PB hotel design editorial

Carved from 240 acres of Yucatán jungle, lagoon, and Caribbean beachfront along the Riviera Maya, the Mayakoba estate was conceived as an ecological resort development unlike anything else on the Mexican coast — a place where waterways and mangrove systems were preserved rather than bulldozed. Fairmont Mayakoba, which opened in 2006 as the anchor property of that broader master plan, arranged its 401 guest casitas and suites across low-rise palapas with steep thatched roofs that dissolve into the tree canopy rather than competing with it. The aerial view makes the logic plain: white sand, turquoise water, and palms, with the structures sitting back from the shoreline in a rhythm that preserves the sense of undisturbed coast. The interiors, refreshed in recent years, work through a palette of warm blonde wood, travertine-effect stone floors, linen upholstery, and cane-back occasional chairs — a vocabulary that keeps the rooms feeling closer to a well-appointed hacienda than a resort block. Coffered ceilings with exposed timber beams and slow-turning ceiling fans reinforce the tropical-residential atmosphere, plantation shutters filtering the light much as they would in a colonial Yucatecan house. The open-sided restaurant visible in the images continues the same material thinking outward — dark wood structural frames, woven pendant lights, and natural stone bar fronts giving onto unobstructed sea views — with the lagoon-side infinity pool, clad in local limestone, completing a circuit between jungle, water, and beach.

"This is our 2nd stay at Fairmont Mayakoba. On the first trip (March 2025) we had some concerns as it was our first family trip to Mexico. We had the pleasure of meeting Omar, a Bellman at Fairmont. Immediately upon meeting him, his warm, accommodating, friendly personally put us at ease. He was very knowledgeable about the resort and activities, made us comfortable which set the atmosphere for the rest of the stay, which was amazing. Our kids especially, loved it. Omar helped us with many things and was a great resource that we appreciated very much. Upon check in this time, we specifically requested Omar and were very happy to see him again. Given our great experience with him the first time, it was very nice to work with again. There was a slight miscommunication after check in where we had to go back to the front desk later in the evening but Valeria, and then the next day, Ricardo were very efficient and accommodating in sorting it out from that evening and into the next day. After the correction we were assigned Butlers. Although we preferred to work with Omar based on our prior stay/experience, the Butlers (Luis and Sofia) were very nice, attentive, responsive, timely and were very good to deal with when we needed them. In fact, everyone was very nice to deal with but some people that stood out were Omar (of course), Valeria and Ricardo (front desk), Filipe at Tauro was one of the best waiters we’ve had anywhere. Alex at the water sport stand (rented Seabobs, highly recommend) was also exceptional. The rooms are very well kept and the house keeping staff is very good. The outdoor showers in the rooms are a luxury. All the food in all of the restaurants was very good. We did a family photo shoot as well and I would highly recommend that as well."
