PB hotel design editorial

Carved from a hundred-acre stretch of Mayan coastline, the Waldorf Astoria Riviera Maya arrived in November 2022 as one of the more considered resort commissions on this well-trafficked shore. SB Architects shaped the building's form and façade patterning in direct conversation with the landscape — undulating lines that echo the movement of water and the soft geometry of local sand dunes, giving the low-rise wings a sense of emergence rather than imposition against that expanse of Caribbean blue. Inside, Hirsch Bedner Associates brought their San Francisco studio's precision to 173 rooms finished in palissandro stone and pale bleached oak, the material palette hovering between European grand-hotel gravity and something altogether more coastal and luminous. Pearlescent inlays catch the light differently at every hour, and the signature Waldorf Astoria Clock — here rendered in marble and mother of pearl with Mayan symbol accents — anchors the lobby as both brand artifact and genuine site-specific object. The guest rooms carry that same calibration: grey veined marble floors, textured headwall panels in muted silver-grey weave, globe pendants on articulated arms, and wraparound balconies that keep the Caribbean perpetually in frame. At the open-air restaurant, woven rattan pendants hang beneath a louvred timber ceiling while the infinity pool dissolves the boundary between the terrace and the sea beyond — the whole property resolved around a single organizing idea: let the horizon do the work.

"The hotel itself was very nice. The employees were even more impressive! Two in particular that need recognition are Karla that works in restaurant. She was so nice to us and others definitely a people person! Jorge Cumi from Bell team was outstanding as well! We will definitely return."

"From the moment we arrived at the Waldorf Astoria Riviera Maya, it was clear that this was not just a stay… it was an experience curated with intention, excellence, and heart. Let me start at the top. Leadership matters. And under the extraordinary guidance of General Manager Nazaret Carbonari, it shows in every single detail. There is a reason she is consistently regarded as one of the very best in the business. Excellence flows from the top, and her standard is unmistakable. And then… the people. Ana Salazar, Guest Experience Manager, set the tone for what can only be described as a flawless stay. Every detail was anticipated. Every request handled with grace. Every moment intentional. Patricia from the concierge team went above and beyond in a way that truly touched our hearts. Walking into a suite beautifully decorated with birthday and anniversary love was not just a surprise… it was a moment. She, along with her colleague Caesar, made sure that every single day felt special, personal, and unforgettable. Brando and his pool and beach team? They redefined “fun in the sun.” Their energy, attentiveness, and impeccable service elevated every moment by the water into something truly extraordinary. And the food… oh, the food. Breakfast at Chaya was decadent, abundant, and beautifully presented each morning. Lunch at Ja’o delivered what I will confidently call the best grilled fish tacos in the world. And dinner at the open-flame seafood restaurant Malpeque? An absolute showstopper. The fresh catch of the day, expertly prepared over open fire as we dined beside the largest fire pit I’ve ever seen, was an experience all its own. And that homemade habanero sauce? 🔥 I savored every single flame. But what truly makes this property shine is the consistency. The housekeepers, the servers, and every behind-the-scenes team member continue to uphold the unmistakable standard of Waldorf Astoria luxury. Warm. Polished. Effortless. This was more than a birthday and anniversary celebration. It was a reminder of what hospitality looks like when it is done right. We arrived as guests. We left feeling celebrated. And when excellence meets intention at this level… it doesn’t just impress you, it stays with you."

"This is a beautiful resort on a gorgeous piece of property with excellent service. The grounds are exquisitely maintained and the staff is super friendly and professional. The spa is lovely and if you go definitely ask for Arturo! I got a marvelous skin treatment from him. The food options at the WA are wonderful. There is both fine and informal dining! The menu options are vast and again the service is amazing. Rafael is a great bartender. Definitely spend some time lounging at one of the spectacular pools and hopefully you will have Esteban as your pool server. Everyone we came into contact with at the WA was very friendly and had terrific suggestions for other activities etc… The one and only one drawback to this place is that the beach is not great there. But what the beach lacks is made up for by the idyllic pools and facilities"

"We had a lovely experience at the Waldorf Astoria Riviera Maya. The hotel itself is beautiful, peaceful and serene. The rooms are very spacious and comfortable. We enjoyed all of our meals and found the food to be delicious. We stayed for 6 nights and never left the resort for a meal. The variety was enough for us on site. We especially enjoyed the buffet breakfast, Jao and the fantastic guacamole poolside each day! I would like to thank Sebastian and Jysel for their wonderful service, big smiles and kindness by the pool each day. They were not only attentive, but amazing people who we enjoyed getting to know better during our stay. I truly found the people who work at the Waldorf to be the best part. One thing to note is that although this resort is on the water and the views are incredible, the beach is not great for swimming. The pool decks are very comfortable though and we enjoyed relaxing and looking out at the water and listening to the waves crash. We were able to do some walking on the beach. We enjoyed it and would return!"
