PB hotel design editorial

Schist stone — the layered grey sedimentary rock quarried from the Otago region and used in everything from local dry-stone walls to Queenstown's oldest buildings — gives the Queenstown Park Boutique Hotel its most legible connection to place. The property sits along Park Street on the lower slopes above Lake Wakatipu, its exterior presenting a composition of stacked schist columns and cantilevered rooflines that angle outward like the faceted peaks of the Remarkables range visible behind the town. That dialogue between built form and landscape is the central organizing idea here: the angled glazed canopies over the entry sequence catch light in a way that references the mountain geometry without literal mimicry. Inside, the approach shifts register across different wings and room categories, producing an interior that mixes rather than unifies. The older rooms carry a more theatrical mood — oversized gilt-framed mirrors, teal velvet armchairs in the French bergère manner, dark patterned carpet in swirling burgundy, and floor-to-ceiling glazing framing the garden — while the newer suites move toward a cleaner palette of warm timber bed platforms, glass-partitioned bathrooms with freestanding soaking tubs, and linear gas fireplaces set flush into white walls. The reception area returns to schist, rough-coursed columns anchoring a space furnished with pattern-clashing upholstery that keeps the atmosphere closer to a well-curated private house than to conventional hotel formality.

"Our stay at Queenstown Park Boutique Hotel was not long enough. Our room was amazing with a gas fire, lounge suite and beautiful view. The bathroom was spectacular and we didn't want to leave. We requested a late checkout so we could spend more time soaking up the atmosphere"

"Fantastic hotel. Ideal location just a short walk from town but slightly removed from the business. Daily breakfast was incredibly high quality food and service. Daily happy hour was unique and allowed us to get to meet other guests and hotel ownership. Staff was incredible - friendly, helpful, and warm. Special shout-outs to Mike, Marv, Marielle, and Julien for making our stay so great."

"We had an incredible six night stay at the Queenstown Park Boutique Hotel on our recent trip to New Zealand. Queenstown was the first stop on our trip, and from the moment we arrived to when we left, the Queenstown Park Boutique Hotel delivered on all fronts. I will just highlight a few key areas that we appreciated. - The service is top notch. Everyone was friendly, helpful, and gave us great suggestions on things to do and restaurants to go to. I would like to give a shoutout to Cam, Diego, Julian, and the kitchen team. - The location right next to the park is beautiful, and it is just a few minutes walk to the center of town, the waterfront, and the Skyline park. - We stayed in a Remarkables Junior Suite and the room was lovely. It was modern, spacious, and luxurious. The bed was very comfortable, there was a separate toilet area to the main bathroom, and the heated floors and towel rack were a great touch. We also had a fireplace, and large windows with beautiful views. - We had breakfast every morning in the hotel and it was hot, fresh & delicious. The staff was friendly, and it really helped having a great breakfast option early in the morning before we got going on a hike or other tour. The hotel also has canapes and drinks every evening. We only got to partake once, but it was a great time. You could choose from beer or wine, and also a couple of small bites. The team really makes you feel welcome! Overall, it was a truly lovely experience and it set the tone for the rest of our trip to New Zealand. Do not hesitate to stay at the Queenstown Park Boutique hotel, you will be disappointed!"

"This hotel lives up to the boutique in its name and was very special. As soon as we arrived, we were greeted outside and warmly welcomed in. All the staff were so friendly and helpful during our entire stay. Their breakfast is extensive with so many options and delicious. The afternoon canapes and wine served by the staff was also a great experience. Our hotel room was spacious, beautifully appointed and comfortable. We had a wonderful stay at Queenstown Park Boutique Hotel."
