PB hotel design editorial

Carved from a hundred-acre stretch of Mayan coastline, the Waldorf Astoria Riviera Maya arrived in November 2022 as one of the more considered resort commissions on this well-trafficked shore. SB Architects shaped the building's form and façade patterning in direct conversation with the landscape — undulating lines that echo the movement of water and the soft geometry of local sand dunes, giving the low-rise wings a sense of emergence rather than imposition against that expanse of Caribbean blue. Inside, Hirsch Bedner Associates brought their San Francisco studio's precision to 173 rooms finished in palissandro stone and pale bleached oak, the material palette hovering between European grand-hotel gravity and something altogether more coastal and luminous. Pearlescent inlays catch the light differently at every hour, and the signature Waldorf Astoria Clock — here rendered in marble and mother of pearl with Mayan symbol accents — anchors the lobby as both brand artifact and genuine site-specific object. The guest rooms carry that same calibration: grey veined marble floors, textured headwall panels in muted silver-grey weave, globe pendants on articulated arms, and wraparound balconies that keep the Caribbean perpetually in frame. At the open-air restaurant, woven rattan pendants hang beneath a louvred timber ceiling while the infinity pool dissolves the boundary between the terrace and the sea beyond — the whole property resolved around a single organizing idea: let the horizon do the work.

"We spent a very relaxing spring break at the Waldorf in Riviera Maya. It is a far cry from the crowded and loud all-inclusive resorts people associate with Cancun. The rooms were well furnished, the pool and beach were quiet and the service was fantastic. We enjoyed cocktails each evening at the Peacock Alley bar where Aziel and Emmanuel provided great service and made some of the best craft cocktails we’ve ever had. They were willing to make new drinks from their impressive collection of liquor and provided recommendations for food and activities in the area. Aziel, in particular, made our stay memorable and enjoyable. Gracias!"

"This is easily one of the best Waldorf Astoria properties I’ve experienced—possibly the best, and I’ve seen quite a few. From the moment you turn in off the main road, the entire property feels stunning and thoughtfully designed. The lobby alone is absolutely gorgeous, and the service is truly unmatched. Malka restaurant stood out with some of the freshest seafood I’ve had, paired with excellent service. Honestly, the level of service across the entire property was consistently top-tier. I also spent time at the spa and experienced the Haruki ritual—body scrub, body wrap, an unreal massage, and a facial to finish. My skin has never looked better. As a Diamond member, we were upgraded complimentary to an ocean view room, received 15% off spa services, and breakfast was include, hard to beat perks like that. This is definitely a place I’d come back to."

"Hotel is like new, clean, modern, staff makes it worth the visit- know you by name quickly, food is great, excellent activities by the pool for kids and adults throughout the day which keep you busy. Must try the pool workouts by Brandon, he is great- super addition at no extra cost- and Esperanza and Cinthia do great crafts with the kids an adults- bracelets, pottery, so on! Unexpected treat! My only big issue was that we arrived to a very different beach than we thought we were getting- couldn’t even take a walk- yet no mention in other reviews- full of seaweed - and when it wasn’t full of seaweed- just small beach with high tide impossible to play or walk on don’t even think about swimming/ this isn’t a resort to come to for the water- it is a pool and restaurant resort if that’s your thing. At least staff and service make up for it!!"

"The Waldorf HOTEL is great. The rooms are large spacious new well kept, very thoughtful with welcome ceremony and drinks. Good food with the exception of maloeque. The layout is great the kids club and adult activities are the best out of all the five star resorts we have been. BUT unfortunately the beach is sadly the worst beach we have ever been to. The seaweed situation is an issue most of the year. The water is brown and murky. Before h booked I called and asked they made it sound like it was not a big deal that they clean the beach everyday. This seaweed issue is not an issue they can win at. Everyone except one person was angry and tried to leave. As did we. If going in the ocean and being in the beach is important to you this is not for you. The pools are great though."
