PB hotel design editorial

The white-painted Victorian facade pressed against the shore of Lake Wakatipu has been a Queenstown landmark since Albert Eichardt first opened his hotel on this waterfront site in 1871. Eichardt's Private Hotel today holds just five suites and a handful of private lake apartments — an intimate scale that feels almost perverse given the prime position on the Marine Parade, directly facing the Remarkables across the water. The original building's classical parapet and wrought-iron balustrades survive intact, while a sculptural white addition to the right, its faceted panels cut at sharp angles, signals the property's contemporary apartment wing without apology. Inside, the interiors carry the atmosphere of a well-appointed high-country lodge rather than a conventional hotel — possum-fur throws draped across deeply upholstered beds, botanical wallpaper in silvered greens, tufted linen ottomans, and dark timber nightstands that suggest a gentleman's library rather than a design hotel. Suites facing the lake open through full-height bronze-framed glazing onto balconies where the Remarkables fill the entire horizon, gas fireplaces set flush into painted panelling offering warmth against the mountain cold. The Grille restaurant extends this sensibility to the waterfront edge, its floor-to-ceiling sliding glass walls dissolving the boundary between the dark interior — pendant lights, slate floors, leather banquettes — and the brilliant lake and mountain panorama beyond.

"One of top 3 best hotels I have stayed, that's counting many Waldorf Astoria, Ritz Carlton, St. Regis, SLH, and many others. From reception, to concierge, to bar tender, service is impeccable. It made our anniversary trip so much memorable. And the location is impeccable, right in front of Lake Wakatipu in the middle of Queenstown downtown. If you're in Queenstown, be sure to book Eichardt's. You won't regret it."

"Eichardt’s is hard to miss — a stately, historic building situated perfectly in the center of downtown Queenstown facing the lake. Elegant, both inside and out, the hotel is small, intimate and comfortable. My wife and I spent three terrific days at Eichardt’s towards the conclusion of our journey through New Zealand and found it to be exceptional. The staff was easy to communicate with before our arrival, unbelievably responsive, and helped us arrange dinner reservations and an excursion. On arrival, we were shown to our suite, which consisted of a beautifully furnished separate living room, bedroom and large bathroom, with a complimentary minibar, drinks (alcoholic and non-alcoholic) and snacks. Our room did not have a lake view, but it was consequently very quiet, which I value, especially in a busy and noisy downtown like Queenstown. Guests are invited to enjoy a common living room 24/7 with a view of the plaza and lake, where pre-dinner cocktails and hors douvres are served daily, and delicious cookies are served fresh daily. The included cooked-to-order breakfast is excellent. Staff arranged for us to have dinner in the cozy bar, rather than in the restaurant, and the food was delicious. An off-site gym is made available to guests that want to work out. The staff is very welcoming, attentive, responsive and professional. I doubt there is any hotel comparable to Eichardt’s in all of Queenstown. It was very difficult to depart when the time came. If it is not already apparent, we loved our stay and recommend Eichardt’s highly."

"This was the most wonderful hotel in a great location. Service was amazing. Katherine looked after us brilliantly also Sarah. Rohit was great in the restaurant. All the other people working there were amazing. Pre dinner drinks and canapés every night. Whisky and wine included. Lovely sitting in the private lounge. Spectacular views over the lake and walking distance to everything. I would recommend to anyone who wants a small boutique hotel in Queenstown."

"My daughter and I had a whirlwind two-week trip across New Zealand and our stay at Eichardt's Private Hotel was one of the highlights! The lake views from the Heritage suite could not be beat and everyone who worked there was professional and helpful. I"d like to call out Eduarda in the bar who made wonderful lattes for us and gave great tips and advice for our daily adventures. The beds were comfortable, the room had every amenity you could hope for and I love that the mini-bar was included. We'll definitely be back!"

"The hotel was a haven of warmth and comfort on a very cold, wet, and windy day. We loved our suite overlooking the lake and the service was excellent."
