PB hotel design editorial

Anchored within Auckland's SkyCity entertainment complex on Federal Street, at the foot of the Sky Tower that defines the city's skyline, The Grand by SkyCity opened in 2016 as a 316-room property designed to bring genuine hotel architecture to what had previously been a casino-led precinct. Warren and Mahoney, the Christchurch-founded practice with deep roots in New Zealand civic design, handled the architecture, producing a tower whose curtain-wall facade and dark structural framing give the building a composed, contemporary presence against the CBD streetscape. The entrance sequence — a drum-shaped revolving door cased in brushed brass set beneath a deep cantilevered canopy of glass and steel — signals the register the property aims for: polished without being ostentatious. Inside, the rooms carry warm-toned oak wall panelling behind leather-upholstered headboards, dark velvet throws, and articulated steel task lamps that give each space a studied, residential quality rather than anonymous corporate comfort. Mustard and olive accent cushions against grey carpet ground the palette in a way that feels considered rather than generic. The restaurant visible in the images — Gusto at the Grand — pulls in a different direction entirely, its double-height volume animated by ring chandeliers threaded with trailing botanicals, long terracotta leather banquettes, bentwood chairs, and a visible kitchen that gives the room the energy of a serious European brasserie. The indoor lap pool, lined in dark tile with timber louvred walls and cove lighting, delivers a spa atmosphere that is genuinely calm.

"Just had breakfast on the terrace. Food was cold. All of it. Complained to 2 people and manager suggested an alternative restaurant tomorrow. Not good enough"

"We stayed in several cities in New Zealand, but saved The Grand in Aukland for the final two nights of our nine day stay. It was a wonderful treat. The hotel is wonderful and the location is perfect for walking to many attractions in the city."

"Absolutely appalling customer service. I stepped outside for a cigarette this morning and accidentally picked up the room’s electricity card instead of my key card. When I realised my mistake, I went straight to reception and explained that my friend was asleep in the room and I had no way of contacting her. I simply asked to be let back into the room. The receptionist refused to help and left me standing outside in the cold. I became so upset that I ended up in tears, yet there was no empathy, reassurance or attempt to help me. Instead of trying to find a solution, I was met with a complete lack of compassion and customer care. I understand hotels have security procedures, but there has to be a better way of dealing with genuine guests than leaving them stranded outside. The way I was treated was unacceptable. I’ve never experienced such poor customer service in a hotel. The lack of common sense, empathy and professionalism was shocking. I certainly won’t be staying here again and wouldn’t recommend this hotel to anyone."

"I had a business meeting which brought me to Auckland. This property has a great location as it is right next to SkyCity Hotel which offers a casino, the famous Sky Tower and all kind of other activities. I was also able to easily walk to the harbor and on my way grab some excellent coffee to enjoy on my walk. I arrived super early in the morning from California and the wonderful staff got me checked in early since I did arrive on a Monday so I lucked out. The room was clean and had everything I needed to relax and prep for my meeting. I would recommend this location for business or families as I have a child and he would have loved being walking distance to SkyCity and the harbor."

"Had a fantastic stay! Initially booked at another hotel, decided to move as we didn’t really like our stay. Was recommended to stay at The Grand instead and it was nothing but amazing! Staff were super helpful, knowledgeable of the surrounding, room was clean, location was very central and close to everywhere. Definitely will re-book for when we return to Auckland :)"
