PB hotel design editorial

At the corner where Rokin meets Dam Square, a dark brick neo-Gothic tower with a conical turret has anchored Amsterdam's most civic address since 1897. The building, originally constructed as offices and long associated with Gassan Diamonds — whose ground-floor boutique still operates beneath the hotel's arched stone base — was converted into Hotel TwentySeven when it opened in 2018, bringing just 27 rooms across eight floors to one of the most watched corners in the Dutch capital. The decision to keep the room count so deliberately low gives the property a members-club density, with each room treated as a distinct interior exercise rather than a repeating module. The interiors, designed by Gilles & Boissier collaborator Eric Kuster and his studio Metropolitan Luxury, push deep into maximalist territory: floor-to-ceiling tufted velvet headboards backlit in amber, herringbone-parquet floors beneath custom geometric rugs in tobacco and sage, brocade wallcoverings offset against quilted satin throws. The palette moves between burnt copper, graphite, and old gold, with mirrored nightstands and crystal lamp bases adding a theatricality that suits the building's Victorian confidence without deferring to it. In the restaurant, gold velvet banquettes curve around white-clothed tables beneath large-format fashion photography mounted like Old Master portraits, while illuminated wine cabinets in steel and glass run the length of the opposite wall — a room that understands mood as a design material in its own right.

"What a treat. We stayed for 2 nights over valentines. The service from check in to check out was amazing. Every single staff member could not do enough for you! Highly recommend"

"We recently stayed only one night as a treat to ourselves at the end of a week in Europe. Wow, what a treat it was! Located right in Dam Square, one block from the M52 metro stop, the location cannot be beat. The view from our 4th floor suite was Dam Square, all the view, none of the noise (the soundproofing is impeccable). This hotel is known for its outstanding service and attention to every detail. We were greeted by a friendly check-in agent, a concierge and shown the features of our suite by one of their butlers. I informed them the day before that we might arrive a little before check in time so they expedited the cleaning and preparation of our suite, allowing us to check in 90 min early with no wait. My Hilton Honors Diamond status was recognized by complementary breakfast up to 45 EUR pp (I’ll get back to that experience in a moment). The suite was over-the-top with luxuries and amenities featuring a dedicated foyer with coat hooks and a sliding door dividing it and the guest bathroom from the rest of the suite. All lighting, climate control and privacy are controlled on an iPad, one on the wall, one on the nightstand. The bed and linens are sumptuous. The decor cannot be described other than elaborate and well thought out. The main bathroom featured a double vanity, deep soaking jetted tub for 2, a 2 person herbal steam shower and more luxury toiletries than 2 people could possibly use in a night. Both bathrooms featured an electronic bidet with an automatic lid, water warmer and a dryer. We didn’t feel like a big dinner so we met 3 friends in the bar. We ate light bites and had several drinks in the warm, intimate setting of the bar. The staff were friendly especially a recent addition to their team, Luca. Breakfast the next morning served by another friendly team member, Daisy was beyond anything we have ever experienced. The big breakfast was like a buffet served at our table beginning with a super-fruit shot and amuse bouche. Next course was baskets of warm bread and pastry serviced with meats, cheese and spreads. The main course was an egg dish. The event was finished with 2 sweet indulgences, all accompanied by fresh squeezed juice, tea and/or coffee of your choice. There was so much good food that I felt embarrassed by our meager appetites, leaving so much waste. It was excellent in every way and an experience neither of us will forget. This place is expensive but if it is within your means or you have Honors rewards to use, it will be a treat you will never forget. I wish we could have stayed longer and hope we’ll have the opportunity to return."

"We have traveled extensively in our lives and have stayed in beautiful hotels around the world. Hotel Twentyseven is in a class by itself. It’s an exquisite boutique hotel which exceeds expectations at every opportunity. Location, perfect. Lobby, restaurant, all common areas, truly beautiful. Plus…a luxurious deco bar that will just make you smile. And we haven’t even commented on the rooms. Exquisite! I’m not sure we stopped smiling our entire stay. We recommend them unconditionally."

"I booked a two-night stay in a Junior Suite using Hilton Honors points, equivalent to approximately $1,800 per night. I also requested that my child be accommodated in the room if she ended up travelling with us (this was uncertain at the time of booking, but I asked in advance). The hotel responded “sure,” but advised that to accommodate my child they would require an upgrade to the next room category at €133 per night, plus an extra bed at €125 per night. In total, they wanted €516 just to allow my child to stay with us. I understand hotels charge for extras, but there is a limit. This pricing is excessive and completely unreasonable. Charging hundreds of euros for a child to stay in a room is unacceptable by any standard. I booked through Hilton.com. While I understand this property may not be directly operated by Hilton, it is disappointing that Hilton allows such questionable hotels on its platform. If this is the experience, it seriously undermines trust in the brand. If you want to be overcharged in true Dutch style, this is your hotel."
