PB hotel design editorial

Few buildings in sub-Saharan Africa carry quite the weight of colonial-era grandeur that the Polana Serena Hotel does. Designed by Sir Herbert Baker — the South African architect who also shaped the Union Buildings in Pretoria and contributed to Lutyens's New Delhi — and opened in 1922, the cream-painted Neoclassical pile above Maputo Bay has the symmetrical sweep and confident cornice lines of a colonial governor's fantasy, its curved wings embracing a pool terrace that steps down toward the Indian Ocean. The facade's arched loggias and balustraded terraces, visible in the exterior image at dusk, carry Baker's characteristic synthesis of Cape Dutch formality and Edwardian civic ambition. Inside, the property manages the tension between its colonial bones and a contemporary African sensibility with varying degrees of success. The bar leans fully into the building's heritage — dark mahogany millwork, brass torchère lamps, and hand-painted azulejo-style tiles depicting Portuguese caravels, a deliberate nod to Mozambique's Lusophone past. The glass-roofed veranda restaurant, furnished with white Lloyd Loom wicker and teal cushions over a diamond-pattern stone floor, frames views across the bay through tall French doors. Guest rooms take a lighter approach: ikat-patterned bedspreads in indigo or terracotta, large-format photographic wallcoverings depicting woven Mozambican baskets, warm timber floors. The overall effect places local craft tradition in dialogue with the building's imperial architecture — an uneasy but honest conversation.

"The hotel was excellent. My room was modern and well equipped. Where things fell down a bit was in the restaurant and bar, where service was vey slow. How long can it take to get a cup of coffee with breakfast?"

"Absolutely beautiful hotel. Loved every minute of my stay and I luckily got to stay twice! Once in the new part and once in the older part. Both fabulous. They are the most amazing, caring, kind staff and security in the hotel. They were genuinely brilliant. The breakfast caters to everyone and I really enjoyed it. The pool area is gorgeous, as is the view. Can’t recommend the hotel highly enough."

"I stayed here for a few nights recently and was really impressed with the whole experience. Overall, the hotel was very well maintained from reception to the rooms and public areas. Housekeeping did a great job of keeping everything spotless during my stay. What really stood out was the staff: professional, courteous, and genuinely friendly, always ready with recommendations and any requests to make the stay welcoming and comfortable. Also, the location is perfect for both business and leisure travelers. The hotel is strategically situated close to a number of shopping malls, and within walking distance or a short drive from restaurants. We therefore found it easy to tour restaurants within the locality when we wanted variety beyond the hotel dining. The on-site restaurant served meals of good quality with fair variety. Try the Beef Lilly sandwich. The breakfast buffet exceeded our expectations, providing a nice mix of hot and cold courses, fresh fruits, and omelets or waffles made to order, which did meet different dietary preferences. The gym was well-equipped with modern cardio and weight machines, and the lap pool was great for morning swims-clean, proper length for laps. Not sure of size-they said 15M but seemed bigger-there was no one swimming when I went every day. The WiFi was reliable and fast throughout, perfect for work or streaming. All in all, this hotel grants great value for money with an unbeatable combination of location, amenities, and service. I would definitely come back and recommend it to others."

"This is probably the most beautiful hotel I’ve ever stayed in. Our room was huge, with a balcony with chaise lounges on it for sunning. The lobby is always supplied with a huge bouquet of fresh flowers. The staff all go out of their way to be helpful and kind."
