PB hotel design editorial

Carved from a colonial hacienda on the hillside above San Miguel de Allende's historic centro, the property that became Rosewood San Miguel de Allende was conceived to feel less like a hotel than a private estate that has simply always existed here. The terracotta-washed facades, arched arcades stacked across three levels, and the central courtyard — planted with Italian cypress, olive trees, and lavender along a stone-paved rill — draw from the same Baroque and Andalusian currents that shaped the city's UNESCO-listed streetscape in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Inside the 67 rooms and suites, dark-stained exposed ceiling beams meet wide-plank hardwood floors and spirally turned four-poster beds in carved walnut, the furniture vocabulary firmly rooted in New Spain colonial craft traditions. Geometric wool rugs in Otomí-inflected patterns anchor the rooms, while cantera stone surrounds frame wood-burning fireplaces — a practical amenity at this highland altitude, where evenings turn cool year-round. Arched iron-framed doors open onto balconies where bougainvillea spills over terracotta parapets. The rooftop Luna Rooftop Tapas Bar, furnished with woven cushions, pierced-metal lanterns, and billowing canvas shade structures, delivers an unobstructed panorama across the city's colonial roofline to the neo-Gothic spires of the Parroquia de San Miguel Arcángel — the most effective argument for the property's position on the hillside that any designer could have devised.

"Wonderful sunset experience with delicious, but expensive snacks. Cocktails somewhat stingy on alcohol content in Bloody Marys and Margaritas and they charge to top up drink so that one can taste the alcohol"

"Spectacular experience for a birthday celebration! Our stay was most memorable, as our suite overlooked the cathedral and the beautiful town of San Miguel de Allende. If you're planning on a trip, this property is the place to stay! Do not hesitate to dine at Pirules - the food was unbelievable. The rooftop bar is special too with phenomenal views."

"This is a beautiful hotel. However, a basic requirement is totally ignored by the pool management. They refuse to supply more umbrellas. San Miguel is at 7000 feet with very direct sun, Guests can't get umbrellas and the cabanas are fully booked each day. How is this OK when the room rates are $800 per night? The staff suffers because so many guests are asking for umbrellas and they simply cannot find enough. Another suggestion is to fix the TV on one of the two stationary bikes."

"Went for brunch today with friends . The staff was very uninterested in serving us . Hard to get their attention once we sat down . We’re told that the brunch menu would be avaliable til 2 . Sitting down shortly before 1 o’clock we felt we would have adequate time to enjoy all the stations available . . We ordered off the menu and waited waited for the food arrive . The portions were small so we checked the stations a second time . Lo and behold the stations were being dismantled by 1:45 and we were scrambling to get some desserts . The Mexican traditional food stations were also diminished . The pleasant canned music playing overhead was switched to loud pounding music and servers all of a sudden appearing to clear the table and present the bill . 1100 pesos per person for terrible service and little food . Don’t mind paying money when you get quality service and adequate food . Certainly won’t recommend the brunch"

"Gorgeous grounds about 12 minute walk to the central part of the town (the church and jardin.) Service is mainly warm and kind, though not very efficient, and sometime there were less polite/kind staff like at the cafe and one of the housekeepers. We rented one of the residences (3 bedroom) which are located not in the main property, but behind a gate to the side of the hotel. Very secure and with an attendant at all times. It is new and looks almost like a “Disney” version of the charming town. The residence itself was not as charmingly decorated as the hotel suite we booked on our last trip, but had a great rooftop deck with bbq, an interior courtyard, and for a fee you could have breakfast delivered to the suite. Unfortunately the housekeeping was a bit uneven…I found a hair on the sink when I first arrived, and they did not do turndown service one of the evenings. Overall I would say the hotel is almost a 5-Star experience but needs to pa attention to the small details to justify the high price. We love SMA though and are already planning a return visit!"
