PB hotel design editorial

Marcel Wanders is not a designer who mistakes restraint for sophistication, and the Andaz Amsterdam Prinsengracht gave him precisely the canvas his imagination demands. Opened in 2012 within a purpose-built structure on the Prinsengracht — one of Amsterdam's four principal canals in the UNESCO-listed Grachtengordel — the 122-room property wears its Dutch identity not as period costume but as surrealist theatre. The facade, clad in warm brick with vertical strips of saturated colour punctuating the window rhythm, holds its own among the 17th-century canal houses flanking it without pretending to be one. Inside, Wanders deploys the full repertoire of his Studio Wanders practice: oversized bell-shaped Moooi pendants hang in the lobby alongside cocoon-red high-backed chairs that create pockets of intimate enclosure within an otherwise open-plan ground floor. The guestrooms carry large-format photographic murals — fish cradled in ornate silver spoons, herring caught mid-thrash against the city's triple-X municipal symbol — that place Amsterdam's mercantile and maritime past into gleefully absurd relief. Diamond-quilted wallcoverings, navy lacquered ceilings, and white upholstered platform beds establish a consistent palette of graphic contrast. The restaurant, anchored by oversized gilt dome pendants above a mix of quilted velvet and leather seating in cobalt, ivory, and tobacco, carries the same convulsive energy — theatrical without tipping into chaos, which is the particular trick Wanders has always known how to pull off.

"Andaz Amsterdam is a great hotel and would highly recommend to anyone looking for their next stay. The hotel is in a great location with close proximity and walking distance to everything. The staff are very helpful and the bar was a great place to enjoy a drink with friends. The rooms are clean and make good use of the space. Will be back again."

"The hotel itself is beautiful, no complaints there. But two experiences during my stay left a sour taste that I can’t overlook. The first happened late at night on April 7th. I went to the front desk for a bottle of water only to be asked whether I’d already finished the two complimentary bottles from check-in. When I said yes and asked for more, the staff member made a visible show of reluctance, went to the storeroom, and came back with one bottle, making a point of telling me that was all he could give me and anything more I’d have to pay for. I’m a Hyatt Explorist who was staying on a Privé rate. I’ve stayed at Andaz properties all over the world, Andaz Lisbon most recently, and I’ve never once been questioned about water. Being made to feel like a nuisance for asking is just not what this brand is supposed to feel like. The second issue: the bathroom light was broken for my entire stay. I didn’t have time to report it earlier because I was busy with my itinerary. But when I flagged it at check-out, all I got was a flat “I’ll let the team know.” No apology. Nothing. I wasn’t asking for compensation, just a basic acknowledgement that it was an inconvenience. Neither of these are unsolvable problems. But the way both were handled says a lot. First and last stay here. And to those who are looking for a place to stay in Amsterdam, give this a miss."

"Great location. Room was ready a little late but they offered a welcome beverage while we waited. Interesting room layout, fine for a night, but not an extended stay. Breakfast service needs work- 20-30 minutes for coffee, not clear who was server, received wrong items ordered, staff let buffet items run out early. They did honor late check out and held bags until later in evening when done sightseeing. I used a FNA but not certain id pay cash or points."

"The Andaz is a beautiful hotel, just not for us. We stayed here for 8 nights in a canal view room at the end of our trip to Europe. Ultimately we left tired and a bit disappointed. The hotel is in a great location, overlooking a canal in the Jordaan. It is an easy 5 minute walk to the trams, the Nine Streets shopping area is very close, and there are lots of restaurants close by. The hotel itself is beautiful, a quirky interior design you would expect from an Andaz. The lobby is amazing, with a great bar area and a casual restaurant. A more formal restaurant is located behind, and breakfast is served there. There is a quiet garden courtyard, which is a very calming, tranquil space to spend an hour. One thing we liked was that the elevators always returned to the lobby, so there was usually one waiting for us when we returned. No groups of people waiting. It's a small thing, but it makes a difference. But it's the small things that work against the hotel too, especially when it comes to the rooms. Listing them all seems a little nit picky, but added together they resulted in 8 disturbed nights of sleep. The rooms were very warm, and while there was a thermostat, it didn't seem to do anything. We had it set to 18.5C / 65F, the lowest it would go, but the room never cooled to anything close to that. We could open the window slightly, but we were located on the first floor overlooking the entrance, and it was noisy with taxis and passersby. The biggest issue we had though was the lack of a separate bathroom. This wasn't completely obvious when we booked, but we wouldn't stay here again for this reason. The toilet is in a small cupboard, the shower is located in a glass cubicle and the vanity is located in the center of the room with a small bowl and a two sided mirror. There is no separation from the sleeping area, other than a curtain that is orientated in the wrong direction to actually do anything. The result is a complete lack of privacy - don't stay here with anyone you aren't intimate with, because you can see everything when someone is showering, hear everything when someone uses the toilet, and you must brush your teeth in the middle of the bedroom. The water splashes everywhere, resulting in a slippery floor. The steam from the shower fills the room when the cubicle is opened. The toilet seat creaks, waking your partner in the night. The basin is in the wrong position for shaving. There isn't enough room to easily pass when someone is sat at the vanity. We often bumped into the vanity at night because we couldn't use the night light as it was way too bright. We left a glass bottle of water on the vanity to drink at night, as it was close to the bed, but ended up knocking it off with the glass shattering into hundred of little pieces all over the floor. This wouldn't have happened with a separate bathroom. Then there is the rest of the room, which is very busy with a big fish mural, dark blue painted ceilings, and a big overhanging lamp. The whole effect was not restful, and we banged into the lamp, and stubbed our feet multiple times on a steel angle that held the bed together. So we didn't sleep much. The other disappointment came from the dining experience. We ate at the bar restaurant when we arrived, and it was pretty good, if a little expensive, but when we went back a few nights later the menu had been reduced and there wasn't much to choose from. As we were staying so long, the hotel kindly gave us a complimentary meal at the upscale restaurant, Renvy. This was fabulous, but when we went back because of the limited bar menu, they wouldn't seat us because we didn't have reservations, even though it was early evening and the restaurant was almost empty. Finally, note that service is friendly but can be slow. There is no doorman or help with luggage on arrival. So overall, a mixed experience that makes this hotel difficult to rate. Probably for a night or two for a couple this would be a fun and unique experience. If you are looking for a more relaxing experience, value privacy, or are looking for excellent services, there are other better options. If you do decide to stay here, you should consider a room with a courtyard view, which is quieter and actually very pleasant."

"The hotel itself is beautiful. The hotel restaurant and breakfast are great. The location is perfect and you can easily walk to just about everything. My only recommendation would be to not attend the Magic Table event. For some reason, the hotel’s choice of menu for this event is subpar to say the least. the event is not hosted by the Andaz, but the food provided is. A complete waste of money."
