PB hotel design editorial

Where the Sea of Cortez meets the Pacific at the tip of the Baja Peninsula, a stretch of volcanic rock and pale sand was chosen in 2002 as the site for Esperanza, Auberge Resorts Collection's first foray into Mexico. The architecture, shaped around the existing geology rather than imposed upon it, draws heavily from hacienda vernacular — rough-hewn local stone walls, thatched palapa roofs, and low-slung structures that step down the coastal bluff in terraces rather than rising against the horizon. The impression at dusk, when lanterns and submerged pool lighting warm the stonework against a darkening Pacific sky, carries far more of a private Mexican estate than a resort compound. Interiors across the 57 suites and casitas draw from a vocabulary of bleached timber, natural linen, and artisan craft that keeps the rooms grounded in regional material culture. Some accommodate palapa ceilings of woven palm, their circular geometry borrowed from traditional Baja coastal construction, while others feature whitewashed beam ceilings with gauzy draped canopies above king beds and weathered pine cabinetry with iron hardware. Teak sun loungers line the tiered pool terraces that cascade toward the beach, where native agave and desert plantings soften the transition between landscaped terraces and raw coastline. Outdoor fire features set within low stone walls extend the social life of the property after sunset, the geometry of the long linear fire trench — visible in the images — grounding outdoor dining in something elemental rather than decorative.

About

Waves crash along the rocks, sending salty spray into air warmed by brilliant sunshine. This centuries-old rhythm helped shape Cabo's Punta Ballena coastline, named for its resemblance to a whale's tail. "My stay at Esperanza was honestly perfection from start to finish. Every single detail felt thoughtful, luxurious, and effortless. The property itself is absolutely stunning, the service was beyond exceptional, and the entire experience felt peaceful, elevated, and so special. The rooms were beautiful, the food was incredible, and the atmosphere was exactly what you hope for in Cabo… relaxing, chic, and unforgettable. Every staff member made me feel genuinely cared for, and there was never a moment where something felt overlooked. Truly one of those rare places where the experience somehow exceeds the photos. I left already thinking about when I can come back. Could not recommend Esperanza more highly!"

"We normally stay at the Waldorf Astoria but decided to try something different here. Our only mistake was splitting our time between Esperanza and the Hilton hotel (not WA but the one closer to the airport). We should have stayed at Esperanza the full week. The food was delicious at the property restaurants, and we also tried the different experiences like the palapas rental. We did it the entire day, starting off with yoga in the morning and ending with s’mores and fireworks. It was such an amazing experience and time. The service was top notch. We loved this place and look forward to returning."

"Beautiful resort with amazing service. The spa is outstanding; the pools and grounds are immaculate. The food is great overall however Cocina del Mar is a beautiful restaurant with great views; however i would just go for the pictures as we had better meals elsewhere. The pools are stunning with food that is very good. Ruben was our butler and was on top of things and always available. Only slight negative is the transportation during the stay to other places. They push you to use their service and like you to have the driver stay close by - which seems fine - but for the price is not worth it. Great vacation and a gorgeous resort"

"We splurged for our 15 year anniversary. This is a beautiful resort with an amazing staff, everyone worked hard to make sure we had a great time. Little touches like surprise champagne and dessert for our anniversary was a wonderful touch. Food was excellent but expensive. Beach is beautiful but rocky/not swimmable. This was our first trip without kids- the atmosphere here was quiet and tranquil and I am not sure I would want to bring my kids but some people do."

"My first stay at Esperanza left me with mixed feelings. While the property is beautiful, and the staff is amazing, the resort's fee structure creates a frustrating disconnect between what you pay for and what you actually get. The Positives:The resort itself is gorgeous, and the food and drinks are excellent. The front-line staff is genuinely warm. Our butler, Alexis, was a major highlight—he was incredibly prompt, attentive, and took great care of us throughout our stay. The Logistics: Like most luxury resorts in Cabo, there is a standard 25% service charge meant for the employees. I expected this and happily paid roughly $3,750 in service fees on top of the $15,000 cost for our villa stay for 4 nights. Because we valued the staff's hard work, my wife and I also added additional tips out of pocket at every meal. The Critique & False Promise: When you pay nearly $18,000 for a 4 night stay, there is an implicit promise that you are buying access to a world-class luxury lifestyle. Finding out after you arrive that basic resort life is gated behind annoying extra fees feels like a false promise. Charging $112 per person for a morning hike and $45 an hour for pickleball court feels excessive. Worse, ibeing charged extra for a cappuccino or even bottled water at a "complimentary " breakfast feels like price gouging. It feels dishonest to say you have access to this great resort when you are paying thousands of dollars a night, when in reality, there are hidden catches. I even gave the resort an opportunity to address this while we were there. I mentioned to Alexis that my family of five would love to go on the hike, or play pickleball but paying an extra $500+ (plus the service charge) for a basic walk was a non-starter. He promised to communicate this to management, but we never received any response or follow-up. Conclusion: This nickel-and-diming creates a mental block. Instead of feeling pampered and at home for those 4 days our stay felt too transactional instead of hospitable. I travel to Cabo four times a year and switch between Las Ventanas, One&Only Palmilla, Waldorf Astoria Pedregal, or the Four Seasons properties. Those resorts deliver a seamless, transparent luxury experience. Esperanza does not. I would have gladly made Esparanza a frequent place to visit however I will be avoiding this property in the future."
