PB hotel design editorial

Two landmark buildings on Dam Square — a former telephone exchange and a nineteenth-century bank — were stitched together and converted into W Amsterdam, which opened in 2015 across 238 rooms spread over the two connected structures. The exterior image confirms the tension the project had to resolve: a mid-century brick-and-glass curtain wall facade, monumental in its grid of red brick piers and floor-height glazing, sits directly opposite the Royal Palace of Amsterdam, its reflection caught in the hotel's own windows. Dutch practice Concrete Architectural Associates handled the conversion and interiors, threading a contemporary sensibility through buildings whose bones were emphatically not designed for hospitality. Inside, the rooms carry the Concrete signature with confidence — articulated brass pendant lighting in angular configurations, teal-green wool carpeting, burnished gold case furniture, and Marshall speakers positioned as objects rather than amenities. The suite images show a recurring motif: a freestanding polished brass cylinder housing the bathroom, dropped into the room like a piece of industrial sculpture, framed by the original tall windows looking out over Amsterdam's canal-ring rooftops. The rooftop pool stretches along the building's edge with the Royal Palace's copper-green statuary and the Nieuwe Kerk's Gothic spire arranged on the skyline behind it — a view that no interior designer could have specified. The top-floor restaurant continues the brass-and-green palette through curved banquette seating and stacked circular pendant fixtures, the open kitchen given the same visual weight as the room itself.

"We came to Amsterdam to celebrate our anniversary and, as loyal Marriott guests and true W lovers, W Amsterdam was our first choice. From the moment we arrived, everything felt like a wow. The room setup, the upgrade, the welcome — flawless. Huge thanks to W Insiders Melanie & Ignacia for making it extra special. We truly felt at home, away from home. Special appreciation to GM Mr. Oliver Kesseler for his warm and gracious touch. The location is unbeatable — right in the heart of the city, surrounded by stylish cafés, great restaurants, shopping spots, and designer boutiques. Everything is within walking distance, including Central Station, and the tram is just steps away, making our stay incredibly convenient. For our anniversary dinner, we chose The Duchess, located in the Bank building where we stayed — and it was just as exceptional. The team was incredibly welcoming and professional, the food was delicious, and the chocolate bomb was an unforgettable finale. An unforgettable stay — we’ll definitely be back very soon. W Amsterdam team — you turned our anniversary into a full-on wow moment. Thank you ✨"

"Our Check in experience was horrendous. The initial person we dealt with was very poorly trained and gave us misinformation. The hotel is undergoing renovations and is a bit of mess. The management staff is attentive and our issues were resolved but it took quite some time for a resolution to occur. The "lounge" on the top floor is not worth the effort. The staff is officious and getting a drink takes quite some time. However, the view is quite nice. The hotel breakfast is terrific, and the morning staff couldn't be more attentive and pleasant."

"Awful hotel. Rooms are designed super weird, zero thought put into anything. Service is bad from front desk, management, and housekeeping. Front desk offers to email invoice instead of print, and then never emails it, and they don’t upload it to view in the Bonvoy app. They don’t award Bonvoy points properly and then block your email address when you inquire about missing points. Only positive is the room service and breakfast people are great. But I don’t recommend this hotel. Much better options for much lower prices nearby."

"The reception tried to cheat us on arrival with different room rate that in the reservation and re-confirmed it. Only when I found a proof of previous price, they gave up. Checking took around 15 minutes. The staff completely lost, unprofessional. Dirty room, very small. Later we were cheated with another surprise- upgraded room was not upgraded for free, but tried to use my voucher for incorrect upgrade. Restaurant, the ambience music resembles more brothel house. The service almost not existing, food so so. Absolutely the place to be avoided at all costs."

"As a Lifetime Platinum Elite member, my husband booked a suite at this hotel for my mother/daughter trip across Europe. It was close to the city center and as a Platinum Elite member he expects a certain level of service. This review will be a really long one if I start mentioning everything but I decided to write this to share that our experience has been very disappointing. The check in/reception could use better training and basically get their stuff together. We were also promised a suite with a city view and I’ll post the picture of what we got. The hotel is in an old bank (which I didn’t know) but gives a very dark and concrete feel (starting with the reception area). We only have 2 nights here thankfully but I will never stay at this hotel. There are many better options (which I’ve stayed at the last two times we have visited Amsterdam)."
