PB hotel design editorial

Perched atop a granite inselberg rising from the flat ochre plain of the southern Namib, ten canvas-and-timber tented suites thread between ancient boulders on elevated timber stilts — a construction approach that avoids disturbing the rock formations entirely while placing guests at eye level with one of the oldest desert landscapes on earth. Zannier Hotels Sonop, which opened in 2019, draws its design concept directly from the golden age of British colonial exploration, evoking the kind of extravagant expedition camp a nineteenth-century naturalist might have assembled at the far edge of the known world. The interiors carry this conceit with genuine commitment rather than pastiche. Ebonised four-poster beds dressed in slate linen anchor each tent, surrounded by campaign chests in brass-fitted mahogany, leather director's chairs, Persian kilim rugs laid over dark hardwood floors, and brass telescopes positioned toward the desert horizon. Botanical prints and antique maps frame the canvas walls, while glass chandeliers cast warm light across dining tables set with silver candelabra and cane-back chairs. Timber decks cantilevered over the boulders extend each suite outward into the landscape, the Tiras Mountains dissolving into a pale horizon at sunset. The communal dining tent, furnished with a long colonial-style table and lined with open canvas panels on all sides, frames that same view at the precise moment the sun drops behind the range — an effect that no amount of interior decoration could improve upon.

About

The thrill of adventure is omnipresent at Zannier Sonop; a ten tented-suite lodge constructed on top of granite boulders in authentic 1920’s British colonial style. Set within 5,600 hectares of untouched desert wilderness, the lodge captures the restorative essence of the surroundings. From the reception to the partially walled bathroom with vintage bathtubs and private terrace, all tents focus on the desert’s richness and awe-inspiring views with explorer-style antiques. Guided nature drives, horse riding from the lodge’s stables, wellness spa, desert yoga, gala-style dining, open-air cinema by the infinity pool and nightly stargazing capture the spirit of old-world adventure.

"A beautiful and relaxing stay in the desert. We had 3 nights here and the drive into the wilderness was worth it. The tented lodges were beautiful and excellently appointed. Uninterrupted views across the landscape made for a relaxing setting. Food - all excellent and very happy to accommodate food preferences / allergies with prior notice. You certainly don’t go hungry here ! Pool area - although there are a lot of steps up and down to it the pool area is small but in a beautiful location and well supported with a bar and fresh fruit on tap. Spa - we didn’t have any treatments but it looked very good and the gym was small but had everything you need for a holiday workout - including great air con! Activities - we did an am sunrise drive, a pm afternoon hike up the mountain and the highlight - a horse ride. A fantastic stay, excellent staff - a big shout out to Victor and Andy. Thank you all."

"Wow!!! What an absolute delightful hotel with beautiful design right out of a Wes Anderson movie! Such a nice experience from easy booking with Herman, to warm welcome by Riaz and Elisabeth as well as a lovely service at the restaurant by Veronica and Timothé! All staff were genuinely kind and did their outmost to make our stay special! Incredible setting of tented suites on a top of granite boulders in beautiful desert landscape! The luxury tented suites are sooo stylish! The 1920 British colonial design with antique furniture is perfect in every little detail! The food was exquisite!! Special shoutout to the chef who was incredible creative and made every meal an experience of its own! We stayed three nights and loved every minute of it! For next trip, I'll definitely check if there's a Zannier hotel at the destination!"

"We absolutely loved our stay at Zannier Sonop. It’s the remoteness that makes it so special – you really do feel like you’re in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by the most incredible desert landscape. The setting is breathtaking and the whole concept of the lodge is so well thought out. The “tents” (and I use that term loosely, because they’re far more luxurious than you’d ever imagine) are beautiful – stylish, comfortable and completely in keeping with the surroundings. Service was wonderful throughout our stay. Hilton was so welcoming, and honestly, every single member of the team was fantastic – we don’t want to name anyone in case we forget someone, as everyone went out of their way to make our stay special. I’ve seen a few reviews suggesting it’s not 5-star, but I couldn’t disagree more. You just have to be mindful of where you are – this isn’t your typical city hotel, it’s something truly unique. The experience, the setting, and the care that goes into every detail make it absolutely five-star in its own way. We felt so lucky to have spent time there – it’s one of those places that stays with you long after you leave. Completely unforgettable."

"Zannier Sonop is one of the most extraordinary hotels we’ve ever stayed in. The setting is breathtaking, but what truly makes it unforgettable is the people. From the moment we arrived, we felt completely at home thanks to the warmth and kindness of the staff. Our guide, Michael, was brilliant—so knowledgeable, funny, and thoughtful. Elizabeth welcomed us with such warmth and had us laughing throughout our stay. Teresia, Victor, Hilton, and the entire team treated us with genuine care that made every moment special. All the meals were included in our stay, and the chefs went above and beyond to make every dish delicious. Their creativity and attention to detail made dining an experience of its own (shoutout to Wesley!). It’s rare for us to want to return to the same place twice, but Zannier Sonop has captured our hearts. We’re already planning our next visit."
