PB hotel design editorial

Carved from a hundred-acre stretch of Mayan coastline, the Waldorf Astoria Riviera Maya arrived in November 2022 as one of the more considered resort commissions on this well-trafficked shore. SB Architects shaped the building's form and façade patterning in direct conversation with the landscape — undulating lines that echo the movement of water and the soft geometry of local sand dunes, giving the low-rise wings a sense of emergence rather than imposition against that expanse of Caribbean blue. Inside, Hirsch Bedner Associates brought their San Francisco studio's precision to 173 rooms finished in palissandro stone and pale bleached oak, the material palette hovering between European grand-hotel gravity and something altogether more coastal and luminous. Pearlescent inlays catch the light differently at every hour, and the signature Waldorf Astoria Clock — here rendered in marble and mother of pearl with Mayan symbol accents — anchors the lobby as both brand artifact and genuine site-specific object. The guest rooms carry that same calibration: grey veined marble floors, textured headwall panels in muted silver-grey weave, globe pendants on articulated arms, and wraparound balconies that keep the Caribbean perpetually in frame. At the open-air restaurant, woven rattan pendants hang beneath a louvred timber ceiling while the infinity pool dissolves the boundary between the terrace and the sea beyond — the whole property resolved around a single organizing idea: let the horizon do the work.

"Perfect location for a vacation in Cancun - away from the noisy hotel zone yet close enough to most things to do! Resort itself is amazing - higher floor oceanfront suites have really nice view of the sunrise and the ocean in general. Staff were all super nice. Thanks to Brie for helping us with reservations and activities."

"Esperanza and Cinthia were so amazing with their creative art activities. They taught up to paint canvas tote bags, braid traditional bracelets, and craft/paint handmade paper animals. They were warm and welcoming as they hosted outdoor art events by the pool and ocean side."

"Hotel is spectacular, beautiful and most of all service is impeccable at every part of the hotel. If you are looking for a spot in the riviera maya and looking for a luxurious and classic hotel with most attentive staff this is a property not to be missed. From the moment we arrived, one of the concierge/guest service representative Elena explained everything and whisked us up to the room. Elena walked us through the hotel facility highlighting restaurant options, spa, store, etc. It was unexpected to get such direct and intimate welcome from the front-desk/concierge staff, spending all this time with you one-on-one. Hotel room was luxurious, beautifully designed and met every need. Daily cleaning replenishes everything and makes the room incredibly welcoming back as if you just walked in for the very first time. Nightly turn-down service not missed and beautiful notes from Kayme. We were upgraded to a suite on the top floor which was amazing. Food was excellent everywhere; breakfast options are extensive. We had breakfast and lunches at Chaya and dinners at JA’Os. Servers were excellent and extremely attentive, nothing was missed and food fresh and beautifully presented. I used the spa to get hair done in last minute, day before called to make arrangement as I was attending a wedding in Cancun. No problem. In addition, in last minute the hotel addressed a dress that needed professional steaming. Usually the hotel requires 4 hrs notice but we arrived in late afternoon and within less than 2 hrs the dress was brought up back to my room. Location - The hotel is in a location which was ideal for us. Outside the cancun hotel zone, but not too far, only ~ 20 minutes drive from airport or down-town cancun. You are also 15-20 minutes drive from Puerto Morelos, lovely Mexican town and only 45 minutes drive from Playa Del-Carmen, a larger town. We went to both towns for lunch and enjoyed, highly recommend. Not to forget the car valet/bell men service. From the moment we arrived and throughout our stay provided excellent service. Our rental car was always immediately made available with cold water bottles and helpful providing direction reassuring where we were heading. Night before our departure, proactively asked when to get our luggage, and right on punctual the following day knock on door to pick up the luggage. And before we drive away, having us look over all the luggage/bags to be sure nothing missed. I really appreciate those extra touches, because we have forgotten luggage before and this sets them apart. We only stayed for 4 nights as we came to Cancun for a wedding, which made it necessary for us to stay in Cancun at another hotel the 1st 3 days. I would of wished we had more time at the Waldorf, as it was just so peaceful and beautiful and at a different category of hotel. I recommend a full week’s stay to truly enjoy. In summary, this is one of those places where the staff goes above and beyond, all of them, and exceeded all our expectations and more. We recognize the hard work involved and are thankful. I’d like to recognize the following, likely missing some, so apologize: Antonio & Manuel - car valet and bell men Breakfast/Lunch- Benjamin, Miguel, and Javier Front-Desk/Concierge – Elena and Brizeida, Dafne and many others. Housekeeping - Kayme Roa"

"I absolutely loved staying at Waldorf Astoria RM: it felt like heaven. There isn’t enough words to describe how beautiful and pristine the property is. More importantly everyone from the staff was welcoming and beyond thoughtful. I was especially thankful for Ale, Cinthia and Esperanza who are in charge of healthy corner where they hold activities for kids and adults. It was a perfect place to connect with other guest and for kids to make friends. That was a place my family felt the most home away from home :)"
