PB hotel design editorial

Facing the Oosterpark canal along one of Amsterdam's quieter residential boulevards, a substantial early-twentieth-century brick institution — its symmetrical facade and arched entrance portal more civic than domestic in character — was converted into Pillows Maurits at the Park, bringing the Dutch boutique chain's particular brand of considered comfort to a neighbourhood better known for local life than hotel tourism. The building's red brick and stone-banded exterior, visible through a canopy of mature lime trees in the images, carries the solidity of Amsterdam's municipal architecture tradition, the kind of structure that once housed a school or administrative body before hospitality found it. Inside, the design navigates the familiar tension between heritage fabric and contemporary finish with considerable confidence. The restaurant makes the most of the original structure's bones — exposed timber roof trusses, clerestory windows, and brick floor tiles preserved beneath a steel-and-glass partition system that divides the volume without diminishing it. The bar takes a warmer, more intimate direction: oak-panelled walls, leather banquette seating, marble-topped tables, and a cascade of trailing foliage overhead that softens the whole room into something closer to a garden than a lobby bar. Guestrooms are cooler and more controlled — ebonised headboards set against white panel-moulded walls, brass wall sconces, mid-century oak-framed armchairs, and cylindrical black bedside tables finished with a brass base — a palette that references Dutch modernism without quoting it too literally.

"Absolutely superb boutique luxury hotel in a gorgeous quiet part of Amsterdam close to town and right on the edge of a lovely park, which the hotel’s indoor/outdoor cafe spills into. Could not recommend it highly enough."

"We stayed at Pillows Grand Boutique Hotel Maurits At The Park in Amsterdam for our honeymoon, and truly loved our stay. The location is incredible, and while it may seem a bit further from the city center at first glance, it's actually in a quiet, non-touristy area right off a tram stop that gets you into the city center quickly (~10 min). The hotel itself is historical and full of character, while the rooms are modern and clean. The rooms are on the smaller side, but well done, with Diptyque amenities that were a nice touch. Each night, turndown service included a small surprise, and it was genuinely fun not knowing what it would be, a hand cream, face cream, a chocolate bar. Little details like that, combined with wonderful service throughout, made our honeymoon feel special. Multiple staff members checked in with us during our stay to see how things were going, and each time we returned to the hotel, someone would ask how our day was. It felt genuinely welcoming. I was also a bit worried going in about air conditioning, since we were traveling in July, but it was not an issue at all. The rooms stayed comfortably cool the entire stay, which was important to me and gave real peace of mind. One note for other travelers: we tried to rent bikes through the hotel, and the e-bikes are built for taller riders. My husband had no trouble, but I wasn't able to ride. Worth knowing ahead of time if you're planning to rent bikes, so you can look into alternate arrangements if needed. Downstairs, Fitz Bar was a real highlight. The mixologists know their craft, and it was a lot of fun to sit at the bar and watch them work. A wonderful stay with real character. Highly recommend."

"Absolutely beautiful hotel, well kept with very helpful, enthusiastic staff. Our garden facing room was beautiful. Location is in quieter area by a park but still very accessible to other areas by tram. Food was also excellent at the hotel restaurant. One of our, if not our favorite hotel stays ever."
