PB hotel design editorial

Where the Yucatán jungle meets the Caribbean at Playa Mujeres — a private peninsula north of Cancún largely shielded from the hotel-strip churn — Atelier Playa Mujeres makes a case that all-inclusive resort design need not default to institutional scale or synthetic cheerfulness. The property, which opened in 2019, spreads across roughly 600 metres of white-sand coastline, its main tower stepping down toward the water in a series of terrace-fronted floors whose clean white horizontals and deep overhangs draw more from contemporary Mexican residential architecture than from the blunt massing typical of Caribbean mega-resorts. The interior language shifts register depending on where you find yourself. Guest rooms carry exposed timber ceiling beams, polished dark slate floors, warm sapele or parota wood millwork, and jute rugs — a palette grounded in craft materials that keeps the Caribbean light from turning antiseptic. Platform beds sit low against the floor, and the proportions lean residential rather than transactional. The restaurants move in a different direction entirely: the main dining space photographed here deploys harlequin black-and-white marble flooring, fluted stone columns banded in brass, amber-lit coffered ceilings, and curved saddle-leather seating — an Art Deco-inflected richness that reads as deliberate evening counterpoint to the barefoot ease of the beach. Connecting everything is a long lagoon-style infinity pool that threads between palms toward the water, framed by the hotel's tiered facade on one side and the open sea on the other.

"This was our 3rd week long visit and it gets better every single time. As we were on our Baby Moon we decided to stay our entire time on resort grounds and it did not disappoint. The food is impecable - would highly recommend the surf and turf at Suspiro! Beyone that, the staff is incredible. From our main bartenders - Grissel and Luis - to the activities team keeping the energy alive, we found ourselves wondering how it could get any better. Big shout out to Jonathan, Elian, Marisabel, Andrea, and the many others that kept the energy up and the blood flowing. Well done guys. We can't wait to see you all again!"

"Damarys was the most personable, hospitable and kindest person we have ever interacted with! The resort itself was 10/10 but she made the whole experience 12/10. We will absolutely be back!"

"The hotel is spectacular. Every one of the staff members is top tier. The food is the best I’ve had of the Cancun/isla mujeres resorts I’ve stayed at, and the choices are PLENTY. Initially stayed in a normal room for a night while our upgrade was confirmed and moved to a swim up room. It seems like ALL rooms of this hotel are made to make you feel like you’re in the best one, spacious, thoughtfully designed, gorgeous interior, wide array of amenities. Though these are technically ‘tiered’, really never felt that. Both felt amazing. The thing about the swim up private pool is that it’s adjacent to the other pools, but quite private. So if privacy is what you’re looking for I’d recommend that. Otherwise the action is at one of the main pool areas. Tried the relaxing pool and the main pool where events are, both immaculately maintained and have service at the chairs. The service is GREAT!!!! Best I’ve had at any resort. The only downside for me is that the sea was full of seaweed, which has nothing to do with the hotel, but good to know for future travelers. The water is also a little wavey and not as calm. So keep that in mind. The hotel itself is 10/10 and probably one of the best, if not THE best in Cancun for luxurious, relaxing stay."

"Another 28 days at the amazing Atelier. We visited in March 2026 and experienced service out of this world. The staff go above and beyond to ensure your stay is the most memorable and every day we were treated like royalty. Alonso and Carlos are new to the already outstanding concierge pool team and ensured that every day at the Inspira pool the service was amazing. Alonso made us sand art at the beginning of our stay which was a lovely surprise and after we said to Carlos that we didn’t much like the frozen banana, he took the time to visit El Suspiro to get us an individual bowl of fruit or muesli with yogurt as our extra breakfast treat. Wonderful service from both of them, thank you. It is so lovely to return to Atelier on our 8th visit and to be greeted each day from the wonderful staff. Nothing is ever too much trouble and the energy and enthusiasm from Jhordy every single day just adds to our enjoyment of this resort. Rojas was one of the first staff we spoke to on our first trip to Atelier and he goes out of his way to find us every time we return to welcome us back with his big Rojas hug. Every pool server at the Inspira pool worked so hard all day to make sure our glass was never empty, Gilda, Julio, Christopher and Tomas, sorry we can’t remember you all. Takeshi is one of our favourite restaurants and both Jorge the Manager and Pablo the Head Chef went out of their way to make our dinners extra special every time we dined there. Special appetisers were made especially for us and our friends and never having to ask for a drink all night just adds more to the reasons why we love Atelier so much. The way we are always treated in Takeshi shows us ever time how the Manager Jorge is so passionate about the service and food in his restaurant and how the staff absolutely love working for him. We enjoyed amazing dinners at Los Abrazos with Daniel the restaurant Manager one night cooking our appetiser of pan fried shrimp in sauce, and fried pineapple to finish with, both delicious. We also thoroughly enjoyed the tamarind shrimp cooked for us by Christian the Head Chef, and his beef broth one night was utterly yummy. El Suspiro has such a lovely atmosphere for our seafood dinners with Fernando the Manager always providing outstanding service, with Marco the Head Chef. Our meals at the Italian restaurant Cilento were always a treat when Alexis was our waiter. The Bello Amore cocktails were a delicious start to our evening. Both Alexis and Amy the Manger make the evening enjoyable with their happy cheerful personalities. Big love to all the mixologists at La Calle and El Cielo who all made our evenings fun and we are eternally grateful to Hector for returning back into the Atelier family, we missed you. Every evening was not complete without a visit to the lobby bar, Don Fernando, for our usual Tanqueray 10 & tonic and Grey Goose & coke before dinner. Humberto and Rosalino make a great team preparing these drinks even before we sit down, greeting us with ‘hello Mr Tony’. What great guys. It was lovely that on our last night in Los Abrazos, Diana the Food & Beverage Manager stayed late to wish us a safe journey home and to say goodbye with a hug. What a lovely person who took the time out at the end of her busy long day to make us feel even more extra special. To sum it up, this is the perfect place to take your holiday with our friends at Atelier."
