PB hotel design editorial

At the foot of Le Morne Brabant — the UNESCO World Heritage basalt monolith that rises some 556 metres from Mauritius's southwestern peninsula — the JW Marriott Mauritius Resort commands one of the Indian Ocean's most geographically charged settings, the mountain's sheer cliffs dropping almost directly behind the property's slate-roofed pavilions. The low-rise massing, with its white-painted colonnades, louvered shutters, and steeply pitched rooflines, draws from the Franco-Mauritian plantation vernacular — colonial architecture filtered through a contemporary resort lens, kept deliberately horizontal so as not to compete with the escarpment overhead. Across its 178 suites, the interiors balance two registers: rooms with panelled teak four-poster beds, tongue-and-groove timber ceilings, wicker side tables, and black-and-white photography of the island's fishing culture sit alongside lighter, more contemporary configurations with exposed rafter ceilings, pale tile floors, louvred balcony doors, and teak shelving units opening directly toward the lagoon. The beach restaurant makes the more architectural argument — rough-hewn timber columns and unfinished rafters assembled into an open-sided structure with the atmosphere of a repurposed fishing warehouse, local basalt stone walls anchoring the perimeter while the deck planking dissolves into the sand. An elongated infinity pool terrace steps toward the beach through a sequence of cabana-lined terraces, the geometry interrupted by planted islands of palm and pandanus. Taken together, the resort holds the tension between colonial memory and contemporary comfort more honestly than most properties in this corner of Mauritius.

"I am so proud and incredibly happy with my stay at The St. Regis Mauritius! Currently, I am spending my last two nights at the Shangri-La, as I wanted to try it out and compare the two. Unfortunately, it was a huge mistake. The service, room service, and food at Shangri-La are sub-par, and I highly advise everyone not to repeat my mistake. Do yourself a favor and stay at The St. Regis instead! I honestly wish I could go back to St. Regis just to leave Mauritius with a beautiful final memory, but unfortunately, I’ve already paid here and can’t cancel. St. Regis gave me the most wonderful impression of Mauritian hospitality; your food is delicious, and your service is hands down the best I have ever experienced across all 5-star hotels worldwide. I love you, St. Regis, and I truly wish I could come back to you right now!""

"Where to start, from arrival to last day our experience at St Regis was amazing!!! Service throughout our holiday from all staff courteous and friendly everyone works so hard to make your stay a memorable one. We returned to celebrate our 25th Anniversary and Gerald arranged a magical dinner on the beach for us. We had flowers and a cake delivered to our room and we felt very spoilt! Our room was upgraded to a suite in the Manor House which was the icing on the cake and totally unexpected!! Our butler Shahid went over and above with his personal service making sure we had everything to make us happy. Booking our restaurants arranging a hire car in fact nothing was too much. Impeccable service. Thank you Shahid for even taking our photos around the grounds as we celebrated our anniversary ❤️ Other names to mention just a few that made our holiday Ryan ,Hansley , Deevik, and many more wonderful staff in all restaurants and on the beach. Thank you to all of you for making our holiday one we will always remember ❤️"
