PB hotel design editorial

Two mid-century brick buildings in Amsterdam's Binnenstad, connected and reimagined by Amsterdam-based studio Sjoerd ter Haar Architecten, give Kimpton De Witt its quietly confident street presence — dark Dutch brickwork, a curved glass canopy marking the entrance, and a living wall threaded with pink neon that signals something more irreverent than the neighbourhood's canal-house vernacular typically permits. Inside, the interiors by Amsterdam practice &Rosas navigate the gap between historic fabric and contemporary appetite with considerable skill. Upper-floor rooms in the roof structure expose original white-painted timber trusses — triangulated rafters left bare above channelled velvet headboards, geometric wool rugs in blue and cream, and floral-printed accent chairs that carry the property's signature cobalt thread through 274 rooms across eight floors. The restaurant deploys a warmer register: herringbone oak flooring, white subway tile, amber shell chairs at the bar counter, and Verner Panton-style mushroom table lamps lending the dining room the relaxed confidence of a well-funded neighbourhood brasserie. The contrast arrives downstairs, where the hotel's bar shifts register entirely — red leather banquettes curving through a teal-lacquered room lit by neon geometry and metallic wallcoverings, closer in atmosphere to a late-night Milanese club than an Amsterdam brown café. The range is deliberate: De Witt is a hotel comfortable holding multiple moods within a single address.

"This hotel is right next to central station. The staff are so friendly and welcoming. The breakfast service was exceptional. The rooms well appointed with even a yoga mat. The beds were comfortable and we highly recommend."

"I love this hotel. The check in is always warm and friendly. The staff here seem genuinely nice. The rooms are modern and well equipped with large comfortable beds. The bathrooms, usually on the smaller side, have good walk in showers with great pressure and nice toiletries. They have a social hour with complementary wine and beer each day for an hour. The lobby area has numerous comfortable places to sit. The hotel has a great cocktail bar attached to the hotel. They sell amazing cocktails and it is frequently visited by non hotel guests. Breakfast is nice with reasonable choice and quality. The a la acre options are nicer than the buffet in my opinion. Location is very central for Amsterdam. Under 10 mins from Central station and close good transport links. There is lots to do within walking distance and a tram stop just outside if you want to travel further. I habe stayed here at least 10 times now and always look forward to returning. I have stayed elsewhere in Amsterdam but this place is my favourite."

"I am from San Francisco where Kimpton hotels started and I have stayed in several of them over the years as you can count on their quality and uniqueness. This was a major disappointment where my wife and I stayed for five nights. To be fair here are the pros and cons. PROS: Very helpful and nice staff…well trained. Very good location as it is very close to most tourist attractions and the train station. The lobby and common areas were large and nicely appointed. CONS: Very small rooms so hard to fit two suitcases. Bathroom had a single 6” wide shelf so difficult for toiletry kits. Bathroom door was glass that was occluded on the bottom panes but the glass panes at eye level were clear so you can see in to anyone on the toilet or taking a shower. Hallway ceiling heights were under 7’ high. Buffet breakfast was mediocre at best in selection and quality at a charge of 33 euros. Overall a disappointment for Kimpton brand but IHG bought Kimpton 10+ years ago so it is just not the same quality as before."

"Have been with IHG for almost 30 years and for the most part feel they are consistently just average properties with a few that truly rise to the occasion and up until recently the Staybridge Suites in Nashville held the number one spot across the board, but the Kimpton Dewitt may have just taken over that spot. Start to finish a beautiful property that is centrally located and is staffed front to back with some of the best in the industry. Thank you!"

"Our experience at the Kimpton De Witt in Amsterdam was top notch. This is a very well run hotel. The staff and services were excellent. The location is very central to everything in Amsterdam. It was a very quick walk with our luggage from the train station when we arrived. All of the staff were more than gracious and obviously well trained. We had breakfast included in our stay which was fantastic and started off our days of sightseeing in the best way. The room was spacious and had everything we needed for a luxurious stay. I wouldn't hesitate to go back!"
