PB hotel design editorial

Tucked behind a canopy of mature trees on a leafy street in Mexico City's Colonia Roma, a stuccoed early-twentieth-century villa carries the arched openings and symmetrical massing of the neighbourhood's Porfirian heritage while everything behind the facade moves decisively forward in time. Brick Hotel took over this two-storey structure and extended it with a contemporary rear volume, the contrast between the original white render and the new dark-framed glazing making the generational conversation visible rather than concealed. Ferns spill from the upper balustrade, string lights thread through the tree canopy overhead, and the Hela spa signage anchors one side of the entrance stair — all of it suggesting a property more interested in atmosphere than announcement. Inside, the interiors settle into a palette of charcoal grey walls, herringbone oak floors, and brass hardware that runs consistently from guestrooms to bar. Upholstered headboards in pale linen, leather-trimmed nightstands in warm oak, and pendant reading lights with polished metal shades furnish rooms that look outward through floor-to-ceiling louvred windows into the greenery beyond. The restaurant extends that dialogue with the exterior most directly — floor-to-ceiling glazing framed in black steel, a slatted timber ceiling filtering light, laser-cut metal screens dividing the dining room, and Tom Dixon-style cone pendants casting warm gold pools over marble-topped tables. At the bar, a veined marble counter anchored by brass disc pendants and antiqued mirror backsplash completes a vision of contemporary Mexican hospitality that draws quietly on its colonial bones without being constrained by them.

"This is our second stay at the Brick hotel following a solid experience on our first stay. We are incredibly disappointed with our second experience due to how the hotel handled a broken air conditioning unit in our room. First, we’ll share that we appreciated how the staff initially approached us when we inquired about the ac in the room - they were apologetic, non-defensive, and unsurprised that this is an ongoing issue with our particular room (apparently involving a larger fix that required a maintenance team that the hotel can’t fix). It is upsetting that they would place guests in a room that costs almost $900 a night that has a known issue!! Staff (Emilio) said that this was only happening in our room and not in other rooms in the hotel. The room was so warm that we could not sleep at night, which impacted our ability to enjoy the city during the day. They offered us an upgrade to a suite on our last night along with a free transfer to the airport, while ensuring they would discuss with management regarding a refund. They did switch us to an upgraded room (which we did not ask for, we just wanted a room with working air conditioning). The difference in temperature was drastic and made even clearer what a problem our room was having. When it came time to check out, the front desk person appeared “confused” about whether management was going to provide a refund and dismissed our questions. We then got into the “free transfer” to the airport only to have the driver ask us to pay for the bill at the end. We were so confused and said that the hotel had comped this question. When we contract the hotel concierge Miguel, he hung up on my husband, our driver also called him and then told us that the hotel wasn’t going to pay him. We ended up paying our driver since it wasn’t his fault that the hotel did this. When we then reached out to the hotel about this, they said that they will pay the driver (which was not what they said to the driver when we were in the car). So we told them to just take it off our bill but it appears they blocked us on WhatsApp as our message is still unread by them. We are incredibly disappointed and upset by this turn of events and have truly never had an experience like this with a hotel. I would like to stress that the way a staff responds to guests is likely due to management directives so I understand that a lot of things are out of their hands. We had some nice interactions with staff but the way things ended was very tough."

"Hotel Brick is an intimate and welcome oasis in the heart of Mexico City! We enjoyed our stay as the staff, the hospitality, the dining experience were all wonderful. This botique hotel is immaculate, quiet, and private. We especially liked how close and easy it was to get around, the restaurants nearby and walkability, and mostly the wonderful staff there."

"My husband and I spent 5 nights at Brick hotel in late May. We stayed in room 302 which was a Rooftop Suite. We had a lovely 2-story room with a nice 2nd floor terrace (enclosed but you can see the the rooftop bar and trees) and we relaxed in the comfortable lounge chairs there each day. There was a very nice bathtub upstairs that we didn't use. The bathroom had nice amenities and the water pressure in the shower was great. The bed was very comfortable, but not sure if it was a Queen - it may have been a Full or Double. I really appreciated the glass water bottles being refreshed daily and the chocolate that was left for turndown (I took the one with pop rocks in it home to enjoy later!) Rooms were very quiet. On the first night there was a wedding being held and the concierge said that the music would be done at 10:00pm and I thought "No way - it's a wedding, they're going to party all night" - but sure enough, it was literally silent after 10:00pm. We had breakfast everyday at the restaurant in the hotel (which was complementary) and was AMAZING. The service was top notch and so kind. The fruit plate (served to each person) was incredible and made me wish I ate that for breakfast everyday at home - it was such a great, healthy way to start the day. After the first day, we split the breakfast main course for the other four days because the courses were HUGE. The chilaquiles was the highlight (because it was so decadent) but everything we had was great. I had an 80-min massage at the Spa (I believe her name was Griselda?) and it was incredible, perfect pressure, relaxing, lovely room, and fairly priced. I felt great for days afterward. I spent about 5 minutes in the private sauna before the message. They booked me same day which was awesome. I even left my necklace in the pocket of my robe and they were kind enough to search for it after I came back after everything had been sent to be laundered. I left 20% gratuity. We also had drinks several times on the patio - it was at odd times and it wasn't busy, but our servers were attentive and kind. The mixed drinks were also very good, but the wine list was lacking (IMHO). I can get Kim Crawford Chardonnay at home, but I get it if they're catering to non-locals. Also, regarding the location - it could not be better. This is like the upper east side of Mexico. So beautiful, safe, and central to everything. We only ubered to Casa Azul and Masala y Maiz (because it was raining) - everything else was walkable. You get street noise (honking) but it's the city and not disturbing if you've ever lived in a city. There were security guards posted outside at all times (I think because of a past review) but we never felt unsafe at any time. This was our first trip to Mexico City and we will ABSOLUTELY be back - obviously we only touched the surface staying 5 days. I would definitely stay at Brick Hotel again but may ask for a bigger bed. Other than that, it was the perfect place for our trip."
