PB hotel design editorial

Few buildings in The Hague carry the civic weight of the former Tweede Kamer annex on Turfmarkt, a monumental sandstone structure whose Art Deco-inflected facade — rusticated pilasters, carved figural reliefs, a rounded corner tower — was built to project parliamentary authority rather than hospitality. That building now houses voco The Hague, IHG's premium lifestyle brand, in a conversion that has kept the honey-coloured limestone exterior largely intact while reconfiguring the interior around 206 rooms across multiple floors. The interiors navigate the expected tension between institutional bones and contemporary hotel comfort with uneven but often effective results. Guestrooms deploy oak flooring, upholstered headboards in deep teal velvet or warm grey bouclé, and a wardrobe unit styled as a brass-cornered steamer trunk — a travel-heritage gesture that sits comfortably within the voco brand language. Carved wooden decorative panels above the beds and woven rattan-effect screens flanking bedside sconces warm what could easily have read as corporate. The all-day dining space leans biophilic, its curved bar clad in emerald green mosaic tile beneath a suspended ceiling of preserved moss and trailing plants, the palette considerably fresher than the building's exterior suggests. The cocktail bar moves in the opposite direction entirely — midnight blue lacquer, brass column cladding, and overhead gantry shelving that carries the low-lit drama of a 1930s ocean liner lounge, an atmosphere the building's own era earns without apology.

"The hotel is clean although after a 7 day stay the floor in the room wasn’t cleaned once. The bedding wasn’t changed either. The servicing of the room was minimal but it did take place every other day. I ordered a birthday cake which was €12.50 and was even asked for a name of the recipient. All that arrived on the day was a small puck sized chocolate molten cake that was lukewarm. No candle or name. Looked like it came from the restaurant as a dessert option. The staff are friendly and the bed comfortable but only king size in the suites. The balcony is a nice option. The amenities are very minimal."

"This was our first experience at the VOCO and all went extremely well. The hotel is very well positioned and is just a 5 minute walk from the shops. The breakfast was plentiful and the restaurant/bar were very well managed and drinks and food were up to the expected standard. We would definitely return to the VOCO."

"voco The Hague is located in a striking, original building and enjoys a truly excellent central location, making it a great base for exploring the city. The hotel has a lot of character and a pleasant overall atmosphere. The only downside was the breakfast, which felt very standard and somewhat uninspiring, with little that stood out or surprised. Fine, but not quite at the level one might expect given the hotel’s otherwise strong positioning. Overall, a solid stay thanks to the location and setting, with room for improvement on the breakfast experience."
