PB hotel design editorial

Jacques Garcia's fondness for theatrical darkness — the lacquered walls, the Baccarat chandeliers, the velvet banquettes that seem to absorb candlelight rather than reflect it — finds perhaps its most unapologetic expression at Selman Marrakech, which opened in 2011 on the Chrifia plain south of the medina. The French designer, best known for reshaping the Hotel Costes in Paris, was given 40 hectares of palm grove and a brief that centred on the Arabian horse: the property was conceived as a palace for both guests and a resident herd of Arabians, whose stables and paddocks form part of the guest experience. The architecture by Garcia draws on Moroccan palace tradition — rose-tinted tadelakt plasterwork, carved plaster friezes, mashrabiya screens in dark-stained cedar — arranged around a central axis that culminates in a reflecting pool and formal garden visible from the upper terraces. The 57 rooms and suites are distributed across low-rise pavilions, their interiors ranging from saturated fuchsia velvet and zellige tile to burnished gold silk damask, each scheme carrying the maximalist confidence Garcia applies to all his commissions. The spa hammam, with its ribbed plaster vaulting and candlelit plunge pool, demonstrates how traditional Moroccan craft techniques can be pushed into something closer to stage design than restoration. The restaurant, hung with enormous crystal chandeliers above a circuit of crimson banquettes, maintains that same operatic register throughout.

"We stayed 7 days at the Selman and this is truly an amazing hotel. We went to 2 other top rated hotels, the Royal Mansour and the Amanjena, for dinnner and also have a peak at what those hotels are about, and each time came back to the Selman very happy this was our place. From the manicured garden, beautiful pool, attentive service, restaurants, room and amenities everything works beautifully. What also made the difference is the superb combination of modern blended with traditional Moroccan design. This is truly the sweet spot. It’s pricey but quite a bit less than the other hotels we visited but offers to our taste a far more agreeable experience. Highly recommended."

"Elegant, slightly eccentric hotel with a seductive energy and a relaxing atmosphere - perfect for unwinding. Special mention goes to restaurant Sabo and our charming, excellent waiter Aimad. The luxurios, dramatic interior design, combined with dim lighting, loud disco music, and certain energy in the air, gave us somewhat Studio 54 vibes - which we love - and immediately put us in a great mood. Dinner here was a real highlight of our trip. Other standout feautures of this hotel include the spectacular outdoor pool and the plush rooms, which are spacious and very comfortable. Many details feel thougtfully designed and we especially appreciated the large balcony and cozy seating areas. On the downside - and contrary to other reviews - we found the breakfast lacking in quality. While the selection is good, the ingredients themselves (bread, salmon, etc.) felt very subpar. Additionally a few staff uniforms appeared slightly worn and certain aspects of the property could benefit from a refresh. We will definitely return to escape everyday life at this elegant, sensual and characterful haven."
