JSa Arquitectura's 2023 hotel organizes fifty rooms around a monumental nine-story atrium and ground-floor pool.

Best for: Architecture enthusiasts and collectors in Mexico City

Highlights:

  • U-shaped atrium (Urban Cenote) drops nine stories to ground-floor pool
  • Rooms wrapped in pale oak millwork and exposed concrete
  • Rooftop lap pool cantilevered above Polanco with tropical planting
Brutalist-intimate

PB hotel design editorial

Javier Sánchez and his team at JSa Arquitectura built VOLGA around a single provocative idea: what if a hotel in Polanco's glass-tower corridor organised itself not outward toward the street but inward toward an abyss? The resulting structure, completed in 2023, wraps fifty rooms around a monumental U-shaped void they call the Urban Cenote, an iron-screened atrium that drops from a rooftop skylight all the way to a ground-floor pool of water, pulling daylight down through the building's core. The concrete facade, gridded and glowing amber at dusk, signals none of this from outside — it presents as a quietly severe nine-storey frame, trees already pushing against its edges, before the entrance swallows you into something far stranger. The interiors resolve the brutalist structure with material warmth rather than softening its bones. Rooms are lined in pale oak millwork flush against exposed concrete ceilings, beds set on low timber platforms with uplighting at the base, and every surface calibrated to a palette of lava stone, travertine, and dark Turkish marble. Sculptor Perla Krauze contributes art installations throughout. The ground-floor restaurant Elora unfolds as a tall, plant-saturated room hung with organic resin pendants, its raw stone wall on one side and a double-height glazed screen on the other giving the space a grotto-like density. The rooftop lap pool, cantilevered in board-formed concrete and edged with dense tropical planting, frames tower-lit sky above Polanco in a way that makes the city feel both immediate and entirely elsewhere.

"We had a wonderful 5-night stay at this hotel. From the moment we arrived, the staff made us feel genuinely welcome. Everyone was friendly, professional, and always willing to help. Not everything went perfectly during our stay, but what really stood out was how the team handled every situation. They listened, took our feedback seriously, and were proactive in finding solutions. Their genuine commitment to making our stay as enjoyable as possible made all the difference, and every issue was resolved to our satisfaction. The hotel itself is also a real highlight. It is well located, beautifully designed, with a stylish and aesthetic atmosphere that stands out compared to many other hotels in Mexico City. It feels elegant, calm, and very well maintained. The only small piece of feedback we have is for the beds. As we stayed for five nights, it would have been nice if the bed sheets had been changed at least once during our stay. This is only a minor suggestion and certainly did not take away from our overall experience. Overall, we had a great stay and would happily recommend this hotel to anyone visiting Mexico City. A big thank you to the entire team for their warmth, professionalism, and dedication to making guests feel truly cared for."

"A fantastic experience! The front desk staff reached out well in advance of our stay to insure our stay would be seamless. Which it most certainly was. They arranged transport from the airport to the hotel and maintained communication confirming and reconfirming. Once here the front desk was always cheerful, greeting us every time we passed. They also reached out to see if there was anything they could do to make our stay in Mexico City more comfortable. I want to specifically mention Yare Vania and Juan Dante…Their happy, positive spirit really makes them shine! The physical property is stunning in its design and quality. Very modern and sophisticated, giving you the feeling of being cocooned! Very soothing…can’t wait to return!"
