PB hotel design editorial

Scattered across seven colonial mansions in the UNESCO-listed centro histórico of San Miguel de Allende, Casa de Sierra Nevada has operated as a hotel since 1580 in buildings that predate Mexican independence by more than two centuries. The property — now part of the Belmond collection — draws its architectural identity from the pink cantera stone arcades, rough-hewn volcanic masonry walls, and deeply shadowed portales that define the Bajío's Spanish colonial building tradition. Bougainvillea cascades over wrought-iron balustrades, stone fountain basins anchor the planted courtyards, and a pool terrace framed by centuries-old cypresses and a shell-niche water feature carries the atmosphere of a private hacienda rather than any kind of managed hospitality. The interiors bring that same unhurried conviction indoors. Rooms are furnished with hand-forged iron four-poster beds, talavera-tiled lamp bases, inlaid bone-and-wood chests, and curtains in indigo ikat weaves that trace their lineage to Oaxacan textile traditions. Carved stone fireplaces and terracotta tile floors ground the spaces historically, while paintings — a Frida Kahlo portrait visible in one suite — establish a thread of Mexican cultural identity running through the curation. In the library-style rooms, dark mesquite joinery surrounds deeply carved headboards and shelves lined with antiquarian volumes, iron chandeliers casting the kind of warm, amber light that makes every hour in San Miguel feel like late afternoon.

Casa de Sierra Nevada, A Belmond Hotel Reviews

"We stayed four nights in late April and had a wonderful time. From greeting through till departure, this really was a warm, luxury experience. The room (#484) was well appointed with all the modern amenities while retaining beautiful historic architectural details; we liked that it was in a casa just a few steps from both the main reception building and the pool/Tunki building, because it was especially quiet. The pool was beautiful and generally peaceful in late morning--sometimes by mid-afternoon, all of the loungers were taken, but staff were helpful in accommodating everyone. They also provided fantastic service poolside, including offering up free snacks and popsicles on a particularly hot day, in addition to a menu of food and drinks. All of our encounters with staff were what made the stay special (and preferable to another 'luxury' hotel we stayed at in town later in the week). The breakfast crew in the Andanza restaurant paid careful attention to detail, learning our names and preferences immediately. In particular, Israel took great care of us at breakfast, and we loved chatting with Jesse, who recommended we visit Restaurante del Parque (the more "traditional/regional Mexican" restaurant at the Belmond's other building a few blocks away); we did just that on our last night in town (several days after we'd checked out of Casa de Sierra Nevada), and Jesse -- who happened to be working there that night -- remembered us by name and gave us a splendid, memorable dinner experience. We also really enjoyed talking with a bartender at Blue Bar about the unique spirits distilled in different regions of Mexico. The housekeeping team was always friendly and did a great job. And from beginning to end, bellhop Jorge looked out for us and made our logistics run seamlessly."

"Wow what a special place that we will never forget! A few star employees for us that really made our stay special, Paula from concierge was an absolute delight to deal with, the dinner recommendation in our last night was an absolute highlight for us! Actually everything she helped us with was incredible :) as well as Octavio (hope that’s right, golden keys concierge gentleman), nothing was too much despite our many questions. The wine farm recommendations were just perfection, we have done may wine tastings before but tres raices really stood out as one of the best, especially our host Marco, we are so grateful for the recommendation and the experience. Oscar hosted us for the margarita class and he was super, it was really great to learn more about him and we now can surely make the best margaritas ! And of course the breakfast and pool team were really very friendly and made us feel at home. The room was incredible and nothing I ever expected to experience in my life, we have beautiful memories from your special city- thank you from the bottom of out hearts."

"We had a really wonderful stay at Casa de Sierra Nevada, A Belmond Hotel, and it’s one of those places you remember for all the right reasons. The hotel is beautiful, full of character, luxurious but still very natural and relaxed. It has that special kind of slow luxury where nothing feels too much, just thoughtful, warm, and very well done. What stood out most to us was how looked after we felt during the whole stay. Everyone made us feel welcome, comfortable, and truly cared for in a very genuine way. The breakfast at Andanza was honestly one of our favorite parts of the day, everything fresh and really well prepared, and such a lovely way to start the morning. Tunki was also a highlight. The food was excellent, A really great restaurant. We also loved the meditation class, which was such a nice touch and added to the peaceful feeling of the whole property. A special thank you to some of the amazing team members who made our stay even better: Ana Ramirez Lara, Alejandro van Oordt, Ximena Malagon, and Fernando Carrasco at reception; Mauricio, Elazar, and Amir at Tunki; Angeles Martinez and Maciel at Andanza; and Magali and Elisabeth in housekeeping. Everyone was kind, attentive, and made a real difference. You can also feel that this level of care comes from great leadership, so special mention as well to Michael Nather, the GM, for what is clearly a very well-led team. A really special place in San Miguel de Allende. Warm, elegant, peaceful and full of soul. We would happily come back."
