PB hotel design editorial

Two mid-century brick buildings in Amsterdam's Binnenstad, connected and reimagined by Amsterdam-based studio Sjoerd ter Haar Architecten, give Kimpton De Witt its quietly confident street presence — dark Dutch brickwork, a curved glass canopy marking the entrance, and a living wall threaded with pink neon that signals something more irreverent than the neighbourhood's canal-house vernacular typically permits. Inside, the interiors by Amsterdam practice &Rosas navigate the gap between historic fabric and contemporary appetite with considerable skill. Upper-floor rooms in the roof structure expose original white-painted timber trusses — triangulated rafters left bare above channelled velvet headboards, geometric wool rugs in blue and cream, and floral-printed accent chairs that carry the property's signature cobalt thread through 274 rooms across eight floors. The restaurant deploys a warmer register: herringbone oak flooring, white subway tile, amber shell chairs at the bar counter, and Verner Panton-style mushroom table lamps lending the dining room the relaxed confidence of a well-funded neighbourhood brasserie. The contrast arrives downstairs, where the hotel's bar shifts register entirely — red leather banquettes curving through a teal-lacquered room lit by neon geometry and metallic wallcoverings, closer in atmosphere to a late-night Milanese club than an Amsterdam brown café. The range is deliberate: De Witt is a hotel comfortable holding multiple moods within a single address.

"Despite the fantastic location and nice room, we had the worst check in experience when an inexperienced staff member incorrectly told us it would not be possible to check in due to my forename being different on my IHG account, despite having the booking confirmation. When I began to panic at the thought of being stranded in Amsterdam the staff member changed her mind about the name and also decided then not to consult a manager like we asked her to. It was a strange and upsetting way for a staff member checking you in to behave and it ruined the start of our holiday."

"My husband and I had a 4 night stay at the Kimpton De Witt in September 2025, booking a King Premium Street view room. Spending the extra money on a larger room was certainly expensive but we felt well worth it. We arrived early in the morning off a flight all the way from Australia, looking greasy and haggard and we were immediately presented with bottled water by a very cheery friendly person on reception. They allowed us to check in early and therefore shower away our long flight so we were really happy about this. The room was very comfortable, sizable (compared to the base room types), although a bit of an awkward shape with the entry being a L shape hallway. The bathroom was funky and large and everything worked well. I did have to leave a note for housekeeping as the large bottle of body wash in the shower had a broken pump, this was fixed nicely but should have been noted before I had to say something about it. This was the only hiccup. The view from the room of the street was appreciated and it was not too noisy despite the room being street facing. The teabags in the room were of a nice quality and when we phoned the front desk to request more tea/UHT milk, they delivered a huge bag of them which was great! We did not eat at the hotel or experience the hotel breakfast so cannot comment on this. We would have had a drink in the hotel bar, but it was closed on 2 of the 4 nights we were there (closed Monday and Tuesdays). Location was fabulous, a short walk with suitcases from Amsterdam Centraal was very convenient, as are the tram stops out the front of the hotel. To be honest we didn't really hang out in the area, opting to walk to Jordaan or take a tram somewhere else to eat and shop. The Centraal area is very touristy and a bit grubby, and there are many more amazing restaurants, cafes and shopping in other areas."

"Excellent hotel in a great location in the heart of Amsterdam city. So my things like museums, restaurants and other landmarks were a 7-10 min walk from the hotel. Staff were incredibly helpful, kind and knowledgeable. Room was spacious, clean and well appointed. Food and drinks at Celia were delicious. Took a canal tour via the hotel boat and it was v fun and informative. A great hotel and one I would without hesitation stay at again,"

"This was an excellent choice for a long weekend. Literally five minutes from the central station and about the same to Dam Square. Hotel spotlessly clean and good air conditioning. The Super Lyan bar has brilliant cocktails and friendly staff and we enjoyed the excellent breakfast too- smoked salmon and yoghurt in particular were very high quality. But particular thanks to the superb front desk staff who were all friendly and knowledgeable especially Betina and Rafaella who sorted out a later checkout time when Eurostar cancelled my train . Always smiling and happy to help - and it felt that every single member of staff we encountered wanted us to enjoy our stay as much as possible. A true gem and I will be back soon"

"We stayed here for 5 nights in February and had a great time. The checkin was very good, the lady on reception was helpful and there were nice touches for the children. All staff were polite and helpful. The hotel decor was to our taste and the rooms were spacious and comfortable. The location was excellent for what we required, situated between Dam square and the train station on a road that ran parallel to Damrak. None of the activities or attractions we visited were more than 30 minutes walk away and if not keen on walking you could use the team."
