PB hotel design editorial

Carved from jungle that meets the Caribbean at one of the Yucatán Peninsula's last undeveloped stretches of coastline, Maroma has operated as a singular kind of refuge since its founding by American expat José Luis Morales in the 1970s — long before the Riviera Maya became a byword for resort tourism. The property, now part of the Belmond collection and recently reimagined by Mexico City-based designer Paulina Dosal, spreads across 25 acres of protected jungle in low-slung white-plastered structures whose palapa roofs, visible from the air as a scatter of thatched cones above the canopy, keep the architecture in quiet conversation with its surroundings rather than imposing on them. Dosal's renovation deepened the property's Mexican vernacular rather than replacing it. The 72 rooms and suites are grounded in hand-painted encaustic cement tiles — their ochre, chocolate, and ivory geometric patterns drawn from traditional Mexican craft traditions — set against white-washed walls and warm walnut millwork with cane insets. Textile-hung tapestries in bold Rufino Tamayo-influenced graphics anchor the headboards, while turned-wood lamps and mid-century inspired nightstands give each room the feeling of a well-loved house rather than a managed hotel interior. In the restaurant, exposed timber-beam ceilings and woven rattan pendant lights frame a room that opens toward the palms and sea, the curved plaster banquette at its centre tiled in blue-and-white geometric patterns that echo the Talavera tradition.

Maroma, A Belmond Hotel Reviews

"We recently stayed at the resort for our 23rd anniversary and my 50th birthday, and it was truly one of our favorite hotel experiences, and we’ve traveled to many destinations over the years. The resort is beautiful, welcoming, and exceptionally well cared for. From the moment we arrived, we felt relaxed and taken care of. The food was wonderful, the service outstanding, and the entire property felt warm, inviting, and thoughtfully designed. The staff are truly what make this resort extraordinary. Their kindness, professionalism, and genuine warmth made our stay unforgettable. A heartfelt thank‑you to Sergio, Claudia, Mayra, Ricardo, Jocelyn, and Daniel, each of you made our trip so special. The pool and beach service were amazing, and the grounds are gorgeous with lush tropical plants and palm trees everywhere. We loved the three pools, especially the main pool with its excellent service. The food at Casa Mayor was fantastic - being fresh, flavorful, and beautifully prepared. If you’ve been to France, you know what a good croissant tastes like, and the bakery here is outstanding, offering fresh croissants every morning that we looked forward to. The drinks, both alcoholic and non‑alcoholic, were delicious and thoughtfully made. Dining at this resort was a highlight of our stay and truly elevated the entire experience. The only downside to visiting in the summer is the sargassum seaweed, which is common in the region. The resort worked hard every day to clean the beach, with trucks going back and forth to clear as much as possible. While the machinery can take away a bit of the quiet, the amazing staff, wonderful food, and beautiful hotel more than make up for it. Even with a not‑so‑perfect beach during the summer months, the resort is absolutely worth a stay. We plan on returning both in the summer and winter which says a lot about how special this place is. We left feeling relaxed, grateful, and already excited to come back. Thank you again for making our 23rd anniversary and my 50th birthday so memorable. This resort is truly exceptional, and we cannot wait to return with our family next time."

"Our second stay at Maroma, a Belmond Hotel, Riviera Maya, was nothing short of extraordinary. There are beautiful resorts, and then there are places that create a sense of belonging, where every detail, every interaction, and every moment feels thoughtfully curated. Maroma is undoubtedly one of those rare places. From the moment we arrived, the warmth, professionalism, and genuine hospitality of the entire team were remarkable. Our heartfelt gratitude goes to the butlers, front desk and reservations teams, pool and beach attendants, restaurant and bar teams, talented culinary colleagues behind the scenes, and every single person who welcomed us and cared for us throughout our stay. Their attention to detail, authentic smiles, and effortless service transformed an already beautiful setting into an unforgettable experience. Following its magnificent renovation, Maroma has reached an entirely new level of sophistication. The architecture, design, textures, colors, cuisine, service, and connection to the Riviera Maya come together beautifully. Yet, what truly distinguishes this property is its people. They understand that genuine luxury is not simply about beautiful surroundings—it is about how a guest feels. For us, Maroma represents the very essence of modern Mexican luxury: elegant without being pretentious, refined yet deeply connected to its destination, and exceptional in every sense. We were so captivated by our experience that we have already booked our return for next year—and this time, we will be bringing more of our family to share in the magic of this extraordinary place. Congratulations to the entire Maroma team. You have created something truly special and continue to demonstrate that the highest level of luxury is ultimately defined by heartfelt hospitality. Thank you for making us feel so welcome, cared for, and inspired. We leave with beautiful memories and tremendous gratitude. Until next year, Maroma. We cannot wait to return."
