PB hotel design editorial

At the foot of Le Morne Brabant — the UNESCO World Heritage basalt monolith that rises some 556 metres from Mauritius's southwestern peninsula — the JW Marriott Mauritius Resort commands one of the Indian Ocean's most geographically charged settings, the mountain's sheer cliffs dropping almost directly behind the property's slate-roofed pavilions. The low-rise massing, with its white-painted colonnades, louvered shutters, and steeply pitched rooflines, draws from the Franco-Mauritian plantation vernacular — colonial architecture filtered through a contemporary resort lens, kept deliberately horizontal so as not to compete with the escarpment overhead. Across its 178 suites, the interiors balance two registers: rooms with panelled teak four-poster beds, tongue-and-groove timber ceilings, wicker side tables, and black-and-white photography of the island's fishing culture sit alongside lighter, more contemporary configurations with exposed rafter ceilings, pale tile floors, louvred balcony doors, and teak shelving units opening directly toward the lagoon. The beach restaurant makes the more architectural argument — rough-hewn timber columns and unfinished rafters assembled into an open-sided structure with the atmosphere of a repurposed fishing warehouse, local basalt stone walls anchoring the perimeter while the deck planking dissolves into the sand. An elongated infinity pool terrace steps toward the beach through a sequence of cabana-lined terraces, the geometry interrupted by planted islands of palm and pandanus. Taken together, the resort holds the tension between colonial memory and contemporary comfort more honestly than most properties in this corner of Mauritius.

"I visited in March but only had time now to write the review. I can't speak highly enough about this hotel, the food, the setting, and most importantly, the staff. The service was impeccable and we were made to feel at home from day 1. We travelled with a 1 year old, and the staff were so incredible in making our stay with him enjoyable. Gifts, food options and the cot-bed were all fantastic. People really made a fuss with him and always remember his name. Staff shout-outs to the mgmt team: Jesshika, Jessica, Reena and all the staff at breakfast and lunch. Viresh was a gentleman! The staff at the Indian restaurant - Ashywyna, Nikhil etc were also fantastic the two times we visited. A huge shout-out to the Hotel F+B Manager Suresh (? - sorry, I forgot the name!) who met us on arrival and spoke to us everyday ensuring our visit was great; we had lovely convos with him, and our butler Ravi who was incredibly helpful. The beach is incredibly clean and just paradise. I cannot wait to return one day in the future, we are constantly talking about it! Thank you!"

"We had the most wonderful holiday at the St Regis and it is by far the best holiday we have had! The location is stunning and Mauritius is a very beautiful place and there is lots to explore around the island. The hotel itself is immaculate and this is clearly down to the hard work of the staff and attention to detail. The rooms are beautiful and exceptionally well kept by the housekeeping team. The food is also incredible at all of the restaurants including pool/beach side. Nothing is too much trouble and we had amazing butlers Gary and Nikhil who made our stay extra special which included a surprise for my husband’s birthday. You really feel that everyone is invested in you having a wonderful stay. We couldn’t recommend higher and would love to return."

"Our stay at this magical hotel exceeded all of our expectations, even though we have stayed at several St. Regis properties around the world. This is truly a spectacular place, with a breathtaking beach and exceptional service. A very special thank you to Vicky at the beach, who took wonderful care of us every single day. She made us feel completely at home with her kindness, thoughtfulness, and impeccable manners. Her hospitality is simply beyond words. We would also like to sincerely thank the valet team, Baba and Sylvester, for their professionalism and warm welcome every day. A heartfelt thank you as well to the security staff at the entrance, Rakhee and Annaya. They were always incredibly welcoming, caring, and attentive. Every time we left or returned to the hotel, they greeted us with genuine smiles and made us feel as though we were coming home. The reception team, especially Anarkhana and Maxim, were equally warm, professional, and always ready to assist with anything we needed. Finally, our deepest gratitude goes to the incredible butler team: KERTISHA, TEJ, SHARMILLA, GRA CIA. Their service was truly flawless. They were always available, attentive, proactive, and ready to fulfill absolutely any request with grace and efficiency. Their dedication and attention to detail represent the very essence of St. Regis excellence. What makes this St. Regis truly magical is not only its stunning location but, above all, its extraordinary people. They made our stay unforgettable, and we felt genuinely cared for from the moment we arrived until the moment we left. We cannot wait to return. Thank you to everyone for creating such an unforgettable experience."

"I read A LOT of reviews when deciding on where to book for our honeymoon, and subsequently picking up tips and finding information, so it’s only fair I leave one in return. The St Regis Le Morne is simply stunning. Gorgeous decor, wonderful staff, picture perfect beach, relaxing spa treatments, and delicious food. I won’t get into huge detail as many others have covered this already, but if you’re looking for a luxurious and relaxing stay in beautiful surroundings then this is the place for you. There are many small details which make the stay special, from fresh coconuts, to the stations on the beach with suncream (factor 50), fruit & water, the beach bag in the rooms (along with flip flops), plus sleep masks, pillow spray, etc. The beds are insanely comfortable - it was very hard coming back to our own basic double bed! We took advantage of the free water sports including kayak, glass bottom boat, and waterskiing, and there’s a programme of daily free activities ranging from cinema to cooking demonstrations to instructor led HIIT and yoga sessions. I’d definitely recommend the bike tour and the guided walk up Le Morne to a viewpoint. Special mention to our butler Keertisha who was a ray of sunshine and just an absolute delight. So welcoming, and really made sure our stay was extra special. We were there for our honeymoon, and I didn’t expect anything beyond perhaps a welcome bottle of fizz, but she also helped celebrate our honeymoon with sunset sabrage later in our stay, and also organised a cake, more fizz, and balloons for my husband’s birthday (which fell shortly after our stay and we hadn’t mentioned, but they had noted from his passport). We visited end of April/early May as a couple on honeymoon.."
