PB hotel design editorial

At the innermost reach of the Norangsfjord, where the valley walls rise almost vertically from the water and snow lingers on the peaks well into summer, a Swiss-chalet-inflected timber manor built in 1891 has kept its original character with a fidelity that feels less like preservation than suspended animation. Hotel Union Øye was a fixture on the grand tour circuit from the moment it opened, drawing Kaiser Wilhelm II, Edvard Grieg, and Karen Blixen through its carved gables and bracketed balconies — and the salon visible in the images, with its lacquered grand piano, herringbone parquet floors, Persian rugs, and large-format landscape painting of the surrounding mountains, would not have looked meaningfully different to any of them. The ornamental woodwork on the facade — the pierced bargeboards, the decorative gable screens — belongs squarely to the Norwegian Dragon Style tradition, a nationalist romanticism that swept Scandinavian timber architecture in the late nineteenth century. The 27 rooms, each named after a notable historical guest, range across two distinct registers: some retain the full weight of the original period — four-poster beds draped in gathered silk, damask-patterned wallpaper, Louis XV bergère chairs — while newer annexe rooms take a quieter approach, with tongue-and-groove pine cladding, painted four-poster frames in putty grey, grain-sack benches, and cast-iron log burners. The glass-roofed conservatory restaurant, furnished with cane-and-gingham Louis XVI dining chairs and a checkerboard pale timber floor, introduces a lighter, more contemporary note without disrupting the property's commitment to deep historical atmosphere.

Hotel Union Oye Reviews

"Simply put, Union Øye is the finest hotel myself and my fiancé have ever stayed at. The mountains, fjords, and broader landscape surrounding the hotel is singular in its majesty and beauty, and provides unequalled opportunities for exploration and adventure. For us, this included kayaking along Norangsfjorden and Hjørundfjorden, cold plunging in the fjord followed by a session in the glass-walled sauna on the dock overlooking the fjord, running / hiking in the mountains, and more. The hotel building was authentically historic and stunningly beautiful, with its historicity wonderfully captured in the decor, paintings and pictures, individually designed rooms, and the 10pm storytelling each night by a member of the staff telling the story of the hotel since its founding in 1891. The food was exquisite and over the course of four days we truly looked forward to each meal. In the interim between meals, we would talk often about how good the last one was. Above all else, the staff are utterly exceptional. We have never experienced better. Each member of staff was unbelievably warm, kind, friendly and helpful. It truly felt like you were being welcomed as a guest into a family's home, rather than just a hotel. The level of effort each and every member of the staff put in to proactively making our stay as exceptional and as special an experience as possible was truly something to behold. It was a real joy to spend time around each of them. Many of the staff are from or have lived for a long time in the surrounding area, many have been with the hotel a long time, many participated in the physical renovation of the hotel in 2021, and this intimate connection the staff has with the surrounding area and the hotel really shines through. Myself and my fiance became engaged on this trip, and we do not think there was a better place in the world we could have done it. We plan to return many times in the future. I gave Union Øye the most deserved 5 stars across each available category in my review. The sole reason for this is there is no option to select 6 stars."

"Staff, rooms, food and wine were all spectacular. Be sure to engage with Lars (sommelier) as you order wine. He’s knowledgeable and wildly entertaining. Culinary experience was of unbelievable high quality and variety. We purchased sweaters at the front desk and they had missing sizes brought to us next morning via a boat from Äseland!"
