PB hotel design editorial

Carved into a limestone hillside on the Montenegrin coast where the Adriatic narrows toward the Bay of Kotor, Lustica Bay is one of Europe's most ambitious planned resort communities — a purpose-built village conceived by Orascom Development that draws on the vernacular architecture of Dalmatian and Venetian coastal towns. The Chedi Lustica Bay, which opened in 2019 as the community's anchor hotel, sits directly on the marina, its terracotta-roofed buildings and dressed-stone facades giving the complex the settled appearance of a town that has been here far longer than it has. GHM's Chedi brand brings a particular register to the project: 111 rooms and suites arranged across low-rise blocks, the interiors working a Mediterranean-meets-Adriatic palette of warm oak, honed limestone floors, and hand-blown Murano-style pendant lights in teal and amethyst that cluster above the beds like caught sea glass. The rooms carry their Adriatic address lightly — laser-cut timber headboard panels with organic floral motifs anchor each bed wall, tufted aqua benches and ikat-print cushions drawing the colour of the water inside without resorting to literal nautical references. On the outdoor terrace restaurant, oversized woven rattan pendants hang from a white pergola structure above composite decking, rope-woven chairs arranged toward an uninterrupted view of the bay and the Orjen mountains beyond. The marina-facing pool, flanked by local stone elevations and Italian cypress trees, frames the yacht masts in its sightline with an almost deliberate compositional precision.

"Beautiful interiors, spacious modern bedroom, delicious breakfast, excellent facilities (gym, spa, pool table) and friendly staff. We had use of the facilities almost to ourselves and a complimentary room upgrade with views of the marina which was very kind. The hotel itself is certainly 5 stars and we had a peaceful and comfortable stay. Unfortunately, the location and atmosphere left a lot to be desired. The resort is a remote, purpose built, still under construction, soulless, ghost town. Meticulously manicured but not quite attractive, with slightly unsettling utopia vibes. We felt like we were in The Sims computer game, waving at the camera for something to do. Understandably it’s only March and out of season, but I’m not sure it would be particularly appealing in the summer either. However, it is a luxurious respite away from the chaotic traffic and endless development work going on around Montenegro. Driving here is not for the faint-hearted, but a car is essential to explore nearby attractions such as Kotor, Perast, Budva old town, or Porto Montenegro for a bit evening atmosphere. Dining in the hotel and marina is very expensive by local standards, and misses the mark for the price tag. Especially when you’re the only people in there with no atmosphere. Luckily there is a nice bakery and supermarket, both of which are reasonably priced. Overall if you want a peaceful break in pristine conditions and don’t mind being a bit isolated then this resort is ideal. But it was just not right for us and a bit too far from things to keep us busy."

"The room was beautiful and elegant, with a truly spectacular view that made our stay even more special. We also loved the spa facilities, which were clean, relaxing, and a perfect place to unwind. We had a wonderful stay at the hotel. The meals were excellent, especially dinner. The food was delicious and beautifully prepared. The dinner staff were particularly attentive and friendly, making the whole experience very pleasant. Our kids also had a fantastic time. They really enjoyed the pool and the cinema, and they felt very special thanks to the warm and thoughtful treatment they received as young guests. Overall, it was a great experience and we would happily return."

"We choose The Chedi Luštica Bay again and I genuinely feel that rare negative reviews come from people who simply do not understand the concept of the place they are booking. This is not a destination with constant animation and endless stimulation. In winter, it is a luxurious, quiet, almost meditative space designed for a complete reset. Peace, aesthetics and discreet service are at the forefront. If you are looking for noise, nightlife, and constant activity, this is not that type of holiday. In summer, the experience shifts: there are four different beaches available, organized excursions, and sea activities, all carefully curated. Still, everything remains aligned with the same sophisticated concept The kindness and professionalism of the staff are unmatched. There is not a single department that falls below high international hospitality standards. The team is always ready to assist, organize, adapt, and accommodate even specific requests. Their professionalism is discreet and never intrusive, yet consistently present. The food is fantastic, both in quality of ingredients and presentation, fully aligned with the hotel’s category. I especially appreciate that the rooms are subtly refined year after year. Nothing is overlooked, even in the smallest details, which reflects serious management and a commitment to maintaining high standards. This is a hotel for people who value exceptional service. If you understand that concept, the experience is truly outstanding."

"We stayed for 2 nights and celebrated NYE at the Chedi Lustica Bay and had a great and relaxing time. We loved the hotel, the design and facilities. Our rooms were super spaciou with balconies and great views, luxuriously appointed and very comfortable. The hotel is in a stunning location right in the bay overlooking the lighthouse and small marina. Breakfast was very nice and we also enjoyed the well-equipped gym. The staff were super helpful and friendly. We visited Montenegro on our road trip through the region, having a car is a real plus to easily explore attractions around as Lustica Bay itself is pretty small. Although more a summer destination, we loved our winter stay, we enjoyed some nice walks around the bay area and the hotel has. winter village set up which was really nicely done with different food stands and live music performances."
