PB hotel design editorial

Facing the Oosterpark canal along one of Amsterdam's quieter residential boulevards, a substantial early-twentieth-century brick institution — its symmetrical facade and arched entrance portal more civic than domestic in character — was converted into Pillows Maurits at the Park, bringing the Dutch boutique chain's particular brand of considered comfort to a neighbourhood better known for local life than hotel tourism. The building's red brick and stone-banded exterior, visible through a canopy of mature lime trees in the images, carries the solidity of Amsterdam's municipal architecture tradition, the kind of structure that once housed a school or administrative body before hospitality found it. Inside, the design navigates the familiar tension between heritage fabric and contemporary finish with considerable confidence. The restaurant makes the most of the original structure's bones — exposed timber roof trusses, clerestory windows, and brick floor tiles preserved beneath a steel-and-glass partition system that divides the volume without diminishing it. The bar takes a warmer, more intimate direction: oak-panelled walls, leather banquette seating, marble-topped tables, and a cascade of trailing foliage overhead that softens the whole room into something closer to a garden than a lobby bar. Guestrooms are cooler and more controlled — ebonised headboards set against white panel-moulded walls, brass wall sconces, mid-century oak-framed armchairs, and cylindrical black bedside tables finished with a brass base — a palette that references Dutch modernism without quoting it too literally.

"A truly unique and luxurious experience from check-in to check-out. The hotel’s location is absolutely perfect, nestled in a very quiet and charming neighborhood, right next to a beautiful park and within a short walking distance of the tram station, making it incredibly easy to get anywhere in the city. The Spring restaurant is set in a breathtaking location overlooking the park and offers an exceptional dining experience, with some of the most delicious breakfast and dinner options I’ve had at a hotel. The room was beautiful, spacious, and impeccably clean. The amenities were excellent and thoughtfully selected. I especially loved the lovely little gifts and giveaways the team would leave in our room throughout our stay. It was such a thoughtful touch that added a personal and welcoming feel to the experience. The pillows team were incredibly accommodating, attentive, and friendly, and their genuine hospitality made the stay even more special. Overall, the level of service, attention to detail, and luxury were truly unmatched. Every little detail felt carefully considered, making this a memorable and exceptional stay. I would absolutely recommend this hotel to anyone looking for a refined and genuinely special experience."

"We had a truly wonderful stay at Pillow Grand Hotel, and it was almost entirely thanks to the incredible staff. From check-in to check-out, everyone we interacted with was warm, kind, and genuinely attentive. It wasn’t just polite service — it felt like they actually cared about making our stay special. We had a rocky start to our trip before we even arrived, but the team here more than made up for it. They were understanding, patient, and went out of their way to make sure the rest of our stay was smooth and enjoyable. That kind of thoughtfulness is rare, and it completely turned our trip around. A special thank you to Florine, Desiree, Azia and Beatriz, who stood out in particular for their kindness and excellent service, if I could name every single staff member who made our stay so memorable, I would, because everyone we encountered deserves recognition. By the end of our stay, we felt genuinely taken care of. Huge thanks to the entire staff for their hospitality- you made our trip memorable for all the right reasons. Highly recommend this hotel to anyone looking for a place that treats guests like family."

"Way beyond what your would expect for such an unassuming property. They have figured out how to have a staff that comes very close to anticipating your every need. Food service was completely awesome. Where else would you find a concierge that knew Amsterdam so well he and a friend produced a first class color map to help guide you. Staggering knowledge base. This was our second visit and we will positively be back next year."
