PB hotel design editorial

Auckland's Viaduct Harbour was reshaped for the 1999 and 2003 America's Cup defences, transforming a working port into the city's most animated waterfront precinct. The Sofitel Auckland Viaduct Harbour was built directly into that reclaimed marina edge, its four-storey facade of grey composite cladding and full-height glazed bays running parallel to the berths where racing yachts still tie up steps from the lobby. The building's horizontal banding and cantilevered cornice lines carry a faint nautical register without leaning into the obvious — the massing is clean, commercial-contemporary in origin, given warmth by the proximity of masts and water rather than by any architectural flourish. Inside, the 165 rooms and suites draw on the Sofitel house palette filtered through a maritime restraint: tufted velvet bed benches in dove grey, dark leather-panelled headboards with warm timber ceiling reveals, paisley scatter cushions in teal against crisp white linen. The restaurant sits at waterline, sheer linen curtains diffusing harbour light across banquette seating and curved lounge chairs in tobacco leather, Scandi-influenced timber dining chairs providing a lighter counterpoint. The indoor pool on the lower level takes the most theatrical turn — a star-field ceiling in black mosaic, a large figurative artwork anchoring the far wall, the gym visible through full-height glass on one side. It is an interior that works harder than the exterior promises, and the harbour view from upper-floor suites, with the CBD skyline framed beyond the marina, makes the address feel genuinely earned.

Sofitel Auckland Viaduct Harbour Reviews

"This is a very good Sofitel by world standards.  It is not as good as Park Hyatt nearby but the price at Sofitel is much lower than PH so the comparison is not fair; for its price range there is a lot to like about this Sofitel.  The hotel was 100% full for our dates so I did not expect a suite upgrade as Accor Diamond, but they gave us a small upgrade anyway.  I am not a fan of hotels in U-shape because of lack of privacy but otherwise our room was nice. I try to avoid Accor lounges in France because they are low quality and overcrowded (France being home base for Accor) but as a general rule, the farther away we get from France, Accor lounges improve.  NZ is far enough.  The lounge was stylish and quiet with enough food for small meal.  Drinks were not the best but the rum from St.Croix (USVI) was nice.  The one negative is that the lounge only opens at 14:30; even if we don't want breakfast in the lounge I find value in having a lounge available in the morning or mid day. Breakfast was equally quiet as the lounge despite the hotel being full which was unexpected and it was a nice combo of menu + buffet.  I might be interested in staying at Sofitel SO next time to compare but for sure Sofitel Viaduct Harbour is a fine choice."

"We had a club room and chose valet parking. When you first arrive it seems quite dark and soulless and there isn’t a conventional reception. Our room wasn’t quite ready so we went to the cafe, which was noisy, so we opted for lunch in the restaurant which was really fresh and nice with friendly service. Our room was small but a harbour view with a Juliette balcony. As others have said, the aircon controls are very iffy and the rooms are freezing, we opened the balcony door for a bit of warmth. The room and bathroom were clean and the bed was really comfortable. We checked out early on the last day and had breakfast, the staff there were really nice and the food was pretty good. During our stay we did try the club lounge and that was also good with various wines and some hot meals as well as canapés. After we checked out we were billed for a room bar charge in error, this was disappointing as they didn’t email us we just saw it on our banking app, it took two emails and a customer services chat to finally get a refund. We would stay here again, but it’s not the best Sofitel we have visited."

"We only stayed one night but it was so memorable. The beautiful staff from the La Maree restaurant for both dinner and breakfast were remarkable. They made my family including my 3 month old feed welcome and appreciated. Special shout out to Winston from the Breakfast service."

"We love this Hotel , the staff are amazing and are so welcoming and friendly towards us which makes staying there a special place. We really appreciate the upgrade due to our Accor Diamond membership and the use of the Club with its high quality food and fine French Red wine. We stay in a lot of Hotels with Executive lounges and the lounge at this Hotel is the best ! The breakfast too is top notch and up there with the best as well. Jimmy makes the world’s best coffee , we will attach a photo with the decoration he did on my cappuccino which was very impressive ! Look forward to our stay again in March already."
