PB hotel design editorial

At the confluence of the Amstel river and the Nieuwe Herengracht, a red-brick château of Dutch Renaissance Revival architecture has anchored Amsterdam's waterfront since 1896. Designed by the architect A. L. van Gendt — who also gave the city the Concertgebouw — the building that houses De L'Europe Amsterdam commands its canal corner with stepped gables, arched dormers, and a mansard roof punctuated by decorative ironwork finials, its terrace extending over the water on a floating platform of white-canopied tables. A renovation completed in 2018, led by interior designer Marjolein Loof, deepened the hotel's conversation with Dutch Golden Age culture without retreating into pastiche: 111 rooms and suites draw on a warm palette of tobacco, terracotta, and sandy linen, with beds framed by woven fabric canopies suspended from dark-stained timber, Delftware blue-and-white ceramic lamps standing sentinel on walnut nightstands. The attic-floor rooms, their white-painted structural trusses left fully exposed beneath steep dormer windows, carry the atmosphere of a well-appointed Amsterdam canal house rather than a grand hotel floor. Downstairs, the brasserie Freddy's unfolds across a terracotta-and-cream chequered floor beneath coffered ceilings painted sage, its rattan-panelled walls and spiral-barley bar columns nodding toward mid-century Dutch café culture. The fine-dining restaurant Flore takes a darker, more considered register — brass-framed wine towers floor to ceiling, ceiling panels painted with cloud-scattered skies in direct homage to the luminous skyscapes of Jacob van Ruisdael, connecting this Victorian waterfront palace to the pictorial tradition that built Amsterdam's confidence in the first place.

"We had a wonderful stay at Hotel De L’Europe in Amsterdam. From the moment we arrived, the service stood out Jordan in particular was incredibly welcoming and went above and beyond to make sure we had the best experience. He was knowledgeable, attentive, and delivered truly top-tier hospitality. The hotel itself offers multiple dining options, which was a huge plus being able to enjoy different cuisines without leaving the property added so much ease to our stay. Our junior suite overlooking the canal was beautiful, and the location is unbeatable right in the heart of the city while still feeling refined and comfortable. The bedding was also a highlight: the down pillows, comforter, and mattress struck the perfect balance firm but very comfortable, which made for excellent sleep. Overall, this is a hotel that delivers both luxury and warmth. We would absolutely stay here again."

"Our experience at the hotel was absolutely amazing. They were so friendly and accommodating. We checked in at around 11 am and the room was ready within 2 hours, well before 3. They provided nice water resistant jackets that were so fitting. The doorman Jordan is so sweet and funny. Definitely someone to chat with if you have the chance. We only stayed for one night, but wish we stayed for more!"

"Amazing location and outstanding hotel. The conscierge team was very knowledgeable and the drivers and private cars and boat cruise activities were outstanding and well coordinated for a seamless trip. Dinner reservations and recommendations were also handled well. Best team of professionals with a friendly bell and door staff greeting you each time we returned to the hotel. The hotel bellhop and door staff at the.hotel were engaging, always asking about your excursions, your day and experience was with a smile. We will be back."
