PB hotel design editorial

Where the rocky ironshore of Tulum's coastline gives way to powder-white sand, a cluster of palapa-roofed structures pressed into the jungle edge established one of the Riviera Maya's earliest boutique footholds. Mezzanine opened in the early 2000s, when Tulum Beach was still more rumour than destination, and its founders — Belgian entrepreneurs who arrived before the road filled with design hotels — built something that felt less like a resort than a private compound discovered by accident. The property holds just a handful of rooms spread across low-rise structures, their thatched roofs visible from the air above a dense canopy of palms and sea grape trees. The interiors work in the tactile language Tulum has since exported globally — polished concrete floors, carved stone soaking tubs, curved plaster walls softened by warm amber light — but here those choices were made before they became a formula. Some rooms rise to mezzanine levels under exposed timber roof rafters, with spiral steel staircases connecting sleeping platforms to loft spaces. The freestanding stone bathtubs sit in open-plan bathrooms separated from the bedroom only by a curtain arc, a layout that feels intimate rather than theatrical. Outside, the pool is edged with raw limestone boulders taken from the site, and the restaurant deck is built around living sea grape trees left to grow through the structure, their canopy doubling as shade over rope-woven chairs and concrete-topped tables facing the Caribbean.

"Staff was amazing and Thai food was sooo delish and authentic"

"My wife and I recently stayed at the Mezzanine Hotel Tulum. The staff were all very friendly and helpful, however the quality of all the hotel facilities is that of a 2-star hotel. If we had paid $150 per night, I may have been happy with the stay. To be specific about the room. (Room 9) • There are small wardrobes in the rooms but nowhere to put suitcases or other materials one may bring on a multi-night stay. (It may be fine for backpackers.) I wanted to put hats on top of a wardrobe (under 2m high) so I checked to see how clean it was. It was very dirty. I took the cloth I used to clean it to the front desk and they offered to move us to the ‘best room’, which was no better than the one we were in • The water supply is like a campsite. The sinks never had hot water and the shower / bath had a limited amount of hot water, I suppose each room has a small heating tank dedicated to that room. We were told not to drink the water in the room, that was fine as drinking water is provided • One of the sinks was cracked which lead to it leaking all over the floor if it was filled with more than a couple of cm of water. • The ‘hot tub’ never got hot, and doesn’t seem to have a heating system • The A/C looks like it was installed by amateurs, it did work but the internal split system was over the sliding balcony door and condensation dripped into the doorway when the system was running. Other hotel facilities. • When we arrived I needed to use the restroom and was directed to the restroom opposite the reception desk, it was an immediate red flag, you have to enter through an small room that is used as a dumping ground for all sorts of things and the state of the bathroom leaves a lot to be desired. • The restaurant is well positioned with views of the beach and sea, again the staff were helpful and responsive. However, the ‘Thai’ food was not very good, we decided to give it one more try on the second night thinking that we’d ordered the wrong dish but the food was no better. On the second night it started to rain and everyone was moved inside. The inside dining area is appalling and depressing, reminiscent of a factory canteen. I the Jaguar Park is obviously being used to try to make the hotel appear exclusive, in reality it just makes access more difficult. I would not recommend this hotel to anyone. Martin Williamson."

"Hotel and staff were amazing! Very clean, beautiful place. Staff was very friendly and helpful! All of the food and drinks were amazing and the beach is wonderful! Also wonderful spots in the hotel to lay out on beds in or out of the sun if preferred over the beach!"

"Our stay was awesome. We were fortunate to be upgraded to the penthouse room with a plunge pool. The view, the service, the food-all 10/10! Something to consider: The hotel is in the Parque Jaguar. This means the hotel feels super safe with access checkpoints, but it is limiting in what you can bring to your room, as well as the fee the access the parque daily."
