PB hotel design editorial

Three stepped limestone volumes rising from 620 acres of Yucatan mangrove reserve — the geometry here is not accidental. Edmonds International principal Michael Edmonds conceived the architecture of The Riviera Maya EDITION at Kanai, which opened in 2024, as a contemporary echo of ancient Mayan pyramids, their sloping facades catching the light differently at each hour while grounding a property that could easily have felt airlifted from nowhere. The masterplan traces back to Richard Meier, and that lineage shows in the disciplined site logic, even as the warm limestone softens any tendency toward austerity. The 182 rooms and suites are calibrated to dissolve the boundary between interior and exterior: bleached-oak four-poster frames, large-format limestone floors, and floor-to-ceiling glass that frames the coastal scrubland before the Caribbean comes into view beyond. Ian Schrager's company collaborated with Rockwell Group on the interiors, and the pairing produces a characteristic tension between restraint and theater. The guestrooms lean toward the former — warm sand tones, vertical wood slat panels, teak terrace furniture with the unhurried posture of mid-century Mexican craft. The bar is pure theater: a floor-to-ceiling grid of backlit oak shelving lined with pre-Columbian ceramic vessels, red velvet stools anchoring a counter beneath the collection, the whole room carrying the atmosphere of an anthropological cabinet reimagined for cocktail hour. Outside, a long reflecting pool stretches toward a teak deck and a palm-lined passage to the beach, color punctuated by ceramic planters in saturated yellow and cobalt.

"We went here for my birthday and from the start, it was an excellent and memorable trip with top tier service. The hotel really assisted me in celebrating my birthday, it was so excellent that we plan to return next year! The hotel crew were incredibly attentive, and did everything in their power to meet our needs and take care of us during our stay. Marco at the Sol Beach Club was our server for our last day and his suggestions and attentive service helped make our last day a relaxing one. Anything from helping us choose food while at the pool to helping us decide which drinks to get and giving us sauce/food recommendations. Me and my husband also spent a lot of time at the Lobby Bar where we were serviced numerous times by the bartender Manuel. His suggestions on drinks and knowledge of the property allowed for great conversation and made us continuously return to the Lobby Bar for nightly drinks. The hotel itself was also extremely beautiful, clean, and well kept, you could tell that the workers really put their heart and soul into making sure every portion of the property is cared for and presentable. Room service was also great, the food came warm and within a reasonable time, the menu options were also very reasonable in price. We went during late July, which is their off season, so it wasn’t crowded or anything, some times we would walk around the resort and barely see anyone. Felt like we had it all to ourselves sometimes. We even rented a private cabana on the pier for the day and had the entire pier to ourselves, which obviously made the experience even better."

"We came here for a girls trip and had a fantastic time. There’s 11 of us, so I’m sure it can be a lot especially for the servers. At the beach club, Daniel, Derrick, and Brian were fantastic. Marco was specifically very attentive to our group and accommodated us above and beyond. The rooms are beautiful and spacious. The property is filled with lush plants throughout. At the pool pavilion, the fish tacos and coconut shrimp are must haves. Overall, our stay here exceeded my expectations. The customer service was lovely!"

"One of the best places I’ve ever stayed it was luxury through and through. From the second you stepped out the car to the second you checked out it was absolutely incredible. Food was incredible drinks and cocktails were some of the best I’ve had and it was so relaxing. I have a very stressful job so this was my one chance this year to get away and relax and they really came through. HUGE shoutout to the pool attendants btw they were some of the most hard working people I’ve ever seen and kindest people I’ve ever met just wow all around!!"
