PB hotel design editorial

Carved into the volcanic hillside above the Sea of Cortez at El Ranchito, where the Baja peninsula narrows before its final drop toward Land's End, the architecture here takes its cues from the desert terrain rather than imposing upon it. Zadun, A Ritz-Carlton Reserve, opened in 2018 across roughly 300 acres of protected land, its low-slung pavilions and villas stepping down the escarpment in a language of rough-cut local stone, dark steel screens, and rammed-earth tones that dissolve into the surrounding scrub and cardón cactus. The perforated tower visible at the resort's heart — a sculptural lantern of laser-cut metal — functions less as architecture than as a sundial, the Cortez light burning straight through it at dusk. The 115 suites and villas carry that material restraint indoors: travertine-look tile flooring, walnut-framed floor-to-ceiling pivot doors that fold entirely away to merge bedroom with terrace, and handwoven indigo textiles on beds and upholstered benches that reference the craft traditions of Oaxaca and the Mexican Pacific coast. Leather director's chairs and dark-stained wood seating groups furnish the terraces with the ease of a well-used private house rather than managed resort furniture. At the beach club, a palapa-style canopy of bundled reed shelters woven-rope lounge chairs and a concrete bar counter, the whole structure framed against the Pacific in a composition that feels as much fishing village as five-star reserve.

"Incredible experience. I stayed at this property with some friends and it was one of the best decisions I made. Not only was beautiful and with incredible service, but it felt so safe and secluded, away from all the noise of San Lucas. I will be back!"

"Glitzy property in a raw development full of dirt and concrete shells of half-finished buildings. Booked suite with a view and plunge pool for anniversary trip— unfortunately with a great view of the dirt and construction. We settled in and tried to look the other way. On our anniversary, as we sipped champagne, the bulldozers started rolling immediately behind us. The drivers had a great view of us by our plunge pool. After an hour or two of complaining we were moved to a nicer room— although the beep, beep, beep of the bulldozers was still audible. We were also greeted by a big cockroach. Pluses: - aspects of the property are lovely, especially the bar Candil - food is spotty but decent overall - service often great but inconsistent Minuses: - hotel is smack dab in an active construction zone - management’s efforts at remediation were inadequate - room service food is meh - pool attendants often look the other way when you need chairs set up Bottom line: we won’t be back!"

"Sadly, Zadun didn’t do it for us. It felt more like a “regular” Ritz, and frankly we’ve enjoyed the regular ones more than this property. For reference to understand my review, we typically stay at Ritz, Belmond, One&Only, Rosewood, Montage, Four Seasons, Oetker, and Airelles properties. Service was lacking immensely at the pool and beach even though the hotel was at 25% occupancy. The staff just didn’t seem happy or passionate about hospitality like I’ve seen at other luxury hotels. There were staff just hanging around doing nothing. I also never saw a hotel manager, which you’d typically see or meet one at a 5 star. The food was extremely overpriced, and the wine and champagne selection was lacking. Example: Only one option for champagne for $70 a glass of Billecart Salmon? We always felt like a burden at the pool, beach, and the bars - especially Candil. I’m still giving it 4 stars because the rooms are excellent and food was good despite being extremely overpriced. Our butlers Edwin and Edgar, Jorge at the bar, and Gabriel at Humo were stand out employees as well. I thought the spa (for a wellness resort with Sensei) was missing the warmth from staff, care, and tranquility. I felt rushed, there was no discussion, and no aromatherapy options. I was glad that I opted to not do the wellness program. The coffee station is also not good. Only one person was working at the register and making drinks, and there was nowhere to sit and enjoy your coffee. The coffee itself was not good. What was also strange is there’s a swim up pool bar and beach bar, but there was never anyone working them. We’re reluctant to try any other Reserves as this was our first Reserve property."

"I cannot stress enough how excellent our time at Zadun in Los Cabo was. It exceeded our expectations in every way. From the beautiful resort grounds to the lovely, kind, helpful staff, all the way to our amazing ocean view room with our own pool. It made it difficult to ever leave our room. Lets talk food. OMG! They deserved their Michelin star and should keep getting one each year for the one-of-a-kind meals that we had. We were treated like we were the only guests at every meal. We celebrated my wife's birthday and will be going back every year to celebrate something (we'll make up a reason if we have to :). If your looking for individualized service (Our butlers, Ari & Gabriel were a 12/10), amazing cuisine, or peaceful tranquility, then look no more. WE LOVE THIS PLACE SO MUCH! Thank you Zadun for a memorable experience and we look forward to seeing you next year."

"65/55 Couple, not "World Travelers", although have traveled the world. With domestic challenges across Mexico precluding any further visits to Puerto, Aca, Cancun, Maya, Veracruz, M-City, and virtually any other previously enjoyed MX destination...that only leaves us Cabo for the long (quick) weekend getaways to the south...and a new home has been found. The Zadun Ritz Reserve property (one of only four such Reserves worldwide) delivers on every conceivable level, exceeding our expectations in all measures. In our case, personal Concierge Miguel was in perpetual communication over 4 days...while the entire staff exhibited flawless technique, unfailing good cheer, and a command of the famous Ritz customer-service playbook worthy of any NFL coach (with kudos to Luis, Mitchel, Ivan, Samuel, Aruelio, Elizabeth, Genesis, and every member of the Team.) The cuisine was superb across all property restaurants, ranging from the toes-in-the-sand beachfront Equis, all the way up to Humo...one of the finest dining experiences on the coastline. There are plenty of exceptional properties along the San Jose to Cabo San Lucas corridor, but we'll never see them again...We're home."
