PB hotel design editorial

Schist stone — the layered grey sedimentary rock quarried from the Otago region and used in everything from local dry-stone walls to Queenstown's oldest buildings — gives the Queenstown Park Boutique Hotel its most legible connection to place. The property sits along Park Street on the lower slopes above Lake Wakatipu, its exterior presenting a composition of stacked schist columns and cantilevered rooflines that angle outward like the faceted peaks of the Remarkables range visible behind the town. That dialogue between built form and landscape is the central organizing idea here: the angled glazed canopies over the entry sequence catch light in a way that references the mountain geometry without literal mimicry. Inside, the approach shifts register across different wings and room categories, producing an interior that mixes rather than unifies. The older rooms carry a more theatrical mood — oversized gilt-framed mirrors, teal velvet armchairs in the French bergère manner, dark patterned carpet in swirling burgundy, and floor-to-ceiling glazing framing the garden — while the newer suites move toward a cleaner palette of warm timber bed platforms, glass-partitioned bathrooms with freestanding soaking tubs, and linear gas fireplaces set flush into white walls. The reception area returns to schist, rough-coursed columns anchoring a space furnished with pattern-clashing upholstery that keeps the atmosphere closer to a well-curated private house than to conventional hotel formality.

"Amazing four night stay in Queenstown Park Boutique Hotel. Location is perfect, 5 minute walk to the downtown and water front. Short walk to amazing hikes. Near everything but not in the middle of the chaos. Managers Julian and Diego went above and beyond every single day! Best breakfast in our 23 day vacation in NZ and Australia!"

"This was probably my best sleep while travelling NZ. I don't know what inside those pillows but my nights were carefree and wonderful. But perhaps it was the staff (shout-out to Lou who was incredible by making me feel like I'm home and not a guest. Actually, the whole reception team did that) who turned a vacation into something so comfortable and convenient. Anything was doable and it was done with a smile. Just brilliant."

"We stayed here for over 10 days. You really get to know a place when you do. I have to say that what makes this hotel are the people. Excellent care from the staff and a call out to Julian's politeness and helpfullness. And Lucrezia and Cam. Nothing was too much trouble when asked. Positive and kind. A pity there were road works going on outside that blocked the view of the mountain but out of their control. Very good cooked breakfast although the standard coffee could be improved. Location excellent. Walking distance 3 minutes to centre but far away enough to have peace and quiet. Rooms clean but a little more care to repair welcome. Great location."

"We stayed at this lovely hotel for 10 nights. All staff were super friendly and so accommodating. The service is very personalised- all staff knew us by name and treated us all so wonderfully. I really love the extra attention they pay to the children, it made them feel so special. Breakfast was exceptional and the chefs were so friendly and accommodating. The nightly canapés and drinks was a great way to unwind and mingle with other guests - sharing experiences and helping each other get the best tips for our stay. Our room was lovely - for 4 guests it was spacious, clean and had everything we needed. The hotel is positioned perfectly between the centre of town and the Gondala/Luge. The staff also provided us with so many handy tips on places to go and things to see. This was our first visit to Queenstown and will definitely not be our last. There is also laundry service available - which was very convenient. Highly recommend the Queenstown Park Hotel!"

"Absolutely incredible experience and exceptional staff. This was my fourth trip to Queenstown and I've stayed in hotels all over the world, but this was my first stay at Queenstown Park Boutique Hotel. It is, without question, one of the most personalised hotel experiences I've ever had. From the moment we arrived, nothing was ever too much trouble. The team consistently went above and beyond - not because they had to, but because they genuinely cared. Whether it was proactively offering to help with activity bookings, taking the time to get to know us personally, or even offering to assist with our washing (something completely beyond their day-to-day role), every interaction felt warm, thoughtful and sincere. A special thank you to Julian and Lu, who are truly beautiful people and made us feel so welcome throughout our stay. Their kindness and genuine interest in guests are what set this hotel apart. Credit also to the hotel manager, Diego, whose attention to detail and commitment to exceptional service is clearly reflected throughout the entire property. The breakfast each morning was outstanding and deserves special recognition. The chef also prepares delicious canapés for the complimentary wine and canapé hour each evening from 6-7 pm, which was one of the unexpected highlights of our stay. It's a wonderful opportunity to meet fellow travellers, exchange stories and enjoy the welcoming atmosphere that the hotel creates. Queenstown Park Boutique Hotel has perfected the balance between luxury and genuine hospitality. It's rare to find a place where every member of the team makes you feel like a valued guest rather than just another booking. We will absolutely be back - although next time we'll time our visit a little better. As an avid skier, we arrived just before the powder did! Thank you to everyone at Queenstown Park Boutique Hotel for making our stay so memorable. We can't wait to return. George and Freyja"
