranging our stay. We badly needed a break and it was an out of the world experience. At the restaurant, Poinen and Shabnam were amazing hosts to us- accommodating our requests - huge thanks to them! At the main restaurant we had Rekha, Devika and team who paid special attention to our needs too, especially given we had a baby with us. The food was amazing each day. Even the F&B manager was down to earth and so humble. From the reception till room service or restaurant everything was just perfect for our small get away. Much love to you all!"

"Everything about the Shangri La Mauritius is perfect. It’s the best holiday we’ve ever had. When we arrived, a gong was sounded to announce our arrival. From the moment that we walked in, we were made to feel special. Drinks & mango were given to us while we went through the check in process. The staff are so attentive & happy to help you any way they can. The food WAS exceptional from the Indian restaurant Safran, Japanese Kushi & different palletes at TSK. Our room was without doubt, the best hotel room I’ve ever had the privilege to stay in. It was a Frangipani junior suite with sea view . The view was truly breathtaking. The hotel accommodates everything you need for a wonderful holiday. Sporting facilities from a padel court, tennis courts & a table tennis table to a 130 year old tortoise who eats a mountain of food. Water sports are also a plenty from splash cats to kayaks & paddleboards, this hotel has it all. The Sega bar has nightly music from local artists ready to entertain. The coco beach bar offers à la carte breakfasts, Cocktails to enjoy in happy hour & fine dining in the evenings. The Frangipani wing that we stayed on had an adult only pool should you need it. There are family pools in the coral & hibiscus wings also within the hotel. We were lucky to go on a boat ride from the hotel jetty where we got to see some very cheeky little monkeys up close. The captain of the boat gave my wife some food to feed them. We also saw a sea turtle & a family of dolphins while we were out on the water. So wonderful. The hotel also owns another island just a 10 minute boat ride away from the hotel Jetty. A real must see. Finally all I can say is a special thank you to Akshay on reception, Anil at the coco beach bar & Kirin & Sanjay on housekeeping who went above & beyond to make the whole holiday so special. Thank you all."

"My stay at this hotel has been absolutely exceptional from beginning to end. Every detail was thoughtfully curated, creating a truly luxurious, peaceful, and unforgettable experience. A very special thank you to Deepmala, who took such wonderful care of my room throughout my stay. The cleanliness was impeccable every single day, and the attention to detail made me feel genuinely cared for and comfortable. The room was always beautifully prepared, elegant, fresh, and incredibly relaxing. I would also like to sincerely thank Deepak and Pareses for their kindness, professionalism, and warm hospitality. They were always attentive, welcoming, and ready to help with a smile, which made my stay even more special. The hotel itself is simply incredible. The atmosphere, the breathtaking views, the beauty of the rooms, and the overall sense of calm and refinement make this place truly outstanding. Every space feels elegant yet warm and inviting. The breakfast restaurant staff were also absolutely perfect every morning. Their kindness, attentiveness, warm smiles, and excellent service made each morning feel special and welcoming. Starting the day in such a beautiful atmosphere with such caring staff was a true pleasure. The restaurants throughout the hotel were all amazing, every team member was welcoming and attentive, and the food was consistently excellent. Each meal felt like a beautiful experience, with high-quality ingredients, presentation, and exceptional service. What impressed me most was the genuine hospitality and care from everyone throughout the hotel. The level of service is truly world-class, and it is rare to feel so welcomed and appreciated during a stay. Thank you for making my time here so memorable. I leave with beautiful memories and cannot wait to return again."

"Stayed at Shangri La from 15 to 21 May on full board and honestly it was an amazing experience. The food was excellent and there was too much of it. I am not a fan of sea food so I avoided this but there was plenty of options for me. The food was halal also except for the pork products obviously. Looking back I probably should have gone half board. The service was exceptional and probably the best I have experienced on holiday. Every single person we came across was welcoming and always smiling and friendly. You really do get what you pay for. Special mention to Parwez who was very good throughout our stay, honestly everyone was amazing. The view from our room was amazing and we were just a short walk from the restaurants. The water activities were also great and added a lot to the experience. If only they had jet ski! The island was also good for people that just want to relax. Only left the resort once and that was for a massage at a local spa. Tip: 1. bring good quality sea shoes 2. Pre-book your restaurants for your stay in advance for dinner by emailing them as you cannot get a reservation on the day or just walk in. 3. Tip the hotel staff as a token of appreciation. They work incredibly hard and provide a great service When we arrived they had our itenary printed out for our stay which we pre-booked with their reservation team. Again, another great touch adding to the customer service. Would definitely recommend. My first stay at a Shangri-La resort and I am leaving with a good impression"
