PB hotel design editorial

On a rocky promontory at the tip of the Baja California Peninsula, where the Sea of Cortez meets the Pacific, a whitewashed hacienda compound has anchored the landscape since 1956 — making One&Only Palmilla one of the oldest luxury resort hotels in Los Cabos, predating the corridor's development boom by decades. Originally built by Don Abelardo Rodríguez, son of a former Mexican president, the property was conceived as a private fishing retreat before evolving into a hotel. Its low-rise Mission-style architecture — terracotta rooflines, arched colonnades, thick rendered walls — follows the natural contours of the headland rather than imposing on them, a discipline that later resort construction in the region largely abandoned. The interiors balance two registers visible across the room categories: older casita suites carry exposed beam ceilings, travertine floors in a herringbone pattern, and leather-paneled headboards with pressed fretwork detailing, their palette anchored by cobalt blue against warm sand tones that echo Baja's desert coast. Newer villa accommodations shift toward a more contemporary sensibility, with floor-to-ceiling sliding glass walls, richly veined onyx feature walls, and polished gold-lacquered ceiling recesses above teak-framed beds. The open-air restaurant, hung with tiered wrought-iron lanterns etched in geometric relief, dissolves at its edges into a palm-lined terrace facing the sea. The infinity pool, framed by columnar palms reflected at golden hour, remains the property's most composed and enduring spatial gesture.

"We had a wonderful stay at Palmilla. The room was ocean view and spacious with a private infinity pool but the best was the staff, especially Lulu and Elisa who were so helpful with anything we might need. One thing that would be a positive addition to the room is a mini fridge. The resort is on a swimmable beach which is not always the case in Cabo. We spent several days lounging beachside, snorkeling and paddleboarding. I appreciate that there was no extra charge for the beach equipment. We tried several of the restaurants and all were superb. We were a bit surprised by the food prices though given the cost of accommodations, maybe we shouldn't have been. We live in a very high cost area and the prices at Palmilla were more than we pay here for a Michelin one or two star restaurant."

"One of the best nights of sleep ever, the bed is WOW WOW WOW comfortable. The staff is lovely and gracious throughout the property. Thoughtful and attentive. The location is perfetion and we saw whales all day long (thanks for the binoculars and for blowing the horns!)....And the breakfast was amazing, so was the gym. Despite a hiccup with not cleaning my room one day, this is definitely five stars and pure magic. Thanks for the glass hummingbird upon departure."

"Although it started on the wrong foot we had the most wonderful vacation at Palmilla. The Good: everything. Beautiful hotel and property. Great food. Separate adult only pool. Beautiful rooms Great family facilities (pool, camp, etc.) And the most amazing, warm, and friendliest service ever. Without exception every person we dealt with was over the top for service and really showed they cared about our happiness. The Bad: The soap was hard to unwrap. Lol The ugly: On arrival we were put in a different inferior room than promised. We were very disappointed and actually (as repeat visitors) insulted about this. After our first night the problem was corrected, amends were made, and we were moved to our Casita beach suite as originally promised. Special thanks to Lulu, Elissa who always had everything we like always waiting for us, couldn’t have better people to take care of us, would definitely wish for them next year, all the other staff who were so obliging and caring. The poolside staff were all amazing, sorry I don’t have names but couldn’t have better and more helpful people each day. the whole group at delicious Breeze Restaurant. Can only remember some names Ana, Jose, Manny, Phillipe and everyone else who always showed such kindness and care including the girls when you checked in for breakfast each day. The Spa was fantastic and special shout out to Samantha. Jazmin was very kind and helpful to resolve our first night . Can’t wait to get back there next year.🤞🙏 Thank you to the whole team for all of our beautiful gifts They mean so much to us .🙏"

"This was our 5th or 6th return to One & Only Palmilla and it was even more wonderful this time around. The people and service were so outstanding and made us feel part of the O&O family. From the pool attendants to the restaurants and bars we felt welcomed by staff that always had a smile and anticipated our every need. We want to make a special call out to hosts Anselmo and Elias. They took such wonderful care of us and made sure that we had everything we needed and some things we didn’t realize we needed. They were so warm and caring, we can’t sing their praises enough. We celebrated my wife’s birthday at the resort and she was so surprised at the cake and balloons in our room, the way her locker was so beautifully decorated with birthday greetings and cards at the spa and just the way she was celebrated all around. It was magical. We look forward to our return visit next year to reconnect with the staff and hopefully Anselmo and Elias."

"We visited the spa at One&Only Palmilla expecting a world-class wellness experience. Instead, the experience was underwhelming and poorly managed. The spa scheduled our services incorrectly, creating overlapping appointments. Our Temazcal ceremony was inturrupted midway to rush us to the next service, disrupting what should have been a calm and restorative experience. They let us finish and pushed our massages back, but it really undermined the whole rebirth vibes. Billing was another issue. After spending several hours (and several thousands) at the spa, we were then held up for about 30 minutes because of a billing error that the spa had made. Instead of quickly resolving their mistake, they forced us to wait while staff tried to sort it out (turns out we did not owe the additional money they were trying to charge us after all!). The delay caused us to arrive late to dinner and miss part of an evening event we had planned. Dinner at Hoshi created serious concerns as well. We informed staff of a food allergy multiple times and ordered a dish clearly marked as not containing that allergen. After we had already eaten part of it, staff returned to tell us the dish actually did contain the allergen. For an experience costing thousands of dollars, the service should be seamless and attentive. Instead, it was stressful and disappointing. I would not return."
