PB hotel design editorial

Five interconnected riads deep in Marrakech's Kasbah quarter, pressed against the walls of the Saadian Tombs, were stitched together over years of painstaking restoration to create La Sultana Marrakech — a property whose most remarkable quality is structural: the way it moves between distinct historic buildings without ever feeling like a museum or a theme park. The hand-carved terracotta arches that frame the pool courtyard were worked by local artisans using techniques unchanged since the Saadian dynasty, their muqarnas capitals and layered brickwork carrying the same vocabulary as the royal necropolis just beyond the garden wall. Inside, the 28 suites navigate a layered decorative language that borrows from several centuries simultaneously — tadelakt plaster walls in warm ivory, Venetian glass chandeliers suspended from stucco ceilings, handwoven Beni Ourain rugs spread across polished Carrara marble floors. Lacquered Boulle-style commodes sit alongside carved wooden doors and botanical-print armchairs in a combination that might read as eccentric but instead carries the feeling of a collector's private palace assembled across generations. The rooftop terrace, set with green-upholstered banquettes against a reed canopy, frames a direct view of a tiled minaret that has stood in this corner of the medina for four hundred years — a reminder that whatever design decisions were made inside, the building's most powerful context remains entirely beyond them.

"We visited for our wedding anniversary and completely unexpectedly the hotel upgraded us to the best room, the Lion Suite. Absolutely fabulous. The hotel has to be seen to be believed. Totally unique and in the heart of the Medina."

"Lovely hotel in the centre of Marrakesh. Easy walk to everything. Fabulous roof terrace with bar and restaurant. Fish bbq on roof was spectacular. Cookery course a must do! Room was spacious and comfortable set around a sunny courtyard. Service was perfect!"

"We had a fabulous stay at La Sultana. Like so many gems in Marrakech, it is hidden away behind an alley but go through the doors and you are transported into Aladdin’s cave. The architecture and decoration is stunning and on a match with many of the palaces on the tourist rota but as a guest you get to enjoy it in your own home. Divided into 4 stunning Riads with individual guest rooms secluded off each, we were fortunate enough to be upgraded to a junior suite. Pretty much the most impressive bedroom we have ever stayed in! Without doubt Marrakech is a chaotic kaleidoscope of sights and sounds so it is vital that as a tourist you have an oasis of calm to return and relax in which is exactly what La Sultana offers. The staff are perfectly attentive but never intrusive and on the top of the building there is the magical cocktail bar area to enjoy an alcoholic drink (and those are harder to find than you would think in Marrakech) and enjoy the stunning sunsets before or after a meal. Most nights we took the opportunity to wander the city and eat out which we enjoyed and would recommend any guest does. However, we treated ourselves the last night by dinning at La Sultana and it was certainly very high end and wonderful food. The morning breakfasts were equally good and the egg specials set you up for a day of non stop walking. Talking of relaxing we booked ourselves in for a Hammam and massage in the hotel Spa and oh my goodness…..The Hammam was quite the experience and well worth it but the massage was absolute heaven. Beautifully pitched between the rather weak gentle soothing Spa that you get at home and the full on sports massage. They obviously make them strong but gentle in Marrakech and both my wife and I agreed it was simply the best massage we had ever experienced. If only we could get one every week. That alone would be enough reason to go back to La Sultana and if we could give the hotel 6 stars we would. We cannot recommend it enough. A genuinely unique experience and a treat everyone should wish for if only Aladdin’s Genie lamp was to hand……"

"So many wonderful memories created in Marrakech & @ La Sultana! The guest experience is 2nd to none. Each person sees themselves as an ambassador for the property & it shows in their level of attention. Every morning @ breakfast the manager would remember my wife's coffee of choice (decaf with oat milk) and have it ready. Just one of the advantages of staying at a property that is intimate. Mohammed in the upstairs bar area is the ultimate host. Kind & generous with his attention, the rest of the staff follows his lead. La Sultana is perfectly positioned in the medina with access to everything yet somehow still insulated from the noise. Our room was large enough & well appointed. The housekeeping staff kept everything clean & restocked without us asking for special attention...it was truly intuitive. We will return to our friends @ La Sultana anytime we are in Marrakech!"
