PB hotel design editorial

Tucked into a late nineteenth-century Porfirian mansion on Calle Tonalá in Roma Norte, one of Mexico City's most architecturally layered neighbourhoods, La Valise is among the smallest serious hotels in the city — just six rooms fitted into a stone-fronted townhouse whose carved baroque doorframe and wrought-iron balconies survive intact from the original construction. The conversion kept the building's bones deliberately visible: wide-plank pine floors worn to a honey patina, deep-set French windows throwing tree-filtered light across rooms furnished more like a well-travelled collector's apartment than a hospitality product. The interior approach layers periods and provenance without apology. Steel-framed four-poster beds sit alongside Acapulco chairs in natural wicker; kilim rugs anchor living spaces where velvet sofas with white-piped trim face rough-hewn wooden chairs of Pre-Columbian sculptural character. Bathrooms push the drama furthest — original plasterwork mouldings painted out in black against white walls, multiplied into near-infinity by floor-to-ceiling mirror panels, with a freestanding clawfoot tub and a Carrara marble vanity as the only concessions to conventional luxury. The rooftop suite dispenses with interior enclosure almost entirely, positioning a low platform bed on an ipe-decked terrace against a charcoal rendered wall hung with copper glyphs and trailing vines — the city skyline visible beyond the plantings. Throughout, the curation carries the sensibility of a boutique that happens to have bedrooms rather than a hotel that happens to have art.

"Highly recommended beautiful hotel in lovely central neighborhood. Our room was so spacious and comfortable (gravity) with a large bright living room, equally large bedroom with a terrace, and a luxury bathroom complete with separate dressing area, freestanding tub and separate luxurious shower. The staff are so personable and helpful and made us feel so well cared for. A special shout out for Erik who went above and beyond, especially in helping me to get an Uber when I had to transport my and my partners’ luggage on my own. The breakfast is expansive and delicious and you can take it in your room or their small café. Overall a perfect boutique hotel experience."

"What a lovely hotel and beautiful neighborhood! This was the perfect location for our first trip to CDMX. The hotel is small but had everything we needed. The staff greets you by name and the rooms are spacious and quiet. We loved Polaris (top floor, just like the website pictures). Note there is a small elevator available. The included breakfast (coffee/tea, fruit, yogurt, granola, croissant, egg dish) set us up well for the day. The small adjacent cafe is also pleasant. Bottled water in the room was plentiful and complimentary. There are so many restaurants, bakeries, cafes, bars, and shops within a short walk! Just book it!"

"La Valise is a small luxury hotel in Roma Norte. There are so many ways in which the hotel exceeded our expectations. The room (Moon) was enormous and well appointed. The bathroom was as large as most hotel rooms with a shower and a bath. It was like having a personal spa in your room. The bed was comfortable. Noise from the bustling Roma Norte area was well masked by window coverings and the unique moon decoration. Service was twice daily to the room and was a delight--the room remained spotless. And the treats were so kind--the staff accommodated my partner's GF needs so nicely. The location is perfect for spending several days in CDMX. You can easily get anywhere and yet are tucked away in a quiet spot. The staff at the front desk were generous and kind--we felt like part of the family there. And the daily breakfast was excellent. Although you can take it in your room, strong recommendation to take it in the cafe. You can sit and absorb the street noise while sipping a cortado and delighting in a croissant and fresh fruit while a sparrow trots in to the cafe looking for crumbs. The hotel is on the expensive side and was a splurge for us. However, it was well worth it, as the experience was five stars all the way."
