PB hotel design editorial

Forty minutes south of Marrakech, where the High Atlas recedes into a lunar plateau of pale rock and scrubby acacia, the Agafay Desert offers a landscape that is less sand dune than raw geology — and it is precisely this arid strangeness that Habitas chose as the setting for Caravan by Habitas Agafay. The camp deploys canvas tents and geodesic dome structures across terraced ground held together by dry-stone retaining walls, the whole compound sitting low enough in the terrain that it seems to grow from it rather than interrupt it. Individual tent pavilions are separated by planted berms and native shrub, giving each unit a degree of seclusion that belies the social energy of the central facilities. Inside, the design draws a clear line between Moroccan craft tradition and contemporary restraint. Tent interiors layer hand-knotted Beni Ourain rugs in monochrome geometric patterns over wide-plank timber floors, while brass wall sconces and small brass table lamps warm the canvas ceiling above tadelakt-finished headboard panels in terracotta pink. Rattan wardrobe panels, wirework Bertoia-style side chairs, and carved zellige-trimmed mirrors introduce local material culture without tipping into pastiche. The open-sided dining pavilion above the pool terrace is roofed in split-reed cane with oversized woven raffia pendant lights, green-lacquered rattan chairs pulled up to plain timber tables — a room that feels more like a souk workshop than a hotel restaurant, which is entirely the point.

Caravan by Habitas Agafay Reviews

100 reviews

"I rarely write negative reviews, but this was honestly one of the most disappointing hospitality experiences I’ve had. I truly cannot understand how Caravan Agafay by Our Habitas charges close to €500 per night for what is essentially a very basic tent with extremely poor facilities. There was no proper lighting, no reliable hot water, and the shower barely worked. After we reported that we had no hot water in the room, someone came to “fix” it, but it remained unusable — the water would switch randomly between freezing cold and scalding hot and the water pressure was almost nonexistent, making it nearly impossible to actually shower. The tent itself was also not well maintained: there was visible dirt, the window net was torn, and the door wouldn’t stay closed unless locked with the key. On top of that, the prices for activities and food are completely unreasonable. A 2-hour e-bike ride costs €160 for two people, and a very ordinary dinner cost around €200. At the pool, there is no service. You have to go to a bar and get everything yourself. And at the pool that is further away from reception, the bar is not functional at all. Another surprising issue was dinner. One evening we had to wait for a table because they didn’t have any available, which I honestly find unacceptable at this type of property. I have never experienced this at any accommodation in my life, especially not at a place charging these prices. To be fair, the food itself was actually the only good thing there. However, the service around it was poor. Getting someone’s attention to bring basic things like this was surprisingly difficult, as the staff rarely seemed attentive to guests. To be clear, I have stayed in many remote or desert-style accommodations around the world, often in far more isolated places and for much less money, and the comfort, maintenance, and service were always significantly better. In fact, Agafay is not even particularly remote; the area is full of tourist camps. This place simply does not deliver the level of quality, comfort, or service that its price suggests. It feels like you are paying purely for the brand name. Unfortunately, this was a last-minute booking, and I trusted the Our Habitas name without checking enough reviews beforehand. That was a mistake. I had even considered booking one of their properties in Namibia, but after this experience I will definitely not make that mistake again."

"We have just spent a glorious 3 nights here and are missing it already! A short transfer from the airport and you are suddenly in the middle of nowhere with the most spectacular views. Camels, sunsets and the mountains all around! The staff were all so friendly and could not do enough for you. So attentive and really helped make the stay special. Our tent was really comfortable, chilly at night time but hot water bottles were left on the bed each night. A lovely touch and did the trick. Sadly the pool was too cold to swim in and did look like it could do with a clean. This was probably because no one was expected to swim in it?! Food was delicious, everything we ate was beautiful to look at and to taste. Breakfast was especially good, a huge choice and all freshly cooked. Looking forward to a return visit!"

"The place is completely dilapidated. The staff were friendly and polite, but unfortunately, they were left with the impossible task of running a hotel that looked more like a refugee camp post hurricane or other natural disaster. Our tent accommodation was full of holes, crumbling, it was straight out of a horror movie. They should be ashamed to charge what they did or anything for that matter. Run."
