PB hotel design editorial

Twenty-five Golden Age canal houses strung along the Prinsengracht and Keizersgracht form the physical fabric of the Pulitzer Amsterdam — a concatenation of seventeenth and eighteenth-century merchant buildings, each with its own gabled roofline and structural logic, knitted together behind the facades into a single 225-room hotel. The exterior image makes the layering legible: ornate neck gables and bell gables in warm brick sit alongside a newer dark-brick infill volume whose flush contemporary windows mark where the property was extended, the whole terrace presenting a compressed history of Amsterdam domestic architecture from the canal's edge. Inside, Concrete Amsterdam handled the interiors, working against the temptation to impose uniformity on such heterogeneous source material. The guest rooms in the historic houses retain white-painted timber beams and steeply pitched attic ceilings, furnished with curved grey chaises, mustard velvet Louis XVI-style chairs, tufted blush ottomans, and saffron bed runners — an eclectic palette that flatters rather than fights the irregular geometry. Rooms in the newer wing swap exposed beams for generous picture windows directly onto the canal-side elms, the darker, more tailored headboards and warm rose curtains giving them a quieter register. The ground-floor bar, wrapped in near-black panelling with gilded mirrors and clusters of opaline globe pendants above a faceted brass counter, pulls toward thirties jazz-club glamour, while the garden restaurant unfolds under a steel-and-glass conservatory roof, cane bistro chairs and marble tops opening toward a walled garden thick with climbing greenery.

"We have stayed here on a number of occasions before and return because this is truly a 5 star hotel in a wonderful location, every room has its own character and the style of all the individual houses that have been combined to create this hotel has been wonderfully preserved. The staff are wonderful. They never walk past you without a smile and an acknowledgement. Every request is immediately dealt with, nothing is ever too much trouble. I unfortunately had an accident whilst in my room and cut myself. Within moments of my wife seeking help two security officers arrived with a first aid kit and provided welcome advice and assistance. Very highly recommended."

"Absolutely brilliant hotel. Made our stay in Amsterdam really special. Superb location, beautiful buildings, fantastic service and generally just a great vibe. The room was a good size, bed very comfortable and lovely marble bathroom. Breakfast too was really good. The hotel is in the heart of the nine streets area. Loads of little independent shops and food places. We also went out on the hotel’s beautiful ‘The Tourist’ boat on a cruise around the canals. Well worth doing. Lots of information from Captain Nils. Finally taken to the airport by super friendly Saiid who was just lovely. All in all a great hotel. They’ve got it just right👌well done Pulitzer👏👏👏"

"My stay was amazing from the very first minute. I was very well looked after throughout my visit. I would especially like to thank Elysia for her outstanding service. She gave me an incredibly warm welcome and was highly professional in her work. The entire hotel team was also very helpful and attentive. My stay exceeded all my expectations. The quality of the hotel, the staff, the service, and the food were all top-notch. I will definitely be returning in the future. Thank you all for such an amazing experience."

"A unique hotel, in a good location. For those who love an old style facility. A bit of a walk from public transportation, but the scenery worth the effort. Nice view of the canal."
