PB hotel design editorial

Carved from a hundred-acre stretch of Mayan coastline, the Waldorf Astoria Riviera Maya arrived in November 2022 as one of the more considered resort commissions on this well-trafficked shore. SB Architects shaped the building's form and façade patterning in direct conversation with the landscape — undulating lines that echo the movement of water and the soft geometry of local sand dunes, giving the low-rise wings a sense of emergence rather than imposition against that expanse of Caribbean blue. Inside, Hirsch Bedner Associates brought their San Francisco studio's precision to 173 rooms finished in palissandro stone and pale bleached oak, the material palette hovering between European grand-hotel gravity and something altogether more coastal and luminous. Pearlescent inlays catch the light differently at every hour, and the signature Waldorf Astoria Clock — here rendered in marble and mother of pearl with Mayan symbol accents — anchors the lobby as both brand artifact and genuine site-specific object. The guest rooms carry that same calibration: grey veined marble floors, textured headwall panels in muted silver-grey weave, globe pendants on articulated arms, and wraparound balconies that keep the Caribbean perpetually in frame. At the open-air restaurant, woven rattan pendants hang beneath a louvred timber ceiling while the infinity pool dissolves the boundary between the terrace and the sea beyond — the whole property resolved around a single organizing idea: let the horizon do the work.

Waldorf Astoria Cancun Reviews

"I rarely make the effort to leave a negative review, but this experience was serious enough that I felt I had to share it. Our stay was extremely disappointing due to two serious incidents and the hotel’s inadequate response. First, the water was suddenly shut off while we were in the middle of taking a shower, causing significant inconvenience. Even more concerning, we became trapped inside an elevator. Being locked in an elevator was frightening and extremely stressful for us. What made the experience worse was how the hotel handled these incidents afterward. Staff largely blamed external causes, apologized, and simply told us that it would not happen again. Hotel manager Maria Jose also failed to provide any meaningful resolution beyond those explanations and assurances. That response did very little for guests who had already experienced the disruption, fear, and distress. There was no meaningful effort to address the inconvenience or make things right. We understand that unexpected problems can happen, but how a hotel responds to serious incidents matters just as much as the incidents themselves. Given the water interruption, the elevator incident, and the inadequate response afterward, this stay fell far below what we expected from a hotel of this level."

"We had an amazing time at Waldorf Astoria in Rivera Maya. A well kept and beautiful resort and friendly staff. A special shout out to Benjamin at Chaya, Evan & Victor at Ja’O, Orlando at Malpeque, Gabriella at the spa, and Esperanza & Cinthia with the activities. They all made our experience more enjoyable. We hope to come back again!"

"Excellent service, friendly staff, very clean facility. Fun activities to do with your kid. We did the art class and paper mache class with Esperanza. She was great, fun to do art and to make your own souvenir to bring back home!"
