PB hotel design editorial

Wynyard Quarter's transformation from working industrial waterfront into Auckland's most considered urban precinct found its clearest architectural expression in the Park Hyatt Auckland, a six-storey building designed by Architectus that mirrors the geometry and materiality of the harbour it fronts. Seen from the marina at dusk, the copper-toned glazed facade catches the last light off the Waitematā in a way that makes the building feel less like a hotel and more like a very large, very well-appointed yacht club — an effect that is entirely deliberate. The 195-room property, which opened in 2019, was designed to anchor the quarter's public realm as much as to serve its guests, with ground-floor restaurants and a marina-edge terrace that Auckland's own residents use as freely as anyone checking in. The interiors, developed by New York studio Chhada Siembieda, work a palette of walnut timber, grey-green stone, and tan leather that runs consistently from the restaurant — where a slatted timber ceiling meets dark stone bar surrounds and deep leather banquettes — through to the guest rooms, where geometric wool rugs in charcoal, red, and ochre reference Māori tukutuku weaving patterns. Articulated brass wall sconces with globe pendants light the headboard walls, and wide-plank hardwood floors anchor each room with a warmth that the harbour views beyond the balcony glazing counterbalance in cool grey-blue. The lap pool deck, wrapped in dark timber decking and white powder-coated loungers, extends the building's horizontal language right to the water's edge.

"This was the fifth stop on our long awaited round the world trip which was organised with help from Turquoise who put together an amazing itinerary. We stayed for 2 nights so I could have a birthday in the city before flying off across the dateline to do it all again in Rarotonga! We arrived after a short and scenic ferry ride from Waiheke island and were able to walk from the ferry terminal (about 10 minutes on the level) with our wheeled luggage. We had booked a room with balcony but were offered a free upgrade to a marina view without a balcony which we took. The view from our room was amazing over the marina and towards the Skytower. Classic Auckland view! We had a large bathroom with floor to ceiling window and "bath with a view", separate shower and twin sinks. The room had a large seating area, walk in wardrobe and king bed. It was very, modern, clean and well designed. Location was great and we could walk to the Skytower, marina and local restaurants and shops. We slept with the floor to ceiling window open (there was a protective safety barrier and bug screen) and enjoyed the fresh sea air. On my birthday we ordered a room service breakfast that was huge and delicious and admired the fabulous view before setting off to the airport..."

"My first stay at the Park Hyatt exceeded all expectations. The hotel staff were so welcoming and helpful throughout my visit. The room was sparkling clean and the bed was very comfortable. A huge shoutout to the team in the Waka room where we had our meeting, the food was amazing and the service was top-notch. I couldn't find a single fault. I’ll definitely be back!"

"We stayed here for a Conference for (4) days and enjoyed stunning views from our room over the Marina. Highly recommend one of these rooms especially with this view as they’re super roomy, extremely well laid out and the large balcony is a bonus. We really enjoyed our breakfast each morning in The Pantry and Luka took great care of us he was very attentive and friendly."
