PB hotel design editorial

On the western shore of Lake Wakatipu, where a private headland pushes out toward the Cecil and Walter Peaks, a cluster of low-slung pavilions and dark-boarded lodges step down through indigenous plantings to the water's edge with the unhurried confidence of a building that has made peace with its surroundings. Rosewood Matakauri, which takes its name from the native matakauri shrub said to have healing properties in Māori tradition, was designed by New Zealand architect John Blair with interiors conceived to mirror the tawny, mineral landscape just beyond the glass — terracotta leather bed bases, ochre cushioning, woven rattan chairs, and framed botanical prints of native ferns that read as field notes rather than decoration. The 35 suites and lodge rooms keep their ceilings low and pale-boarded, the pitched rooflines recalling the agricultural vernacular of Central Otago rather than reaching for resort grandeur. Sliding glass walls dissolve the boundary between bedroom and private deck, where the Remarkables range fills the horizon at a scale that makes interior gestures feel deliberately modest — rightly so. The outdoor pool, edged with clumps of tussock grass, mirrors the lake beyond in a composition of extraordinary calm. A Corten steel chimney stack punctuates the main lodge's roofline against that mountain backdrop, the weathered oxidised surface picking up the russet tones of the surrounding schist and autumn scrub.

"My family and I stayed at the Rosewood for four nights. We were greeted upon arrival by staff and welcomed into what they call their living room. We were offered welcome drinks, snacks and hot towels. The front desk staff checked us in and showed us to our room. We booked the lake view suites which have a small living room and king size bed. The bathroom is spacious with separate toilet room. These rooms have amazing views of the lake. This is not a “new” room, it has more of a feel of a lakeside cabin. Our rate included breakfast and dinner each day, along with a cocktail before dinner. The attention to detail here is second to none. The menu is curated by the chef according to local availability of produce and proteins. We have food allergies in our family and the menu selections were either modified or alternatives were offered. Everything was tasty and fresh. The staff quickly learned our preferences, always addressed us by name and made us feel welcome. It really was like dining at a friend’s home. When I called the front desk for anything, they would quickly answer and send someone for assistance. Everyone who works at this resort is kind and attentive but standouts include: Mala, Joel, Conrad, Sarah, Adelaide and Farica. I got carsick after a tour and Farica made sure to get me tea and checked in on me to see how I was feeling. This truly is a special place. I highly recommend it if you are staying in Queenstown. You will not want to leave."

"Wow just doesn’t do Matakauri justice. This place is amazing. The serenity, the view across Lake Wakatipu leading to Cecil and Walter Peaks and then the Remarkables just to the left is everything you can ask for when staying in Queenstown. It was a privilege to stay at Matakauri. Breakfast was fantastic. Dinner was great too, the best oysters we’ve had anywhere in New Zealand. The staff, each and every one of them was fantastic. From checking us in, to arranging private helicopter tours, to sorting out everything we asked for. They did so with such a caring and friendly attitude, warm but not intrusive, the perfect balance. If an when we come back to Queenstown, there’s only one place we’re coming back to. It will always be Matakauri Lodge. Thank you everyone for a fantastic stay!"

"From the minute we arrived when the hotel manager Davide greeted us at the front to the moment we left when escorted out with lunch by Sara the experience we had was the finest experience we ever had in any hotel. This is a hotel where the staff anticipated your every need, knows you by name and treats you like you are their only priority . We have travelled extensively and have never experienced service of this caliber. From davide to yagik to Sara to Helen.Caroline and Joel every single staff member was gracious warm and at your service. It was clearly their mission to make our day the best stay ever no ask was too much. The hotel itself is beautifully located on the lake the rooms were stunning the food excellent. This is a ten star hotel!!"

(I hope that is spelt correctly) Out of all of the fine dining restaurants we visited on our trip this one was hands down the best! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️"
