PB hotel design editorial

Positioned directly on the edge of Lake Wakatipu, where the water meets Queenstown's compact town centre, QT Queenstown works with one of the most dramatically framed natural settings in the southern hemisphere — the Remarkables range rising across the lake in a wall of bare schist and snow. The building's angular glazing, visible in the restaurant and bar spaces, drives those mountain and water views into every public room, the faceted window planes cutting the landscape into overlapping frames rather than presenting it as a single panorama. The interiors, developed in the QT Hotels house style with contributions from the brand's longtime design collaborator Nic Graham, translate the Australian group's signature layered eclecticism into a distinctly South Island register. Guestrooms combine pale oak flooring, grey panelled bedheads, and chunky hand-knit wool throws with copper-finished pendant lamps and butterfly chairs draped in sheepskin — a knowing shorthand for New Zealand materiality that avoids the obvious alpine lodge references. Patterned rugs with geometric motifs drawn loosely from Māori tukutuku weaving ground the beds, while the bar sets tan leather barrel chairs with brass nailhead trim against a chevron-patterned ceiling and a backlit bottle wall that tips the atmosphere toward something closer to a well-stocked city cocktail den than a mountain resort. The restaurant's mix of forest-green upholstered tub chairs and bleached timber tables keeps the focus precisely where the architecture demands it — on the lake and the ranges beyond.

QT Queenstown Reviews

"Impressive head on lake view from our Remarkables Lake View King room that steals the show. The hotel is currently being combined with the former Rydges property just below the QT, so there is presently scaffolding visible, construction noise during breakfast (and in general), and the bar was closed. The walk from town to the hotel involves an uphill section that is quite steep but one could presume that once the renovations are complete, access will be from the Esplanade below. Some service lapses such as no hot water for one evening, but the friendly staff was, at the very least, empathetic and helpful. All in all, a quiet hotel with beautiful views that will be a superb Queenstown stay once construction is complete."

"The hotel is very nice but was undergoing some major renovations when we were there - this was often noisy especially in the morning during breakfast. The breakfast was very good and the room we stayed in was very nice. The bottom of the Hotel was closed for the renovation- so we didn’t not get to see the whole complex. The hotel sits on a fairly significant hill so if walking to town be prepared. It’s a significant climb back up the hotel. Ubers into town were plentiful and inexpensive (about 10NZD). They offer laundry and dry cleaning with a short turnover. Rooms were spacious and comfortable. AC was good. Rooms had hairdryers."

"Lovely accommodation with all the extras. Welcome drinks 3-5pm is a nice touch. Renovations underway so bar area unavailable. Rooms are well appointed."

"Nice hotel in good position about 10 mins walk downhill to the town, but currently undergoing a major construction project. Lovely big room with views over Lake Wakatipu. Comfortable bed and separate seating area. Really nice bathroom with large shower & separate bath. They have acquired a property on the lake front right in front of the QT which is currently under renovation/construction. As a result, the pool wasn’t available which was disappointing (and we weren’t advised in advance). It was also not possible to walk down the stairs to the lakeside. We had breakfast included which was, for the standard and price of the hotel, disappointing. Buffet style with hot choices available to order, but limited buffet offerings. After the first day we chose to breakfast elsewhere & didn’t eat lunch or dinner in the hotel. There are plenty of restaurants in Queenstown so this wasn’t a problem. Staff were lovely and welcoming."

"We loved our stay here, 3 nights in early February, lake view room, great staff, 5 mins walk from central town and wharf activities, delicious breakfast in spacious dining space, had dinner once as well. The hotel is shortly expanding from 69 rooms to more then 200 over the next few months. I hope they will find a way to preserve the personal and caring atmosphere."
