PB hotel design editorial

Long before it became a hotel, the address near Bab Doukkala was the most celebrated table in Marrakech — a restaurant opened in 1946 by two French women who taught Moroccan cooking to the wives of the local aristocracy and, eventually, to Winston Churchill himself. La Maison Arabe was revived as a hotel in 1998 by Italian count Fabrizio Ruspoli, who commissioned a careful reconstruction of the original riad compound into 26 rooms and suites arranged around two internal courtyards. The architecture draws on deep medina tradition: tadelakt plasterwork in warm ochres and sage, carved cedarwood screens and wardrobe panels worked in diamond lattice, hand-painted muqarnas ceilings in the grander suites, and zellige tilework at every threshold. The narrow courtyard pool, its floor inlaid with geometric mosaic, is flanked by mashrabiya-screened galleries stacked across three levels — a composition that feels less designed than accumulated, as though the building had always been exactly this. The second pool garden, set within a walled grove of olive, palm, and bougainvillea beyond the medina walls, introduces a more expansive register: white canvas cabanas with scalloped canopies, teak sun loungers, and a large tiled pool whose stillness reflects the enclosing treeline back on itself. Guest rooms move between two moods — some lacquered in crimson silk drapes and carved dark walnut, others softened with linen and firelit plaster alcoves — but the quality of craft throughout, sourced from Marrakchi artisans, remains consistently precise.

"This is a lovely place! We stayed here for a weekend and it was the perfect choice to squeeze a lot in, but still have a relaxing break. I booked and sent requests very last minute, but they organised everything for us smoothly and stress free (airport transfers, hot air balloon trip etc). It’s a great hotel to spend time in and absorb the atmosphere. It’s several old riads connected together, so a bit of a labyrinth you can wander round and explore. Feels a bit like Hogwarts. Eg we found a roaring fireplace in a corridor one morning which was really special. Lovely stone floors, intricately carved wood, interesting little nooks, etc. Even the gym has an interesting arched corridor which is worth having a wander through. Really kind and friendly staff, very helpful and hospitable making sure we had a wonderful stay. Lovely restaurant around the pool - so nice that we went there several times as it was so atmospheric and easy. Food was delicious, waiters were friendly. Live music in the evening with the musicians sitting in an alcove across the pool - magical. We stayed in a junior suite with garden view - very comfortable and atmospheric. It was lovely to sit on the balcony in the morning overlooking the garden, drinking coffee and watching the birds. The afternoon tea was also very nice (I believe they have an in-house pastry chef). Overall the atmosphere is just top notch. No regrets! Highly recommended."

"I've just returned from spending a wonderful week in this charming riad-style hotel. It's inside the medina and so you get a flavour of the old part of town, maybe slightly a little off the beaten track but not too much. Being a riad, there was of course plenty of traditional decoration and architecture. It was nice to take refreshment in one of the internal courtyards, surrounded by latticed windows and doors and marble tiles, where the only sound was the gentle splash of water from a small fountain. I ate in two of the hotel's restaurants and the food was delicious, even if I couldn't finish all of the lamb tagine; my own mistake for ordering a filling first course. The restaurant specializing in Moroccan cuisine had musical accompaniment and exotic dancing which added very well to the atmosphere. There was also a comfortable bar, where from time to time a jazz pianist played a number of well-known melodies. The bar was never crowded, so you could enjoy a drink without there being too much chatter. All of the staff were really friendly and any request was attended to immediately. I would especially like to thank Hakkim and Salma, the two concierges in my part of the hotel. They were always willing to engage in conversation and they had a lot of useful advice to pass on. Thanks also to Siham and Nabih for keeping my room so clean. I would be happy to stay here again when I am next in Marrakech."

"The staff here are terrific and so are the spacious rooms. And there are 3 good restaurants. The hotel is a little eccentric, which I like. It's down a short (and safe) alley way, and has staircases that seem to lead nowhere. But that's all part of its charm. And to repeat, the best thing is the staff."

"Fabulous Hotel! There was nothing too much trouble at the hotel. Our patio room was spacious and had the fluffiest towels ever. The only thing that would have made it better was the option of room service."
