PB hotel design editorial

Where the Sea of Cortez meets the Pacific at the tip of the Baja Peninsula, a stretch of volcanic rock and pale sand was chosen in 2002 as the site for Esperanza, Auberge Resorts Collection's first foray into Mexico. The architecture, shaped around the existing geology rather than imposed upon it, draws heavily from hacienda vernacular — rough-hewn local stone walls, thatched palapa roofs, and low-slung structures that step down the coastal bluff in terraces rather than rising against the horizon. The impression at dusk, when lanterns and submerged pool lighting warm the stonework against a darkening Pacific sky, carries far more of a private Mexican estate than a resort compound. Interiors across the 57 suites and casitas draw from a vocabulary of bleached timber, natural linen, and artisan craft that keeps the rooms grounded in regional material culture. Some accommodate palapa ceilings of woven palm, their circular geometry borrowed from traditional Baja coastal construction, while others feature whitewashed beam ceilings with gauzy draped canopies above king beds and weathered pine cabinetry with iron hardware. Teak sun loungers line the tiered pool terraces that cascade toward the beach, where native agave and desert plantings soften the transition between landscaped terraces and raw coastline. Outdoor fire features set within low stone walls extend the social life of the property after sunset, the geometry of the long linear fire trench — visible in the images — grounding outdoor dining in something elemental rather than decorative.

About

Waves crash along the rocks, sending salty spray into air warmed by brilliant sunshine. This centuries-old rhythm helped shape Cabo's Punta Ballena coastline, named for its resemblance to a whale's tail. You'll feel at harmony with the vivid sensations of Baja California-and with the Esperanza family.

"We just celebrated my husband’s 40th birthday at Esperanza and it was one of the most beautiful and relaxing trips we’ve ever taken. What really sets Esperanza apart are the property and the staff. The views from the property are just incredible. The rocky coastline, the constant whale sightings, beautiful sunrises and sunsets - it was truly breathtaking. I also loved the design of the resort: clean and modern feeling but with a nod to traditional Mexican artistry and crafts. We had an ocean view king casita on a top floor and got to fall asleep to the sound of the ocean coming through the thatched roof. Magical. The staff was incredible. Truly so kind, friendly, and accommodating. We were greeted with welcome drinks and a food spread in our room when we arrived, nightly turn down service meant coming back to a newly cleaned room stocked with ice, a small Mexican handicraft, candles lit throughout the room and balcony, and a bedside table prepared with cups, water, and slippers on the floor. One night at turndown, housekeeping saw I had a book on my bedside and even left me with a beautiful leather Esperanza bookmark. Little touches like that felt so thoughtful! For my husbands’s birthday, concierge helped me arrange a gorgeous private dinner down on the beach with live music. Everyone called us by name throughout our stay and made us feel so welcome and taken care of. The food had some true standouts (the mini pork tacos on the snack menu at Cocina Del Mar - my favorite food of the trip!) and then some dishes that were fine but didn’t blow us away. Same with the drinks. Some were really great and others felt like they needed a little bit of tweaking. 4/5 stars though. Very solid. Caution to those with mobility issues: there’s lots of uneven ground and stairs that aren’t consistent heights and depths. You can get golf carts to transport you around if needed. Overall this was a 5 star experience and we can’t wait to return!"

"We went to Esperanza for my brother's wedding. Everything was exceptional from the second we were met at the airport to the time we were dropped off at the end of our stay. I can't say enough good things about the staff (and I mean EVERY member of the staff), the food (SO delicious), and the resort grounds overall (GORGEOUS). If you are travelling to Cabo, this is the place to stay!!!"

"The Esperanza can’t be beat. It’s our favorite place to stay in Cabo. The resort is gorgeous. Everyone is so friendly, every staff member from the gardeners to the hospitality staff say hola and give you a big smile. The restaurants on the property are amazing. All have their own individuality but are equally delicious. We continue to go back every year!"

"Beautiful property and good selection of restaurants. Service is good both in room and pools. No long beach walks are possible and not much more to do around the resort besides some daily activities the resort charges handsomely for. Things to be aware of…food and drink prices are exceptionally high and they charge for every additional activity. A couple of examples are, a margarita at the pool is $30. As mentioned above they will charge for every activity offered at the resort. Not just a nominal fee but once again excess. Like $52 per hour for pickleball, $111 for a 3 mile hike. They also take advantage of you with an airport pick up at $215. Uber is $70 and resort taxi is $95 to return to the airport. I fully expect there be a premium at a resort such as Esperanza but I don’t appreciate being taken advantage of when they know you are a captive audience."
