PB hotel design editorial

Carved into the mangrove-fringed coastline of Punta Maroma, one of the last undeveloped stretches of the Riviera Maya, the architecture of Etereo makes a deliberate argument against the dominant resort logic of this coastline — the all-inclusive wall, the hermetically sealed compound. Sordo Madaleno Arquitectos designed the low-rise residential blocks in raw board-formed concrete and local limestone, their cantilevered terraces stepping back from the jungle canopy in a massing that allows the surrounding vegetation to read as the primary material. The aerial view confirms how seriously that ambition was pursued: the pool terraces and pavilions sit embedded within dense subtropical scrub, connected to the beach by a long timber boardwalk threading above the mangroves rather than through them. Inside, the interiors — developed with Tara Bernerd & Partners — work a vocabulary of dark-stained tropical hardwoods, handwoven rattan panels, undyed linen, and hand-thrown ceramic vessels that draws from Mexican craft traditions without resorting to folkloric illustration. The most arresting element in the rooms is a sculpted wood partition screen of interlocking leaf-form panels that functions simultaneously as headboard surround and spatial divider, catching light differently throughout the day. The restaurant carries exposed timber beam ceilings over low-slung upholstered banquettes and rattan-screened dining partitions, the shelves behind lined with terracotta amphorae. A circular fire-pit banquette set into the infinity pool deck — limestone-edged, open to the Caribbean horizon — captures the property's essential gesture: domesticity turned resolutely outward.

Etéreo - meaning ethereal, something spiritual and heavenly - invites you to visit and explore the cycle of renewal of that which enriches life: relationships, inspiration, connection to nature, senses, rhythm, and appreciation. Freed from the distractions of modern life, the celestial experience that defines Etéreo stems from Mayan philosophies and is landmarked by three pillars - extraordinary cuisine, breathtaking encounters with nature and beaches, and an Auberge Spa that facilitates rejuvenation in every sense of the word. "We have been fortunate enough to visit the Cancun / Riviera Maya area many times over the years, but this trip was our favorite. Does this resort have beautiful rooms? Yes. Are the pools beautiful? Yes. Is the food incredible? Yes. But, what makes this place special are the people. There is an overall kindness in every staff member, from housekeeping to manager-level employees. You can feel that they are truly happy to have you stay at their resort, and they often go out of their way to make you feel special. I would like to especially thank Oscar - our breakfast waiter, Sara - the manager at breakfast, Gabriel at the beach, Daniel at the pool, and Kevin from room service/special dinner staff. Not to mention the staff who took us by golf cart to dinner at the St. Regis, housekeeping who kept our room beautiful and filled with treats, the pool waiter who brought our lunch order to our room in a thunderous downpour, and the shaman who welcomed us to the resort. There are many options for a trip to the Cancun area - this one is truly special."

"My wife and I booked a 4-night stay in the middle of March and we couldn't be happier. This was our first trip away from our 15-month old and we were looking to simply relax and unwind without the obnoxious noise and crowds of a large property. Etéreo delivered spectacularly. We received a double upgrade to an Ocean View suite w/plunge pool and immediately knew we were in for a treat. The entire staff made us feel like family and the resort was stunning and oh so peaceful. We truly were able to unwind and while the weather wasn't ideal we still enjoyed lounging at the adults only pool relaxing and being pampered (aka drinks filled) by Daniel and Juan Carlos. They are truly special and made us feel like royalty. The on property food is excellent albeit pricey. We didn't get a chance to dine in town but ventured to the St. Regis next door one evening to Toro which was ridiculously expensive and very loud with corporate 6-top retreats. Etéreo's spa is also excellent and staff knowledgable. We were so impressed with our experience we hope we can return for a 6-7 night stay in the near future."
