PB hotel design editorial

Kasbah architecture in the Skoura oasis, where the pre-Saharan plains begin their long slide toward the Draa Valley, provided Dar Ahlam with one of Morocco's most cinematically charged settings — a fortified tower of pisé and tadelakt rising from a grove of date palms and ancient olive trees that filters and softens the hammering southern light. The property, conceived by French designer Jacques Garcia and opened in 2002, was carved from a genuine nineteenth-century kasbah rather than built to approximate one, and that distinction runs through everything here: the crenellated parapets, the geometric incised relief work on the tower facades, the compressed mud walls that hold cool air against the desert heat. Garcia's interiors move between two registers — a stripped, mineral calm in the sleeping rooms, where tadelakt walls in warm sand tones meet handwoven Berber rugs, arched pisé fireplaces, and turned-wood lamps, and a deeper, more saturated drama in the dining spaces, where terracotta-red plaster walls glow under reed-lattice ceilings and saffron linen curtains billow inward from unglazed windows. Safari-style canvas chairs and blackened steel writing desks furnish the suites in a way that feels closer to a well-travelled collector's personal quarters than to conventional hotel decoration. The pool terrace, lined in dark verde marble and shaded by canvas parasols, draws the kasbah tower into its composition — the whole landscape arranged as if for a scene that was always already there.

"Kasbah hidden in the palm grove, Berber-style rooms, and warm service. Dinners under the stars and the scent of spices everywhere. Authentic and romantic."

"The High Atlas Mountains have always been my favorite part of Morocco. This hotel, while in existence for many years, was not built on my previous trip through the Skoura area. I was so excited to experience Dar Ahlam and it was a thrilling experience. The estate is magnificent as are the various structures and the artistic details throughout. The staff is marvelous, so well-trained, warm, and exceedingly capable. They are anxious to please the guests and carry out all requests in the most gracious way possible. There are too many names to mention but I wanted to singlet out Ahmed, (I believe I have the correct name) who assisted our arrival, departure and other events. he was always so lovely. Finally, my driver for five days, Sliman, was simply extraordinary, Not only were his driving skills outstanding but his intelligence and knowledge of all aspects of Moroccan life added greatly to our experience. He knew every interesting corner of the Atlas Mountains. All the meals were simply delicious-such fresh and well thought out lunches and dinners and beautifully served in magnificent settings. If I could make a couple constructive comments, they would be the following: The beds at the desert camp are exceedingly hard and therefore very uncomfortable. Also, getting into the sink area is very difficult having to stoop so low. I believe the tents could be redesigned . I wish that the dunes were higher but I understand the reason for locating the camp in this rather isolated area. You are such experts at luxury. I know you can improve upon this experience. James was a marvelous butler and anticipated all our needs. My other comment regards excursions. Fortunately i know the area very well and was able to be proactive in suggesting the trips I wanted to take. No one really asked me or suggested possible excursions. I announced what I wanted. There are many fascinating trips in the area excluding the desert camp that I am sure many guests would like to know about,. Thank you for a marvelous stay and many memorable experiences."

"What an amazing hotel, a truly unique, stunningly beautiful property. The grounds and gardens of this hotel (much of the produce you consume are produced on-site) are meticulously manicured, which is noteworthy because every meal you will be offered, will be served in a different venue in the gardens. There is no central dining room or restaurant, but there are 40-50 beautiful, private, intimate spots scattered throughout the expansive gardens where your meals will be served. Each night these private dining spots are illuminated by hundreds of candles, manufactured in the resorts in-house candle factory. The food is Michelin level quality. Rooms are divided amongst the main building (Kasbah) or garden suites. (A tip: if you prefer not to climb stairs inside the Kasbah, book a garden suite.) The staff are incredibly professional, and provide 5-star service. I believe that the resort employs around 80 staff, most of them from the town of Skoura, and many of them have been with the resort for 20-30 years. The name of the hotel translates into "House of Dreams", and rather than leave your comments in a standard hotel guest book, there is a special room called the Room of Dreams, where you can write your comments on parchment paper, which is then rolled up into a bamboo tube, and inserted into the wall, like contracts were stored in the 15th century. When you arrive, the hotel manager will present you with a menu of different activities and excursions, which the hotel will drive you to. When we departed the hotel, my wife hugged all the nearby employees, and wept tears of happiness."

"The hotel is beautiful. The food is delish. But you have to specify you are not vegetarian. I gave it four starts because they say all activities are included. But we were offered two very boring activities and nothing else. The weirdest part of this hotels is that you can’t lock your room. Always open. Never locks. Creepy."

"The staff is really good, the hotel is charming but you could see the hotel could use some money to maintain the property way better. our room was dirty and it was one of the worst beds we’ve ever slept! After a long car journey to get there, we’re at least expecting to have a good rest. But when we got there we were disappointed with the cleaning of the room and with an awful bed… this for me is unacceptable for a hotel like that. Also there was no blackout in the room, so you’d wake up as soon as the sun rises… The experience over the desert was really breathtaking though and our tent was cleaner than the hotel room."
