PB hotel design editorial

Behind an unassuming white facade on a cobblestone street in San Miguel de Allende's Zona Centro, carved cantera stone door surrounds and heavy mesquite timber doors signal what lies within: a colonial casona of considerable age, converted into the intimate boutique hotel La Valise San Miguel de Allende. The building's courtyard structure — gravel-laid patio, a slender lap pool set into stone steps, a mature citrus tree casting afternoon shade — follows the logic of the colonial house rather than reimagining it, with a covered colonnade running along one flank supported on turned stone columns and dark-stained timber vigas. The interiors work a careful balance between the building's pre-colonial and colonial ornamental vocabulary and a considered contemporary edit. Guest rooms display intricate white plasterwork friezes — pre-Hispanic geometric and figurative motifs carved directly into the stucco walls — alongside barrel-vaulted and flat brick ceilings, exposed dark wood beam ceilings, and original canteras flagstone floors. Furniture draws from several traditions at once: carved mesquite side tables with nailhead detail, copper-framed Acapulco chairs, iron candlestands of distinctly colonial craft, and green-upholstered platform beds in a tone that anchors the pale plaster without fighting it. Striped Oaxacan textiles and Persian-influenced rugs ground the rooms further, and the entrance hall — framed by ornately carved wooden doors and an arched cantera passage — sets the register for a property that treats Mexico's layered material culture as something to be inhabited rather than illustrated.

"The small luxury hotel has beautiful courtyard, spacious, tranquil, and elegant rooms! The service from the concierge team is absolutely superb. For example, when our Uber driver dropped us off at the wrong intersection, Mi from the concierge team tracked us down just a block away and guided us safely to the property. The next morning, we enjoyed a healthy and delicious breakfast. Luis shared the enchanting history of the hotel with us and gave excellent recommendations for sightseeing and dining. When we mentioned that we needed to check out at 7:00 AM the following day, Luis didn't hesitate to arrange a wonderful takeaway breakfast for us. Highly recommended!"

"The staff at this small yet luxurious boutique property is top notch. Luis, Mireya, Areli y Nicolas made sure we had everything we needed and made my husband’s birthday celebration very special. With only 7 or 8 rooms, all unique in their design, enjoying the amenities such as the terrace and hot tub was a pleasure and a private experience. We stayed at the Ollin room, which has an amazing spa bathroom with soaking tub and double sinks. The bedroom was spacious with high ceilings and overlooked the courtyard. We were able to enjoy an in room couples massage and sip on small batch mezcal while listening to music. We will definite back😊"

"This place is truly a hidden gem in the heart of the city. What makes it even more special is the incredible service and the amazing team who make you feel genuinely cared for and welcomed. Luis, Nico, Viri, Pato, Marthita, Mireya, and Angie were all absolutely wonderful and made our stay unforgettable. The rooms are very spacious, beautifully designed, and filled with authentic details that reflect so much thought and care. The chilaquiles are simply incredible. The location is another one of its greatest highlights. It is situated on a charming pedestrian street, which makes it peaceful and free from traffic, while still being only one block away from the beautiful San Miguel parish and the city center. Without a doubt, one of the best places to stay in San Miguel de Allende."

"I would rate La Valise as nothing but excellent in all categories. We just returned from a four night visit and our family booked four of the six rooms at the boutique hotel and felt like we were house guests in this beautiful villa. The staff at the hotel were all very helpful and friendly and knew everyone in our party by name. Nico, Luis and Mariana took care of our every need. The design, comfort, decor and location cannot be beat and you can walk everywhere with no need to take a taxi. We look forward to visiting again!"
