PB hotel design editorial

Few buildings in Amsterdam carry as much layered civic history as the one at Oudezijds Voorburgwal 197, where a complex of structures dating to the fifteenth century has served as a convent, the headquarters of the Dutch Admiralty, and the official city hall before becoming Sofitel Legend The Grand Amsterdam in 1992. The conversion preserved the building's ceremonial gravity — a cobbled inner courtyard reached through a brick archway, the canal facade presenting Dutch Renaissance brickwork of considerable solemnity — while threading 177 rooms through the warren of interconnected historic volumes. The hotel's private canal boat, named Paradis and visible moored outside in teak and white lacquer, captures the tone: formal but quietly pleasure-seeking. Inside, the interiors balance the weight of that history against a contemporary palette that runs warmer and more playful than the exterior suggests. Guest rooms deploy richly patterned wallcoverings — a bold crimson floral in one category, a deep damask in another — set against deep-pile burgundy carpeting and velvet chaises in slate blue, the effect closer to a Dutch Golden Age cabinet of curiosities than a conventional grand hotel room. The whisky bar takes a different register entirely, its mahogany back bar and globe pendant lights giving way to an illustrated ceiling mural of night sky, the patterned carpet stamped with stag motifs. The restaurant brings the scheme into the present with warm oak flooring, brass orbital pendants, and a lavender ceiling coffered in gold-lit reveals.

"Our stay at Sofitel the Grand, in the heart of Amsterdam, was 100% fantastic from our check in to check out."

"After more than 30 years of traveling around the world, this is the first time I find myself reviewing a 5-star hotel that, in reality, does not live up to its rating. The property is dated, poorly maintained, and far below the standards one would expect from this category. The rooms are plain and not particularly clean, while the minibar is practically empty. The bathroom is also disappointing, with very low-quality toiletries. Overall, there is a complete lack of the comfort and attention to detail that should define a true 5-star experience. The only positive aspect is the staff: at breakfast, Florin stands out for his professionalism and friendliness, and the reception team is also helpful and competent. A disappointing experience and not in line with expectations."

"What an amazing stay from start to finish. I can not emphasize the quality of the staff at this property & how accommodating they all were. Our Junior Suite was well appointed & quite spacious for Amsterdam/Europe. Location: Super central, close to the palace, museums & rld. Totally walkable. Definitely stay there. Will be our goto when travelling to Amsterdam."

"Fantastic location – everything is an easy walk. Service at this hotel is special, everyone operates at a high standard. From Andrei who checked us in to Jonathan the Concierge (he knows his stuff) to the lady in the bar (lives in Rotterdam), the French woman in the restaurant and the gentleman who controls the restaurants (what a character). The hotel is admittedly on the tired side, and a renovation has already commenced (albeit there is impact on guests). Having said that, the charm of the hotel and the size of the room work well add the overall experience. Every now and again there is a bit of a drain smell that wafts into the room but its brief and an open window resolves it quickly. The red light district is a couple of hundred metres down the road, but it doesn’t negatively impact the experience in any way. There are lots of food options and coffee shops nearby (speak to Jonathan). A recommendation is “Die Laaste Krummel” for breakie/ coffee/ cake. Also, the canal tour is a must. There is a good sauna and indoor pool if you have time and the main bar nice and you can order wine off any of the restaurant menus. Checkout was efficient. We caught an Uber to the airport and it cost us less than 30 Euros."
