PB hotel design editorial

Where the Yucatán jungle meets the Caribbean at Playa Mujeres — a private peninsula north of Cancún largely shielded from the hotel-strip churn — Atelier Playa Mujeres makes a case that all-inclusive resort design need not default to institutional scale or synthetic cheerfulness. The property, which opened in 2019, spreads across roughly 600 metres of white-sand coastline, its main tower stepping down toward the water in a series of terrace-fronted floors whose clean white horizontals and deep overhangs draw more from contemporary Mexican residential architecture than from the blunt massing typical of Caribbean mega-resorts. The interior language shifts register depending on where you find yourself. Guest rooms carry exposed timber ceiling beams, polished dark slate floors, warm sapele or parota wood millwork, and jute rugs — a palette grounded in craft materials that keeps the Caribbean light from turning antiseptic. Platform beds sit low against the floor, and the proportions lean residential rather than transactional. The restaurants move in a different direction entirely: the main dining space photographed here deploys harlequin black-and-white marble flooring, fluted stone columns banded in brass, amber-lit coffered ceilings, and curved saddle-leather seating — an Art Deco-inflected richness that reads as deliberate evening counterpoint to the barefoot ease of the beach. Connecting everything is a long lagoon-style infinity pool that threads between palms toward the water, framed by the hotel's tiered facade on one side and the open sea on the other.

"Did inspira suite and spent a lot of time at their Oceanside private pool. Vicente, Jesus and Julio were amazing and took such good care of us. Maria Dolores… hands down one of the best restaurants of my life. Incredible all around. And shout out to Hiram, best butler ever."

"Most of all, my experience with Jahir at El Suspiro was genuinely different than any other server. He was humble, extremely attentive and friendly, and all around, he was down to earth and personable. I would highly recommend specifically requesting him. He will be your friend by the time you leave! Next, the location was super easy to get to, we chose to go by car rental starting from the airport. The atmosphere was peaceful, full of humbleness and care, and the rooms were constantly cleaned and maintained. Room service was easily usable each morning or even late at night and we could even request certain assistances with the room if needed. It could have just been our neighbors, but things were extremely quiet and I believe soundproof, and since it was our honeymoon, we also got extra amenities and care (see photo). If you’re a man wondering if this is the place for your first trip as a married couple, it is well worth the money. Thank you Jahir and Atelier!"

"We had a wonderful 5 night stay at Atelier! I would strongly recommend the Inspira option. The service was impeccable right from the moment we walked in. Carolina and Cesar were our assigned butlers and they did a wonderful job answering our numerous questions and making all the reservations for everything we hoped for. We had high expectations for the food and were not disappointed! Maria Delores was well worth the extra cost and really gave us a culinary tour across Mexico. We also loved eating at Mercado in the morning to start the day off with Mexican flavors. Atelier cycled through different food options at the cafes throughout the day which meant there was always something different when we were looking for a snack. And overall the food was not very heavy, which was crucial for a vacation of eating out every day. We’d love to come back again! This was a amazing trip."

"The resort was amazing. From the minute we walked in we were blown away with the decor and ambiance. The staff was exceptional and very helpful. I must shout out Jonathan (from the Art Studio) he was especially helpful in navigating from Building 3 to Building 1 and giving us recommendations. Our favorite servers in the restaurants were Donovan and David! Not a party resort but great for relaxing or romance."
