PB hotel design editorial

At the innermost reach of the Norangsfjord, where the valley walls rise almost vertically from the water and snow lingers on the peaks well into summer, a Swiss-chalet-inflected timber manor built in 1891 has kept its original character with a fidelity that feels less like preservation than suspended animation. Hotel Union Øye was a fixture on the grand tour circuit from the moment it opened, drawing Kaiser Wilhelm II, Edvard Grieg, and Karen Blixen through its carved gables and bracketed balconies — and the salon visible in the images, with its lacquered grand piano, herringbone parquet floors, Persian rugs, and large-format landscape painting of the surrounding mountains, would not have looked meaningfully different to any of them. The ornamental woodwork on the facade — the pierced bargeboards, the decorative gable screens — belongs squarely to the Norwegian Dragon Style tradition, a nationalist romanticism that swept Scandinavian timber architecture in the late nineteenth century. The 27 rooms, each named after a notable historical guest, range across two distinct registers: some retain the full weight of the original period — four-poster beds draped in gathered silk, damask-patterned wallpaper, Louis XV bergère chairs — while newer annexe rooms take a quieter approach, with tongue-and-groove pine cladding, painted four-poster frames in putty grey, grain-sack benches, and cast-iron log burners. The glass-roofed conservatory restaurant, furnished with cane-and-gingham Louis XVI dining chairs and a checkerboard pale timber floor, introduces a lighter, more contemporary note without disrupting the property's commitment to deep historical atmosphere.

"We stayed for 3 nights, after having stayed at their sister hotel Storfjord. The comparison between the 2 was quite evident and we would highly recommend Hotel Storfjord and wouldn't suggest staying in Union Oye. Although it's a beautiful hotel with much history, it felt too old fashioned; there are many beautiful communal rooms that just have no atmosphere at all - lines of chairs around the perimeter, and remained empty while we were there. The bar which was busy is awkward, uncomfortable and rarely staffed. The food felt old fashioned too and really not that good. Overall although individuals were lovely, the service was unwelcoming and quite brusque - we were told more than once to move tables as we were only 2 people not 3, even though there were numerous empty tables around us. In general we felt we were in the way of the staff. It feels that this is driven by the management of the hotel rather than individual staff. All this contrasts strongly with Hotel Storfjord which was so welcoming, great food, well planned and many little details to make your stay more comfortable - definitely stay at Storfjord instead!"

"You learn a lot about a service organization when something goes wrong -- how they respond tells you more about their values and culture than anything they write on their website. We had such an experience with the Union Oye. My wife and I had scheduled a trip to Norway to celebrate a major anniversary and booked three nights at the Union Oye. About a week before our trip, my wife's brother experienced a very serious medical crisis. He lives alone and we had to bring him to our home so that we could bring him to doctors every day -- and we had to cancel our trip to Norway. The Union Oye has a cancellation policy that requires canceling at least 30 days before a reservation. Our travel agent asked for an exception -- knowing that it was peak season and the hotel was fully booked -- but was told that this wouldn't be possible. I then wrote a long email explaining the situation in greater detail and offering to get a letter from the doctor. At first, the Union Oye didn't even bother to respond to me. Then, after a follow-up email from me, I received an emotionless email re-stating their cancellation policy and saying "I am unable to waive the cancellation fee." If the Union Oye culture and staff genuinely cared about customers, they certainly could have chosen to refund our money (we had to pay in advance for all three nights). The Union Oye may be a hotel that has welcomed kings and queens since 1891 as their website states, but they lack any sense of caring or empathy. We will definitely reschedule our trip when my wife's brother recovers -- and we definitely won't be booking the Union Oye."

"We spent three weeks in Norway, all of which was wonderful, but Hotel Union Øye was the most special experience. The facilities are beautiful, every detail is considered, but the staff! The staff is magnificent. They deserve everything you give them and so much more! We are so happy we decided to drive one of our weeks through Norway. The Hotel Union Øye is very, very special!"

"This was a lovely place to stay…in one of the most beautiful places we’ve traveled. The staff was really exceptional and the accommodations were lovely. I would say that the service is not up to the quality we expect form Relais and Chateau but I think they are working towards that. They seem to be a bit short staffed to provide truly top tier service. For instance, once dinner service began it was difficult to get service in the bar, so we were unable to relax and enjoy a pre dinner cocktail."
