PB hotel design editorial

Behind an unassuming white facade on a cobblestone street in San Miguel de Allende's Zona Centro, carved cantera stone door surrounds and heavy mesquite timber doors signal what lies within: a colonial casona of considerable age, converted into the intimate boutique hotel La Valise San Miguel de Allende. The building's courtyard structure — gravel-laid patio, a slender lap pool set into stone steps, a mature citrus tree casting afternoon shade — follows the logic of the colonial house rather than reimagining it, with a covered colonnade running along one flank supported on turned stone columns and dark-stained timber vigas. The interiors work a careful balance between the building's pre-colonial and colonial ornamental vocabulary and a considered contemporary edit. Guest rooms display intricate white plasterwork friezes — pre-Hispanic geometric and figurative motifs carved directly into the stucco walls — alongside barrel-vaulted and flat brick ceilings, exposed dark wood beam ceilings, and original canteras flagstone floors. Furniture draws from several traditions at once: carved mesquite side tables with nailhead detail, copper-framed Acapulco chairs, iron candlestands of distinctly colonial craft, and green-upholstered platform beds in a tone that anchors the pale plaster without fighting it. Striped Oaxacan textiles and Persian-influenced rugs ground the rooms further, and the entrance hall — framed by ornately carved wooden doors and an arched cantera passage — sets the register for a property that treats Mexico's layered material culture as something to be inhabited rather than illustrated.

La Valise San Miguel de Allende Reviews

"My wife and I spent two nights at La Valise San Miguel de Allende celebrating our anniversary, and we couldn't have asked for a better experience. We split our time between Mexico and the US, and while this was my first visit to San Miguel, my wife had been many times and always spoke about its beauty. Now I understand why. The hotel is on Jesús Street, just a three-minute walk to the Parroquia de San Miguel Arcángel and the Jardín Principal. There are countless great restaurants, cafés, galleries, and shops within easy walking distance, which made exploring the city effortless. From the moment we arrived, the staff was incredibly friendly, attentive, and genuinely welcoming. Our room was beautiful, comfortable, and thoughtfully appointed, and we loved the little extras, like breakfast each morning, drinks, minibar, and valet parking all included. We didn't end up using the pool or hot tub, but they offer to warm either up with just a few hours' notice, which was a nice touch. The in-room Bluetooth speaker was also a fun bonus that made the stay feel a bit more personal. As for downsides, they were minor. There's no on-site parking due to its historic center location, but the valet makes it seamless. And before our stay, I had trouble reaching the hotel by phone and had to go through the main reservations office in the US. But once connected, communication with the staff was excellent. Overall, the service, location, and thoughtful details made for a truly memorable anniversary. We'd gladly stay again and recommend it to anyone looking for a special stay in the heart of San Miguel."

"La Valise de San Miguel is a beautiful hotel. The rooms are lovely and spacious, and the outdoor area, including the central patio is gorgeous. The staff at the hotel are very gracious, helpful, kind, and professional. They go out of their way to provide exceptional service. The housekeeping staff did a great job cleaning my room everyday and providing turndown service. Staying at this hotel for nearly a week was a wonderful experience! I highly recommend it!"
