PB hotel design editorial

Three seventeenth-century merchant houses on the Keizersgracht, their dark-painted facades and ornate baroque gables pressed shoulder-to-shoulder against the canal, form the physical shell of Canal House — a property that has always understood Amsterdam's Golden Age architecture as a design asset rather than a constraint to work around. The conversion brought together a run of patrician interiors whose original plasterwork ceilings, carved wooden paneling, and wide-plank oak floors were left structurally intact, then worked against through a scheme of deliberate chromatic tension: walls painted near-black, purple velvet throw cushions and bedcovers layered over white linen, and exposed seventeenth-century ceiling beams painted dark to flatten rather than celebrate their age. The bar is where this collision of periods is most legible — gilded Rococo plasterwork overhead, brushed-steel bar stools with violet upholstered seats below, the counter lit from beneath in purple neon while gilt-framed mirrors multiply the effect across lacquered black walls. The restaurant works a similar trick with heavy cluster pendants in black-lacquered steel suspended beneath original decorative cornicing, gray banquettes carrying purple scatter cushions, and a shaggy amber carpet anchoring the room in something warmer. In the twenty-three rooms, grasscloth wallcovering and original timber structural beams provide the texture, while the palette — consistently aubergine, charcoal, and muted gray — gives the whole property a nocturnal consistency that suits the canal light filtering through the tall Dutch windows.

"This hotel has an outstanding location right by a canal and very close to shopping, major attractions, and a wide variety of restaurants. Upon arrival, guests are welcomed with a warm non‑alcoholic drink and invited to relax in the lobby while the staff take care of the check‑in, which creates a calm and pleasant first impression. The hotel features a dark color palette throughout, which could feel a bit moody to some, but we found it elegant, stylish, and cozy. The lobby bar is beautiful and serves excellent drinks and cocktails, prepared by friendly and professional staff. The only downside was that the waiting time for drinks in the bar was quite long. T he breakfast restaurant follows the same dark interior style and is very attractive. Breakfast was very good and clearly above average for this part of Europe, where hotel breakfasts often tend to be rather simple. The room itself was spacious, comfortable, and beautifully decorated. As with many older buildings in Amsterdam, there are quite a few stairs. Although the hotel does have an elevator, reaching it requires navigating some steps up and down. For this reason, the hotel may not be ideal for guests with mobility issues. However, if this is not a concern, the hotel is absolutely recommendable. Overall, I was very satisfied with my stay and would definitely book this hotel again."

"Great location but definitely not worth the price!! The rooms were ok if you like showering in the room with no privacy and the toilet being in a small cupboard. As for the breakfast it is a continental breakfast with hardly any options and not worth €21. If you want cooked eggs on toast it is extra cost €13. Which we didn’t find out until we checked out as they never said! Service was also too slow we gave up!! Overall wouldn’t recommend!! Also don’t be fooled by the different name of rooms on Expedia and other websites I thought I had upgraded turns out it’s just got a different name and an increased price"

"A really genuine boutique hotel decked out in purple accents created a lovely environment. Great service during check-in, as I got there early and waited a bit for the room to be ready. I was given a delicious tea and spent time in the garden. A real spacious garden that is worth visiting to take in the beauty. The room was great, nothing like a warm bath to ease the aches from a long flight. An especially comfortable bed helped, too. 5 out of 5 for me. I’m already looking forward to another visit!"
