PB hotel design editorial

At the corner of Great Victoria Street and College Street, where Belfast's Victorian railway quarter gives way to the contemporary city centre, a dark zinc and glass tower announced itself in 2009 as something the city had rarely attempted: a purpose-built luxury hotel with genuine design ambition. The Fitzwilliam Hotel Belfast, developed by the Fitzwilliam Hotel Group and designed with interiors by the Dublin-based firm McCauley Daye O'Connell, rises ten storeys with a faceted corner element clad in dark metal panels, floor-to-ceiling glazing stacked in a vertical rhythm that glows amber against the Belfast dusk. The ground-floor entry, framed in warm bronze-toned curtain glass, gives the street presence of a building that knows its own weight. Inside, the design moves between two registers across its 130 rooms. Earlier interiors lean into a confident dark glamour — ebonised wall panelling set behind duck-egg tufted headboards, geometric-patterned wool rugs in brown and cream, bench seating upholstered to match — while later interventions in public spaces shift warmer and softer: blush velvet sofas, a double-height lobby with brass Petite Friture-style pendants, bookshelved walls flanking a linear fireplace, the atmosphere closer to a well-appointed private members' club than a corporate hotel. The bar and restaurant, with their dark marble counter, horizontal leather banquettes, and coffered ceiling lighting, draw on a mid-century supper club vocabulary that suits Belfast's own complicated relationship with modernity.

"This hotel is right beside the city centre. All staff were friendly and really helpful. We had a lovely room, very clean and comfortable. The room is well planned and fitted out, we had an excellent nights sleep. Breakfast was first class with a great choice. Already booked another nights stay in May"
