PB hotel design editorial

Rammed earth walls, reclaimed timber banding, and a garden thick with columnar cacti, agave, and bougainvillea announce Hotel Escondido Oaxaca's governing logic before you step inside: this is a property that treats the landscape and the building as a single continuous material. Tucked into a residential street in Oaxaca's historic centro, the hotel was developed by the same group behind Hotel Escondido Puerto Escondido, and it carries that coastal property's commitment to handmade texture and deliberate slowness into a highland colonial context. The architecture layers two registers — a new rammed-earth and board-formed concrete volume alongside a restored colonial structure whose arched doorways and lime-washed walls survive with their patina deliberately intact. Guest rooms in the newer wing wrap walls and ceilings in pale pine boards left unsealed, the grain warm against green encaustic tile floors; pendant lights on bare cords and woven palm headboards keep the atmosphere closer to a thoughtfully assembled casita than a hotel room. The restaurant sits within the colonial building, its high barrel-vaulted ceiling flaking terracotta plaster, brass wall sconces throwing warm pools of light across long oak tables set with matte black barro negro ceramics — the local Oaxacan pottery tradition given a quietly ceremonial role. A timber-decked plunge pool wrapped by mature trees completes the sense that the property has grown from its site rather than been placed upon it.

About

Escondido Oaxaca is part of Grupo Habita, a collection of hotels whose history, architecture and design provide a unique experience for its clients. Located in Oaxaca, one of the most culturally rich places in Mexico, it represents the cultural roots, uses and customs of this emblematic city. We have recovered the Casona to house the restaurant bar, "Culture Room", a reading and co-working room, the main patio and four rooms. At the back of the Hotel, a contemporary tower has been added with eight more rooms (two with patios and six with balconies). A mix of old and new; honoring the great wealth of Oaxaca: the savoir-faire of its artisans. From architecture to signature crafts, from contemporary design to tradition, more than a Hotel, Escondido Oaxaca is a work of art, oriented to satisfy the experience of each of our guests. We care about every detail of the Hotel, looking for authenticity and balance.

Hotel Escondido Oaxaca Reviews

"We had a lovely stay at Hotel Escondido Oaxaca. The service is outstanding, and the hotel, though small, is designed with beautiful public spaces to relax: with a cup of coffee in the courtyard, take in sun by the rooftop pool, or sip a cocktail at the rooftop bar. The room design is simple and elegant. And the location is perfect, close by the city center and main shopping areas. We could not have been happier with our choice!"

"The Hotel Escondido is a charming boutique hotel (12 rooms) in El Centro in Oaxaca. The staff is very friendly and helpful and the location is great. The breakfast is quite nice and the cafe in which it is served also serves a very good lunch (we did not eat dinner there). There are also a small rooftop bar and pool. Due to the topography in which it is located, our room (numero 1) was a bit odd, although quite comfortable. Part of the room is below street level, so it does not have conventional windows. It makes up for this, however, with a large skylight. In general, the room could use more light, particularly in the bathroom (shaving was a bit of a challenge). All in all, we'd definitely recommend Escondido."

"My husband and I loved this hotel. When you step into the hotel from the busy city, you are suddenly in a peaceful, relaxing oasis. The rooftop terrace is a wonderful place to watch the sunset and enjoy some guacamole and cervezas. The staff was so friendly and helpful."

"The best part of this hotel is the staff. They couldn’t do enough to make us comfortable. They were super helpful with reservations. The hotel has a cool vibe with an awesome design. The location was perfect; we walked everywhere while exploring the city. Downside includes the noisy traffic. Even with earplugs that were provided, it didn’t help especially in the morning. Breakfast was a continental breakfast; there was an additional charge for items such as omelets or cappuccino. There is no place to store clothing. The closet is tiny and there are no drawers. This could easily be remedied. Huaraches are left in the closet for purchase. No slippers. Outlets were minimal and difficult to access. Rooms tend to be dark. Despite the negatives above, we would stay here again."
