PB hotel design editorial

Perched on a hill above Fès el-Bali with views stretching across the medina's rooftop sprawl toward the Middle Atlas, Hotel Sahrai was conceived from the outset as a contemporary counterpoint to the ancient city below — a rare thing in Moroccan hospitality, which so often defaults to riad nostalgia. The architect Imaad Rahmouni positioned the low-slung building to maximise its elevated vantage, and Italian designer Paola Navone brought the interiors into being with characteristic eclecticism: tangerine-upholstered platform beds, warm limestone wall cladding in large ashlar blocks, and pendant lanterns with geometric brass frames that nod to Fassi metalwork without replicating it. The 40 rooms and suites carry a palette of camel, burnt orange, and creamy stone, with embossed plasterwork headboards on the upper-category rooms drawing directly from the zellige and stucco traditions of the medina without employing those materials literally. The rooftop bar is the property's most assured gesture — a mirrored ceiling multiplying a cluster of angular lantern pendants above curved sectional seating, the whole space opening through full-height glazing onto a teak-decked terrace where hand-thrown ceramic vases anchor the corners against the city glow below. At the pool, a teak surround meets a rendered stone archway and a horizon edge that dissolves into the mountain panorama at dusk. The effect is closer to a considered private residence than a hotel, which is precisely Navone's intention.

"The spa experience at Hotel Shari was exceptional. The wonderful woman at the spa desk was so friendly and helpful. She made it very easy to accommodate three of us on very short notice. I received a body scrub and massage and I don't think my skin and body have ever felt so refreshed. The detox drink afterwards was so nice."

"This hotel is beautiful in so many ways. The rooms are stunning, spacious, and very clean, and the staff are incredibly helpful. The restaurants have a great selection of food, ranging from Moroccan to Lebanese and Italian. Perched on a hill right above Fes el Bali medina, the hotel offers a stunning panoramic view when dining on the rooftop (Jungle Fes), where we received great service. Meryem was incredibly efficient; she even brought me a whole plate of cucumber slices when she noticed me trying to catch the one in my drink. Such a sweet touch! The reception team is highly attentive to your needs. Omar was so dedicated and kindly offered to post the mail I hadn't found time to send before leaving for my flight. I didn't get the names of the ladies at reception, but they were so helpful with so many things during our stay. We didn't get a chance to try the spa, but I have no doubt it is amazing, and I would have loved a massage in those stunning surroundings. We also loved having access to the underground car park, which is safe and guarded. Another highlight was the lovely gentleman who comes by late every afternoon with treats like homemade nougat, while replenishing anything you may need, such as water or towels. Thanks so much to everyone for looking after us so well during our stay! F&H"

"Very pleasant dinner in the Italian restaurant. Cocktails overpriced (and when I say overpriced I mean they were Mayfair prices) and weak. But the real problem was the arrogance of the manager (?) at the front desk. When asked to find a taxi after dinner he said No, we could use the hotel shuttle - for which he wanted to charge us ten times what a taxi charged for the same journey. That is not hyperbole - literally 10x. I do have the word to describe him.....but I doubt TripAdvisor would publish this review if I used them. Starts with a W and ends in R. With the thing a ship uses to moor in the middle."
