Jungle-coastalpioneering

PB hotel design editorial

Where the rocky ironshore of Tulum's coastline gives way to powder-white sand, a cluster of palapa-roofed structures pressed into the jungle edge established one of the Riviera Maya's earliest boutique footholds. Mezzanine opened in the early 2000s, when Tulum Beach was still more rumour than destination, and its founders — Belgian entrepreneurs who arrived before the road filled with design hotels — built something that felt less like a resort than a private compound discovered by accident. The property holds just a handful of rooms spread across low-rise structures, their thatched roofs visible from the air above a dense canopy of palms and sea grape trees. The interiors work in the tactile language Tulum has since exported globally — polished concrete floors, carved stone soaking tubs, curved plaster walls softened by warm amber light — but here those choices were made before they became a formula. Some rooms rise to mezzanine levels under exposed timber roof rafters, with spiral steel staircases connecting sleeping platforms to loft spaces. The freestanding stone bathtubs sit in open-plan bathrooms separated from the bedroom only by a curtain arc, a layout that feels intimate rather than theatrical. Outside, the pool is edged with raw limestone boulders taken from the site, and the restaurant deck is built around living sea grape trees left to grow through the structure, their canopy doubling as shade over rope-woven chairs and concrete-topped tables facing the Caribbean.

"The atmosphere and the vibe here was very beautiful, natural and serene. The natural landscape. And the aesthetic of the hotel itself was very peaceful. The weight staff were incredibly generous and kind. Wonderful service, wonderful food. We at the restaurant, many nights and mornings, and each dish that we had was better than the last. Definitely would recommend getting the room with the versus the interior room as it rained a few days and it was nice to be able to see outside while we were chilling inside. To be able to go over to the sister hotel, Mi amor. For the day and sit on one of the beds overlooking the ocean we enjoyed the fish tacos and Cerveza and it was a beautiful afternoon. Lots of things to do within Jaguar Park, including the ruins, walking the beach and some other exploration of the jungle. It’s worth noting that you do have some security at the beginning of Jaguar Park and the mezzanine hotel is inside the park itself so you have to have a badge each day. Other than that, would highly recommend and come back when it is not seaweed season. We happen to be here during the high seaweed season and the beaches were a little bit hard to navigate."

"We had the most wonderful stay at hotel Mezzanine! It is along a beautiful part of the beach and the hotel itself is lovely. There are so many different nice spots to hang out all over the grounds with comfy hammocks or day beds both in the shade and the sun. The staff is so kind and helpful, special shoutout to Orquidia and Andy making our time here so lovely. Also we really appreciated all the details from the coffee and milk waiting for us outside of our room in the morning to the house made complimentary lemongrass tea at night. I noticed that many other hotels along the beach in tulum feel a bit tacky but this one is perfect, beautiful, quaint and you feel right at home."

"The place is paradisiac. Rooms extremely clean and comfortable. The staff makes you feel at home and are genuinely caring and helpful. You can walk to Tulum ruins on the beach. The restaurant has incredible food. Mexican beach food for breakfast and lunch and Thai for lunch and dinner. Great value for money. You’ll get unforgettable memories. The national park is beautiful to walk and bike. Quiet and evocative."

"My wife and I recently stayed at the Mezzanine Hotel Tulum. The staff were all very friendly and helpful, however the quality of all the hotel facilities is that of a 2-star hotel. If we had paid $150 per night, I may have been happy with the stay. To be specific about the room. (Room 9) • There are small wardrobes in the rooms but nowhere to put suitcases or other materials one may bring on a multi-night stay. (It may be fine for backpackers.) I wanted to put hats on top of a wardrobe (under 2m high) so I checked to see how clean it was. It was very dirty. I took the cloth I used to clean it to the front desk and they offered to move us to the ‘best room’, which was no better than the one we were in • The water supply is like a campsite. The sinks never had hot water and the shower / bath had a limited amount of hot water, I suppose each room has a small heating tank dedicated to that room. We were told not to drink the water in the room, that was fine as drinking water is provided • One of the sinks was cracked which lead to it leaking all over the floor if it was filled with more than a couple of cm of water. • The ‘hot tub’ never got hot, and doesn’t seem to have a heating system • The A/C looks like it was installed by amateurs, it did work but the internal split system was over the sliding balcony door and condensation dripped into the doorway when the system was running. Other hotel facilities. • When we arrived I needed to use the restroom and was directed to the restroom opposite the reception desk, it was an immediate red flag, you have to enter through an small room that is used as a dumping ground for all sorts of things and the state of the bathroom leaves a lot to be desired. • The restaurant is well positioned with views of the beach and sea, again the staff were helpful and responsive. However, the ‘Thai’ food was not very good, we decided to give it one more try on the second night thinking that we’d ordered the wrong dish but the food was no better. On the second night it started to rain and everyone was moved inside. The inside dining area is appalling and depressing, reminiscent of a factory canteen. I the Jaguar Park is obviously being used to try to make the hotel appear exclusive, in reality it just makes access more difficult. I would not recommend this hotel to anyone. Martin Williamson."
